  1. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ May 25, 2010 -> 07:45 PM) After hearing all the stories about NBA players grossly mishandling their money, how do you not take care of this kinda stuff if you're a currently in the league? Mind-boggling. If you poke around the 'net there's stats/articles about how horribly many pro athletes misspend their money, it was some high percentage of NFL and NBA players declare bankruptcy after they leave the league... I can see how it happens, let's say a decent player knocks around the league for a handful of years and makes around 20m over his career, sounds sweet, but take taxes, agents, attys, etc... out of it and it's fair to say it's around 10m, then what type of lifestyle did they lead when playing? Did they act/spend like they were going to make 2-3m dollars for 20-30 years and not save very much and buy big houses and lots of cars? All of a sudden they're sitting on property taxes and either car payments or cars they paid for in cash that depreciated the second they drove it off the lot. Then there's also the family/friends many support. Also bad investments happen a lot. QUOTE (DBAHO @ May 25, 2010 -> 10:37 PM) IF PHX's bench keep outperforming the Lakers bench like they did tonight, that series is going to go right down to the wire. I predict home teams will win out and, obviously, that means the LAA will prevail.
  2. QUOTE (chw42 @ May 24, 2010 -> 02:52 PM) I find it surprising that they have a $55 million payroll... good point. Considering the other payrolls, they are a good team for $55m. Thinking about it it makes some sense, they have some quality players, but they're all kind of young and Vlad didn't cost a ton in the off-season.
  3. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 24, 2010 -> 12:15 PM) Is A-Rod still on the TEX contract? If so, it, like every other contractual obligation of the Rangers, will now be subject to the filings and hearings associated with the bankruptcy. So it could go either way. the whole A-Rod contract thing was weird, I thought when he opted out it basically ended that Rangers contract, maybe it's some deferred money they owe him or it survived in some capacity.
  4. Great game to win, I am so happy Anti is playing out of his mind... Hossa's play is why you can't look at a stat sheet and rip on a guy, he might not be getting a ton of results but he is playing so well, putting a ton of pressure on the Sharks.
  5. Can't find a thread about it, mentioned in "worst MLB" franchise thread, but Oswalt demanded a trade. First team I thought of was the Nats. If you're their GM you have to kick the tires on it, if you can add Strausburg (sp?) and Oswalt within a 2 week time frame that is something. They would compete for a WC. It could be a franchise defining move.
  6. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 20, 2010 -> 03:16 PM) Gameday thought Soto substituted into the 8 spot, when he was actually in the 9 spot, so I think it was all confused by the pinch hitter coming in with Soto on deck. Caught the end of the game, yeah, basically the Cubs made a switch and it was announced incorrectly in the press box so it must have mucked everything up.
  7. well if any of these type of meetings magically have Q and Beck hit like at least MLB average players and the starters ERA drop some it will work.
  8. QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 19, 2010 -> 09:51 AM) Primarily good to hear, would obviously be great if he could work out at 3b, but also having a cost effective alternative at 1b isn't a terrible thing either, and it sounds like that is where he's more suited
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 19, 2010 -> 08:12 AM) I wouldn't be so quick to knock the Nets chances. They won't be getting John Wall, but Devin Harris is no slouch and playing with LeBron could only help him. Lopez is a baller too. You can never disregard the whole Brooklyn/Jay-Z connection with him either, seems to be a big deal to him. I'm definitely not counting them out, but I think tonight kind of sealed that another FA would have to be in place to make it attractive to Lebron. One of the pundits was pointing out that Lebron may relish in the "recruiting" aspect of all this since his ego didn't get that from college, I know he got untold millions, but the recruiting process is a different animal. That's where the Nets may have a big edge with now having one of not the richest owners in the league... again, with all that said, I still think he stays in Cle.
  10. The series is far from over but the Blackhawks obviously couldn't ask for a better start. Anti flat out winning game one for them was so huge. He really has stepped up and I am enjoying the crow he is feeding me, hopefully he has two more series worth!
  11. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ May 19, 2010 -> 09:30 AM) Nice to see Viciedo without an error in his 6 or 7 games at 3B this year. Knock on wood :-). has he been playing at 1b at all?
  12. QUOTE (danman31 @ May 19, 2010 -> 12:38 AM) It was hard to defend Viciedo over those two last year. I was starting to doubt early this year. Look at him now. He's killing the ball. I thought considering his age and the raw talent that he had coming in, I don't know if I would call it a "bidding war" but it's not like the White Sox were the only team pursuing him, it wasn't that hard to defend him... he always had his age and adjusting to a new country (and apparently dietary options!) going for him.
  13. QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ May 19, 2010 -> 08:36 AM) I don't see the value in spending $ 100 mil. a year in payroll to continually battle Cleveland and KC to stay out of the AL Central cellar. And, I disagree, there will plent of good prospects to be had for this group of players. But, that's why they need to dump them all. They need a lot of prospects and because the organization has been rn so poorly for so many years they have very few good prospects currently. Which, again, is my point. They need to gut everything and start over the right way. I don't want to watch this crap anymore. I'd rather watch a bunch of excited young kids win 60 games a year for the next few years while we pile up high draft picks, prospects, and develop them the right way. 2 out of the last 5 full seasons the White Sox won the division and in one of those won a WS... now I'm not trying to live off of the WS or give KW and Ozzie a pass, but that is a sky is falling way of wording things. I don't think these vets that would be rent a players would net a ton of high end prospects and why would you trust the same organization that in your own opinion has had trouble developing talent to magically develop a whole crop of talent. Also, even with the best orgs in developing talent is still an inexact science. Having the ability to have a 100m payroll is something that can be used as a great an effective tool in MLB, not something that should be shunned to watch a AAAA team. Again, I'm not giving the org a pass on this year, somethings have went majorly wrong, but again some of the major problems this team has had have been in areas that fans would have rioted if changed, that being their #2 and #3 hitters starting the season and the SPs.
