8/4 - Rays at White Sox

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 06:13 PM) Considering the season Sale has had, not quite sure there is any argument to keep Flowers around There never was any. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 01:32 PM) Personally though my favorite plan is still "40 pushups every time you hit the ball to the right side". It really can't hurt. Actually it probably can hurt. One reason Avi can't turn on the ball is because he has a huge upper body and is terrible at short arm hitting ( pulling your hands in, bending your arms to get the barrel on the ball to drive it while still keeping it fair.) That's why I suggested he open his stance because the way it is now he's too big too pull it. He's what the old time baseball coaches feared about weight lifting , getting too muscle bound . He need to lose upper body weight and become more flexible . Adding the pushups would only prevent him from pulling the ball even more.

Nick Hostetler Promoted to Director of Amateur Scouting

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 08:46 AM) Hey look, it is retroactive complaining day! Everyone get out your "look into the past" goggles and find a move that worked out for another team and blast the sox for not making the same move! Yay! Ha that would be easy even this year you can point to all the moves the Sox made that haven't worked or look at DH alone. I don't even have to do any research to come up with cheaper better DH's than LaRoche, .... Kendry Morales and Chris Colabello -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 02:09 AM) There's only one problem with this...start drafting high schoolers in the first round and Sale/Abreu/Quintana/Eaton will all be long gone before they make it to the big leagues. Rare is the hs player like an A-Rod or Harper who doesn't need at least 2-3 years in the minors, if not 4-5. Or 6 like Trayce Thompson. This from a recent article from SSS: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________ This may or may not surprise you, but Thompson is the first position player to make it from White Sox draft pick out of high school to the White Sox 25-man roster since ... Ryan Sweeney, who, like Thompson, was a second-round pick (in 2003). If you're wondering about the last high school draft pick to stick with the Sox, it's Joe Crede (fifth round, 1996). Over the last decade, you don't even need one complete hand to count the number of high-school success stories -- even if you count players who eventually made it to the big leagues for other teams, which I think is fair since value is value. The only other position player to reach the majors was Chris Carter (15th round, 2005), who was sent to Arizona for Carlos Quentin before the 2008 season. The pitching side has a few more success stories: Dan Cortes (seventh round, 2005). Traded to Kansas City for Mike MacDougal. Hector Santiago (30th round, 2006). Actually pitched for the Sox. David Holmberg (second round, 2009). Traded to Arizona for Edwin Jackson. That's it, partially because the Sox avoided prep players on somewhat of an alternate-year cycle, and the years besides 2009 haven't panned out. Nevin Griffith led the charge in 2007, and 2012 rests entirely on Courtney Hawkins and Jordan Guerrero after the other prep players have stagnated in the lower levels, if they even made it out of rookie ball. The good news? The 2013 and 2014 drafts generated the Sox' most interesting prep prospects in years. The former brought Tyler Danish, Thaddius Lowry and Trey Michalczewski, while the 2014 draft yielded Spencer Adams. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________- So it seems that the Sox recent success with Trey ,Danish, Lowry and Adams from HS led to his promotion even though none has officially panned out . -
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 06:59 AM) Last night was tough. I was so impressed by Carlos and Abreu fighting back like that. I've been in the wait-and-see mode with Avi, not wanting to fully give up on that talent. But this team's offense has turned on without him, and it's defense has turned on without him. We have to scrape for everyhting, and you just can't have that big of a liability in RF. I say platoon of Schuck/Trayce. Let's see how good we can do with a defensive heavy lineup. This is right. Send Avi down. He has no bench value either if he can't defend or hit.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 08:09 PM) Who the hell would call a curveball to mahtook? That was a brutal call. After I saw him swing about an hour late on the FB I couldn't believe it either. -

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 08:14 PM) He is blocking the plate I'm pretty sure you're allowed to block the plate when the ball beats the runner like that. What's the catcher supposed to do ,get out of his way to tag him and allow the runner to try some slick slide maneuver ? -

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 08:21 PM) If the power struggle is true, Hahn must be laughing his ass off to KW, who wanted to buy. How could he if the response to that would be "the players I wanted would've won us the game" -

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 08:13 PM) That's the dumbest send I have ever seen If I still yelled at the TV I'd be yelling at that one. What the hell is wrong with 1st and 3rd and no outs ? Maybe it was lets try to get LaRoche an RBI night. -
3B Danny Valencia claimed by the A's

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Aug 3, 2015 -> 09:38 AM) Well, to be accurate, LaRoche is a $12M player this year, and $13M next year, so not $15M. And that is exactly what they did when they signed him. LaRoche's splits have always been such that she shouldn't play against LHP. It really isn't that difficult. Due to the way the team was constructed, there weren't really any better options on the roster this season. However, like I said, that may be changing if Thompson is called up and/or Valencia is acquired. The Sox are paying LaRoche the same amount whether he plays everyday or not. Giving the team a better chance of competing by letting him ride pine against LHP is better for the organization than just running him out there. I am confident (hopeful is probably the better word) that they'll make the right decision if they have a truly better option on the roster. Thompson in RF and Avi at DH would be one of those. Valencia in RF (may not be any better than Avi in the OF, so they're interchangeable in this scenario) and Avi at DH is another. They haven''t made the decision to sit LaRoche against lefties and they knew the splits when they acquired him. 5 months of playing him against lefties. What makes you hopeful they will do it now ? -

QUOTE (LDF @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 05:19 AM) you know, i never thought of that idea. very interesting point of view. the other point of what you are saying of the russian line, it take a intuitive set of dman. now that i am coming down from my excitement. i am analyzing the whole thing, the hawks lost 2 forwards who scored over 20 goals per. a rhetorical question is how will they replace that production. The Russians the Red Wings had were really good especially Federov . The Hawks Russians have a lot to prove and quickly. -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 02:33 PM) I don't understand. He gives them so much more than Albers, Webb or Jennings. Yes you do understand c'mon now , you know baseball ,he just pitched , he's useless for probably 3 or 4 days. Just call him Yo Yo Carroll up and down up and down.

