  1. QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Aug 24, 2010 -> 11:40 PM) I'd doubt they had losses. The Rangers one has analysis in it. They have a 68m broadcast deal, the White Sox own 1/4 of Comcast, I wonder what the Sox get from that. The Rangers one is interesting to look at because it shows how much they make from littler things like jumbotron announcements and mascot appearances. However, overall the amortization of player contracts, explained near the bottom of the Rangers financial docs, is extremely clever!
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 24, 2010 -> 12:48 PM) How much did they lose during the previous couple years after that series run though? which one? the last one or the 90s one... two different sets of ownership I believe for those two runs... anyway, how much could they have lost after the 03 one? They traded away their players right away.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 24, 2010 -> 08:04 PM) Simple question: Am I the only one that thinks spending 4 million on Manny would be an absolute waste of money? Not to me, they're 3 1/2 out with 3 games left against the 1st place team. Manny could make a huge difference with this line-up just by being OK. Next year is next year, and with the deadspin documents they got leaked about other teams finances I think an argument can be made that looking at payroll and what the Sox bring in as cut and dry as a lot of people on this site want to look at it is not the best gauge. Baseball teams are extremely creative with their finances.
  4. well Sale and Santos are going to have to come up huge, and maybe one of Pena and Linebrink can be serviceable
  5. QUOTE (Cali @ Aug 24, 2010 -> 05:05 PM) I gotta hope having this leak early before LA actually puts him on waivers that some other teams will attempt to block the Sox as Balta points out the White Sox are the worst record team still with something of a shot for the playoffs, it would be pure spite for an AL team to do it and 4m of spite is too much IMO. Certainly NL'ers could grab him, and depending on what the scuttle is from his camp I could see it. However, if the reports early this month of him only wanting to play for the White Sox (from WSCR) are true, than I can see the potential NL teams backing off because the LAD would automatically walk away the second a team claims him, so you're either out 4m when Manny's calf "flares up" again or he reports and is an absolute train wreck and blows a clubhouse up. Also, a NL team would have to play him in the field to use him. I could see it going either way, I don't rule out him agreeing and actually cooperating with an NL team, but I could also see him having such a bad rep that he easily falls to the Sox. It's one of those things that's really hard to speculate when some of the behind the scenes conversations aren't known. If I had to chose, I would say he falls to the White Sox.
  6. http://joeposnanski.si.com/2010/08/24/all-...liar/?eref=sihp good article from SI about how pitchers getting hurt seems to be the rule rather than the exception. Nothing really new or groundbreaking, but a lot of names and some stats in one place.
  7. Saw this in the A.M. and was interested in it. Even though they do not have the White Sox posted yet, and maybe if they do my theory will be shot out of the water with the White Sox, but using the ones they have posted as some support for a belief I've had for awhile, it's not a surprise when JR finds money to sign players. Going by attendance, public statements by team officials, and some other info that is out there is not the most definitive way to determine any teams financial situation, those can be used as a good base analysis, however there are many creative ways a team can save/make money that are basically impossible to realize unless docs like these are leaked.
  8. QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 01:54 AM) You know what, that might be it. What did you do when you were having troubles with it? Yeah, see if that is the problem, I use to have troubles with different parts of that site, and a Flash update helped
  9. QUOTE (Sonik22 @ Aug 7, 2010 -> 01:54 AM) Yeah I've been killing my body in the weight room this summer, taking this next week off on vacation, then come back for maxes before i'm off to school. I haven't had a break for about 3 months now. I hate breaks, but it's a must for the recovery and building process. I'm not a fan of extended breaks either because, like a lot of people, I become mentally addicted to it and feel oogie without working out, but it really made a world of difference. When I went back everything felt better and I was stronger and more explosive... also I get that sore feeling for a few days which is always a weird reward to show your body is reacting!
  10. WEC was entertaining, the Jorgensen fight is a lock FOTY candidate and the main may be one too.
  11. WEC on tonight, vast majority of the time there cards are very entertaining.
  12. 5 similar batters are in the HOF and 6 similar batters through age 37 are in the HOF, with very little to no tangible connections to PEDs, I imagine he gets in pretty easily. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jonesch06.shtml
  13. QUOTE (GREEDY @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 05:25 PM) Beckham might have been an over-exaggeration but how can someone say they would still make the deal today???? 50 million for at the most two years of Peavy post surgery???? And I am not certain that someone would give that 50mil for Gordon.... Did the Sox have to pick up the 2013 option when they traded for him? Because after this year it's 16 and 17 with a 3rd year or a 4m buyout. Not that 37m is a whole lot better, but better than 50+
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 09:07 AM) You have to think the price starts in the Sabathia/Santana range. hmmm, I would pass if I was a team and he's asking for that at this point.