  14. I'm in the camp that NJ's chances took a hit tonight by getting the 3rd pick and not the 1st
  15. I definitely give Ozzie his share of credit for '05, I think winning the WS is an extremely difficult thing to do and every part has to be firing on all cylinders, even with their super team and super payroll last year I think the NYY might have lost if they didn't get all the extra days off and were able to shorten their rotation. with that said, because he won in '05 doesn't mean he continues to get the benefit of the doubt for the rest of his career. Rosters change as do managers styles and personalities. It should be evaluated on basically a year-to-year basis IMO. Also, even though this team has flat out fell on their face this year I'm not sure what good blowing it up would do. Peavy has looked solid, Rios is playing well and outside of last year has a track record, Beckham and Q still have promise and to top it off I don't think the Sox would get a ton for the veterans as rent a players.
  16. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ May 18, 2010 -> 01:42 PM) I'm not saying that he isn't good. But he was overhyped a bit. From hearing the sound clip of "Welcome to the Machida era" to people saying he's gonna hold onto the title for a long time. People were in awe over the fact that he used a karate base IMO. the 205 weight class in the UFC is insanely deep, I think guys are going to have a hard time defending the belt twice.
  17. I believe he had some guys questioning him playing through some soreness last year, looks like he'll be the next generation Manny Ramirez, Fish won't trade him, he's a cornerstone for that new ballpark
  18. QUOTE (b-Rye @ May 17, 2010 -> 04:22 PM) Pods/Ely/Link/Cash > Pierre Getz/Cash > Teahen Anything (Thome, Getz, Nix) > Omar Vizquel/Kotsay Considering these three incomplete moves, considering they wanted Pods back, but he wanted multi-years to come back to the Sox, and I still don't blame them for giving him that, but even with these three moves, none of these are franchise crippling and if Beckham and Q have just average numbers for their positions, much less the above average potential they have, this team is, just a rough guess, at least 4-6 wins better, and that's not to mention the starting staff has struggled more than many thought. If KW would have traded Beckham or blocked Q from a full time role this message board would have melted down
  19. SPOILERS: Entertaining enough card. Gracie needs to fight more, I think he has a lot of talent, but needs to be more active. Jacare seemed to spin his wheels tonight, Smoking Joe is a tough vet, but I think Jacare needs to show a little more, his ground work was a little sloppy and he was gassing, but still has a ton of upside. AA is probably done, real boring hug-fest match. Overeem looked good, hopefully we get Fedor/Overeem in the fall.
  20. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 14, 2010 -> 02:56 PM) If he wanted three years from Sox, that's too many. But two years of Pierre is way too many as well. depending on what the Sox are paying for it vs. what Pods wanted, the Dodgers ate some of that contract.
  21. QUOTE (zenryan @ May 13, 2010 -> 08:40 PM) Yeah, I'm pretty excited about the Strikeforce card this weekend. Should be some entertaining fights. yeah, looking forward to it, but to me, Bellator has easily taken over as my 2nd favorite promotion, if Strikeforce wants to beef their roster up they should see what those contracts look like and see if they can snag some of those guys before the UFC out bids them. Bellator has a great way to build up young fighters. To me the glaring weakness of Strikeforce right now is depth, they completely lack it and it cripples their matchmaking
  22. Strikeforce card Saturday with Overeem and Rogers for the belt as the main. Arlovski vs. Bigfoot and Jacare vs. Villasenor also on the card. I know a lot of people are just penciling in Overeem, but he's fought a lot of K-1 and his HW MMA opponents the last few years haven't been all that outstanding... http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Alistair-Overeem-461 Easily his most impressive win IMO is against Hunt Has a potential to be a very entertaining card, but I still have trouble with the Overeem/Rogers for the title. I don't care if the loss he is coming off to is Fedor, Rogers shouldn't be fighting for the title. How goofy will it be if Rogers wins and they have Fedor/Rogers II with Rogers as the champ? It will make them look minor league. IMO it should be Bigfoot/Overeem for the belt with Rogers/AA II. Not that AA had an impressive performance against Rogers last time, but that makes some sense to me.
  23. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ May 12, 2010 -> 10:39 AM) I thought I was watching a different game. It doesn't appear there will be any cheap homeruns or strange bounces in that park. That's a nice park. I hated watching games on TV when they were at the baggy dome. maybe not cheap HRs, but Hawk mentioned it and I noticed it watching highlights/updates on MLBN that when the weather was warmer in a series or two in the beginning of the year, the ball travels a lot better, Beckham's FO to RF would probably have been gone
  24. While I don't think he's leaving Cle, I do agree with Broussard that Chicago should be a top choice for him if he does. With the players they would have in place he would have the best chance to immediately compete, probably a strong argument for the LACs as well and Mia if Wade stays (although I don't think LeBron will go to a place with another top-tier superstar). If Lebron is on the Bulls they steamroll Cle this year IMO. Again, I don't think Wade or Lebron are going anywhere, I see Bosh, Johnson and Boozer moving though. Also, to me if the Bulls are put in the dream situation where they have their pick of Lebron or Wade it's Lebron everyday and twice on Sunday, he's the best player in the NBA
  25. Hank Haney has left as Tiger's swing coach
