Griffey Rumor
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Aug 17, 2005 -> 10:14 AM) First off you don't just put him on the list. You call the GM's first & get agreement from those teams that can claim before the Reds. A refusal to agree would not only spoil trade relations but it could also come back & haunt that non-contender. Say a few years down the road that team reverses roles with either the CWS or the Reds. The Reds or CWS would then be inclined to return the favor. Secondly if a non-contender did decide to play the spoiler (even after giving their word not to) you can always pull the player back. The only risk is that you get a one shot deal involving that player. Wouldn't that border on collusion?

TIME FOR PLAN B?
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 17, 2005 -> 08:33 AM) Look at the FA market this offseason. The Reds want an ace, and the only big name available is Burnett, who surely won't go to Cincy. With their small ballpark, no stud FA pitcher will go to Cincy. Their best opportunity to get a top pitcher is to trade someone. Which isn't going to happen unless the Reds were to pay virtually all of Griffey's contract. The only chance they have to get pitching is to dump Griffey's contract, and then use the money to aquire a pitcher from a team looking to move payroll. If Rogo and Young was the best offer they had, that saids it all. If the Reds have any sense at all, they would realize that freeing up $40 million gives them a way better chance of getting pitching than holding out for a top pitcher.

Editors complain about APs coverage of Iraq
QUOTE(winodj @ Aug 17, 2005 -> 08:31 AM) I'm not saying we shouldn't be reporting whats happening in Niger. But then again, how many good news stories do you hear from there either? The point is about the type of coverage that we are receiving. That's all. That's basically where I am going with this... If "good" news isn't newsworthy, why aren't we reporting REALLY bad news? If it is so important to report body counts, there are literally thousands of people a day starving, why aren't they at least as newsworthy as a couple hundred people in Iraq?

TIME FOR PLAN B?
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 17, 2005 -> 08:26 AM) Yeah, what idiots to actually ask for something in return that could help their team. I never understood why the Reds would have even considered a deal centered around Young and Rogo. That team needs pitching, pitching, and more pitching. Not that freeing up $40 million or so could help them get pitching...

Editors complain about APs coverage of Iraq
QUOTE(winodj @ Aug 17, 2005 -> 07:29 AM) There was a triple suicide bombing in Baghdad today. Killed as many people as in London last month, but I guess that's not as important as "good news" then. Here's the point dude, this stuff happens EVERY day. And if there were 70 bombings a day happening here, you think the Newton, PA little league team getting into the LL World Series would be a news story getting any attention at all? The irony is when Hussein was sending his death squads around to execute people for basically any reason, the media didn't think that was newsworthy, for some reason the deaths of Iraqis are now interesting. Millions of people are on the verge of starvation in Niger, if there is any reports about them, they are buried underneath Madonna falling off of her horse. If it is so important to report "bad" news, why are we not innudated with pictures from Niger every night? There are way more people dying there everyday, why if these kind of reports are so important, are these people forgotten, or at best marginalized?

Adkins
QUOTE(JimH @ Aug 17, 2005 -> 07:17 AM) Mike, in their world, yes. This game was totally on the hitting. If you can't push across a run in 6 extra innings in your own ballpark, forget it, you're gonna lose. No doubt about that. I just don't get someone saying that they would have saved their best relievers in a one run game against your rivals, because of the microscopic chance that a 16 inning game might break out. Seriously, when was the last time the Sox even played 16???

8/16 Games
Damn Bull, you need to get those walks down... On the bright side, we did kick the s*** out of Jason Grilli.

Adkins
QUOTE(wsox08 @ Aug 17, 2005 -> 12:31 AM) again, this is why we had to resort to using Adkins.... because he doesn't use the bullpen correctly.. So you are telling me that with a one run lead late in the game, you save your top relievers for a 16 inning game that probably won't happen? Please.

Swap Adkins for a hitter
QUOTE(VAfan @ Aug 17, 2005 -> 12:18 AM) Do you still feel the same way after tonight? In the 16th inning, Adkins is finally brought in and promptly gives up 5 runs as the crowning touch on our first 4 game losing streak of the season. And you can't say he was unused, because he'd just pitched in Boston and given up runs. Guys if you want to understand what Ozzie is doing in these games, you have to think in the big picture. We are taught in the Sportscenter world of today to think in terms of one game, one inning, one pitch. In reality one season is all that matters. Do we have enough wins to make the post-season, and how has Ozzie readied these guys to win in October? In October, Ozzie isn't going to look back at August 16th and get pissed at Jon Adkins, he is going to remember how guys responded in what specific situation, and if that situation comes up again, he is going to know who to use then, and who not to. I feel more strongly after a game like tonight to be honest. In reality we probably should have gone to Adkins earlier in order to save the pen. And once again to go back to my original point in this thread, which you ignored, we are talking about the 25th man on the roster. No matter who it is, they are going to have a very, very limited role on this team as an insurance policy for either the defensive side, or as the last pitcher out of the pen. With the amount of appearences that the pen has racked up, Ozzie feels that he is best served by having that insurance out of the pen. Granted I don't agree with the person called up, but I do agree with the concept of the extra pitcher, based on how this season has gone. And finally, realize if Jon Adkins isn't on this team, most likely a starting pitcher goes out to the mound at some point last night, and we aren't talking about Jon Adkins, we are scrambling to see who will start what game after throwing off up the starting rotation. So not only could we have lost last night, but either someone would be starting on short rest, or we would be screwing around with the roster to get a pitcher up here for a spot start on short notice. To say a hitter is more valuable to this team after last night, is extremely short-sighted, especially with the long term problems that not having an extra pitcher could have caused. Think bigger than just one loss.

Joe Cowley's column.
Wow, that was incredible. What an awesome write up and a major thank you for showing Ozzie for who he really is. Once again, hate, blood, and death may sell, but this is the stuff that is missing from the news- the human element. Thank You Joe Cowley.