  15. That ball is going to be JUMPING tonight, hopefully Floyd ignores that like Danks did last night!
  16. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 09:59 AM) Definitely. The attendance numbers count all those tickets scooped up by the brokers and the Cubs so they can be deceiving. I was in the bleachers for the drubbing by the Brewers last Monday and you could have shown up at first pitch and gotten a few seats together in left field. That was unheard of for an August night game anytime in the past several years. Also, the Cubs expanded capacity because they need the revenue, so when it dips it kills them, especially with the fact the team is worth about 11% less than when Ricketts bought it according to Forbes and he has to pay 30m a year on his loans for the team.
  17. QUOTE (The Baconator @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 10:53 AM) Daniel Hudson is 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA with AZ. and Edwin Jackson has allowed 1 ER in 13 IPs, and one of the unearned the Sox basically gave the Os 5 outs in the inning, during a pennant race while Hudson didn't do very well in his short opportunity.
  18. What kind of package do you think KC could get for him this offseason with no extension or with a window for a team to extend? Obviously his 09 was crazy good, something like a 205 ERA+. He has started 145 + innings 5 times. First time was exactly 145 innings when he was 20, and if memory serves me right they were actively monitoring his innings. He followed that up with a terrible '05 and I believe that's when he went on his leave to deal with anxiety. He has had strong years in 07 and 08, although only 122 IPs in 07, but nothing crazy and this year he has been OK, but not as good as 08 and certainly not close to 09. It will be interesting to see how teams handle him, obviously with him being only 26 there is a world of potential and one outstanding year on the books.
  19. QUOTE (T R U @ Aug 8, 2010 -> 01:12 PM) If you say so, but I disagree OK, our opinions are obviously different, but when the guy who tapped doesn't dispute it I'm not really sure what you're basing it on. It's a Gracie/Brazilian/Ghost tap, Gracie's have been known to use it/teach it, especially in grappling matches. There's a web video floating around today with some of the Gracie's explaining it. Basically it's a shot in the dark when you're screwed. Matt Lindland, Chael's main trainer, has attempted it in MMA matches before. When going against it you're suppose to break automatically because it helps speed up the refs decision that the guy tapped, Anderson let it go pretty quickly, although not right away, but he did make a point to talk to the ref immediately, he's obviously familiar with it. Meltzer said the internet search engines blew up after the event with 117 related searches, even more so than when they have had mega buy rates, will be interesting to see if they give Belfort a shot or automatic rematch.
  20. QUOTE (G&T @ Aug 8, 2010 -> 08:53 AM) Vizquel stated publicly that they need another bat. I'm not buying any of this chemistry crap. And Manny is not going to pout if they are winning. He's an idiot but he's not cancerous to winning teams. If he's losing then all bets are off. Also the Sox are a perfect fit because he is the biggest star. Say what you want about him but he wants to be at the plate with the game on the line. KW agrees they need another bat too and has been trying to land one, I don't think any offensive performance of late has swayed him from that
  21. QUOTE (T R U @ Aug 8, 2010 -> 03:07 AM) Fitch/Alves was quite the snoozer but MAN Sonnen blew it.. He was destroying Silva the entire fight, it was the biggest let down ever at the bar I was at when he half submitted.. which I still didn't think was that legit anyways but oh well.. What do you mean? He tapped. He doesn't deny it and nobody in mainstream MMA media disputes this idea, Team Quest, as Meltzer points out, has done that same thing before. Chael clearly tapped. QUOTE (zenryan @ Aug 8, 2010 -> 01:45 AM) I wouldnt say Sonnen got lazy at the end, he just got caught. That is what happens to him. Lazy might not be the right word, but he definitely used terrible technique when it happened, he postured up and left an arm in, I mean terrible decision by him, you can't do that with a blue or purple belt much less a black belt.
  22. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 7, 2010 -> 11:53 AM) If the Red Sox make the playoffs, I'll vomit. Every other team, especially Tampa and New York, should be embarassed if they let a team full of scrubs into the playoffs. Crazy as it may sound, if Bos makes it, I would guess the NYY don't. Now I think Tampa and NYY will make it, but Red Sox/NYY have a lot of games left, i believe, and outside Mariano their pen isn't spectacular. Again, I fully expect NYY and Tampa to make it.
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 7, 2010 -> 12:36 PM) Anyone else having internet issues with At&t in the south suburbs? I had very sporadic internet usage during the game last night, which made Laporta's home run even more gratifying. Laporta's was awesome for me because I was following on MLBN and they weren't showing it live, but when the scores recycled on ESPN they show the game that started first as the first score, right when I knew it was in the bottom of the inning and Twins/Indians wasn't first I knew the Tribe won!
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 7, 2010 -> 11:08 AM) There are a couple of good examples from yesterday... I can't remember the posters name off the top of my head, but he has a pic of Alex Brown sitting down as his avatar, he is easily the one I've noticed the most who seems to float in during negative times
  25. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 7, 2010 -> 10:07 AM) When you took 3 of 4 from the Tigers, you better take 3 of 4 from a 36 win Orioles team. baseball doesn't work that way to me, you take a chunk of games, such as a road trip, and decide what a good record is over that stretch, sometimes you'll beat teams and pitchers that you're shocked by and other times sucks will dominate you, as long as you do ok over a stretch, ie like this trip, 5-3 in 7 days is OK with me