Sox have tried to sign Samardzija to a long term deal
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Sockin's topic in Pale Hose Talk
He's worth about a Melky contract. He'll get double or more because innings eater, no injuries so far, and above average pitcher but nothing special . But all those things are worth a lot for those willing to pay or with deeper pockets. Sox are neither. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 01:26 PM) A couple days ago someone suggested having him open up his stance. Sounds like a great idea to me. I still advocate 40 pushups every time he hits a ball to the right side. Worked for Willy Mays Hayes. Probably was me. I made a few suggestions.

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 08:06 AM) Lineup https://twitter.com/jcohenap/status/627857508149891076 Trayce Thompson doesn't appear to be getting called up today. Klay may have confused getting on a plane and possibly being called up, to actually being called up. Let Us Rock ! Hey where is the smiley rock band emoticon ? Did it recently get eliminated ? I've been using it for the last week and now its gone along with several others.

I loved the South Side Hitmen of 1977 .The crowds that year were into calling the players out for curtain calls. They wouldn't stop until the player came out.

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 02:50 PM) Yeah, you're right, he's not too bad. 12 more starts at 6 per, would be 72 + 90 now= 162 innings isn't bad. But if the Sox make it past the 1 game playoff of the 2nd WC no Rodon . How do they treat Rodon if the Sox pull even to get into the playoffs or are within a game and 1 team above them with 2 weeks or less in the season ? Eric Johnson's workload has to be watched too as does Sale's . It becomes more apparent why the Sox kept Samrdzija . They really need him should they make it to a 5 or 7 game playoff series.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 2, 2015 -> 06:31 AM) He works the fence well because he has nothing to lose if he doesn't get it. He also is confident throwing, but just about everything else he is very tentative, to the point someone actually accused him of jaking it. That is a lack of confidence. Just last night, Danks last batter was a pop up that dropped down the RF line. I would say at least 3/4 of major league RF make that play, and most of those rather routinely. He has kicked balls, have them go by him etc. just like offensively, he has tools to make himself great, but somethimg is holding him back. When they got him, the Sox thought he was could play CF. On the particular play you mention still can't see how you come to that conclusion that 3/4 of RF get that ball. 1st of all you have to know where he was starting from. If he was shaded towards center field that's a very long way to go to catch that ball. TV doesn't show you that . Mostly all we saw was Sanchez running out then veering off when Avi came into the picture. And I've seen our OF and opposing team OF trying to get above the fence to rob HR's and most don't because of the padding lip they always hit their shoulder on which screws up their jump. Avi avoided doing that last night. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 08:28 PM) If the Padres are kicking back that much money, there's no way they are also going to be willing to take on Danks' contract as well. As you said, big ballpark favors almost anyone's pitching, not just Danks...so there are 50 other starters they could acquire for cheaper. All depends on how desperate they are to get rid of Kemp going into next season, and if they're totally going to start from scratch again by dealing Shields, Cashner and Ross, as well as Will Myers. Just as likely, they'd want us to take BJ Upton or someone like that if we were to send them Danks. HAHA I think I made the same proposal for Ryan Braun who can actually field his position and is signed for another 5 yrs at $105M only in my world the Brewers take LaRoche and Avi . Totally unrealistic I know but teams get desperate to shed those huge contracts.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 06:41 AM) It was a missed pitch and it did lead to the scoring 5 runs, whether thwt would have made a difference last night, that is up for debate. They still got him in other parts of the game. That one pitch though is interesting. If Flowers catches, known as the better framer, does he get that pitch, and does it potentially save 5 runs? Or since Rodon was wild and known to be wild does the ump show bias just like he does on pitchers with a rep for good control ? If a ball is over the plate the catcher cannot catch it anywhere but where it is pitched . It is up to the ump to call it a strike . Do you know on that pitch where the catcher set up ? Did Rodon hit his spot where the catcher set up or somewhere else ? Many strikes don't get called if say a catcher sets up inside and the strike is thrown over the outside corner because a catcher has to move his glove so much and there is no way possible to frame it. Point is when Rodon establishes better control he will get more calls. Until then he won't and blaming Soto is highly questionable.

CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Big moment in the game came in the 3rd with 2 on , no outs Sox ahead 2-0 and Gregorius hits one to RF and Avi goes and robs him of a 3 run HR. Ends up a sac fly and that 1 run was all Danks gave up but easily could've been 3 . http://m.whitesox.mlb.com/news/article/140...gorius-of-homer That's the 2nd HR he's robbed this year. Avi works the fence better than any Sox OF I've seen in a while. Being as tall as he is helps . I know what the defensive metrics say about him and I see many posters saying how bad he is in RF but are they actually seeing bad defense or echoing the stats ? I watch most of the games and I just don't see a terrible fielder. Admittedly TV doesn't always pick up the jump/read an OF gets or the route he runs . I don't see him kicking the ball around like we'd see with Viciedo and DeAza and robbing HR's is always a big play and possible momentum point in a game. -
QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 1, 2015 -> 02:52 PM) He really hurt himself by holding out for a MLB deal. After well over a month of no action, he went to AAA and struggled a lot. Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
