VAUGHN vs ABREU (May update)
Congrats, Hahn? Although did he really have any other legit choice? Keep Abreu, and trade Vaughn? I mean, it's not like we didn't have 5-6 other players whose best position on the field was arguably 1B/DH... We can play the same game in reverse with Benintendi. Trade for Kimbrel QO for Kimbrel, not for Rodon Trade for Pollock, who never wanted to play away from the West Coast, and who was never going to be suited for RF in any way shape or form (actually better in CF than LF statistically)...coming off a "peak" fWAR year compared to previous seasons and an aging vet in 30's Not get stuck with Pollock, saving money because Pollock was so adamant about leaving the Sox... Which led to overpaying Benintendi, wasting $75 million and being almost an entirely "sunk cost" 5 year albatross contract for a now perpetually rebuilding team, coming off a "peak" fWAR year compared to his previous 3 seasons with Boston and KC. Rinse. Repeat. And we actually spent more money on Benintendi than we were theoretically going to allocate to Jose Abreu in the first place (in your given scenario.)

White Sox one of the five "look away, I'm hideous teams" at the 1/3rd mark of the season...based upon pre-season expectations
https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb-heat-check-who-has-exceeded-expectations-and-who-has-fallen-short-one-third-of-the-way-through-2023-192935737.html Oakland Athletics: Yes, this might be the worst MLB team ever, but it was also designed to be something approximating that, as the A’s ownership group tries to pull off a cynical, cash-greased exit to Las Vegas. The pitching staff is all-time levels of bad, but the lineup has some bright spots — namely, Esteury Ruiz is stealing all the time, and Brent Rooker is bashing enough to bring back something nice at the trade deadline. Cleveland Guardians: Last season’s feel-good, contact-hitting winners are this season’s reminders of why every other organization tries to build around more well-rounded offensive skill sets. Chicago White Sox: At this point, success might mean getting enough resurgent June lines to make the trade deadline useful for the 2024 and 2025 White Sox teams. San Diego Padres: The Padres, in fourth place at 25-29, are thrashing to keep their heads above water as Manny Machado tries to return from injury and break out of a skid. With Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. playing well, it has become perhaps more grimace-inducing to figure out where the solutions will come from for San Diego. The Padres have a lot of talent, but the drop-off on the roster is too steep. St. Louis Cardinals: The tailspin has stabilized a bit since they reinstalled Willson Contreras as a catcher, but the early swerves in St. Louis have taken their season way, way off course. A watered-down division means they could still surge into playoff contention, but this is a team that — based on preseason talent evaluations — should be sailing in first. BAE doesn’t even know about the drama, but it recognizes this last-place team as a brutal disappointment.

Lance Lynn
They might not even have the money in their coffers to pay off the rest of his contract and buyout all at one time, lol. In all seriousness, let's say they did DFA Lynn to "teach him a lesson," and the rest of the team as well. All these players leaving the team are getting massive amounts of money...and freedom to play for any team they want upon leaving Chicago. Surely, he would go to a team like the Cardinals, just like Aaron Hicks of the Yankees has already found a home despite his terrible hitting numbers for going on 3 seasons now. Do we really believe that the likes of Scholtens and a rehabbing Martin (off TJS) are going to be two key pitchers to build around? We have a few guys like Cannon and Mena and Thompson...along with last year's first rounder and Norge Vera, but the system's still basically pretty barren. MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE one of those seven guys actually makes it. Two would be a minor miracle. But, as Balta noted, you're going to turn around and have to trade Cease and Kopech in the next two seasons as well or risk getting nothing back for them, too. They're between a rock and a hard place. Of course, because they have too many simultaneous roster holes, they're inevitably going to end up drafting for MLB roster need in order to "retool" and not ever really consider the best pick for the long-term, 5-10 years out, future of the franchise...meaning more high/higher ceiling prep players.
-
Lance Lynn
Fine, then there's no point keeping them either....because any "retool" is not going to be sufficient to replace three starting pitchers when they have absolutely zero ready to go internally...they're completely unwilling to pay top dollar dollar in FA and their payroll is rumored to be declining quite dramatically with the old "blame the fanbase/low attendance" canard.

5/31/2023 - Angels @ Sox (retroactive gamethread)
Contact Berto again...for another rant.

Lance Lynn
ReyLo is gone after this season, regardless. Point 2, he would take 4-6 weeks to ramp up to starting in the middle of the season. His arm just hasn't been conditioned for that type of activity over the last couple of years. Another team might sign him and reconvert him back to starting, but that would take an entire offseason to prepare for. Point 3, any plan for Reynaldo should be aimed towards maximizing whatever remaining value he possesses as an UFA heading into this upcoming offseason...and building the future rotation of the White Sox around Cease and Kopech, at least for the next 2-3 seasons.
-
Lance Lynn
They will trade him this deadline...or end up holding him for remainder of season since no starting alternatives in minors and quietly pay the buyout.
-
Lance Lynn
Outfielders didn't even bother to turn around....well, also didn't have much time to do so.
-
Lance Lynn
Animal Farm parallels lol? Didn't end too well for that hardest worker.

5/30/2023 - Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim @ Sox, 7:10 CT start
Pathetic have to consider switching to Cubs/Rays or Tigers/Rangers except Trout and Ohtani at bats. More Gavin Sheets defensive artistry. Moniak with a broken bat hit and now one that popped out of Sheets' glove. Shocking that happened.

Lightning fast half inning. Benintendi down to 671.

Grifol's best friend ESPN broadcaster Eduardo Perez would be so much better as manager. Couldn't be much worse.

Lynn 6.44 ERA. Walsh was 2/18 entering series. Stadium has turned into a mausoleum to JR. Not much booing. Just a sense of resignation.

Ed Farmer would curse you, lol. Well it will be fun to see how Iowa's new starting QB McCarthy and second TE do this year.

Ohtani had been on an awful run, .146 streak entering Sox series. 9/20 with now second homer, Ohtani career vs. Lynn Lynn has also surrendered 14 homers already in 2023...same as Shohei season number.

??? Michigan ND recruiting news? Ohtani just hit his 14th. 425 feet. Lynn back up to a 6.17 ERA lol.

Sox have accumulated LOTS of goodwill with the Rodon skipped QO and especially all that international signing money foregone to other teams under Hahn. Also, Cubs up 2-0 over Rays, woke up when the Sox came close to catching them lol.
