  1. QUOTE (LDF @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 11:32 PM) less..... i mean i see just 1 side of his pitching and that is the win / lost record. then i look at the stats and that tells me i am way off on how many innings he pitched. pretty much like a quiet 180 innings... remember 1 thing, i am a fan on Danks. and still am. What does win/loss record have to do with innings pitched?
  2. What is surprising about Danks' total? He threw 193.2 last year and is on pace for 180-190 this year depending on whether he gets 5 or 6 more starts. I'm confused, do you think he should have more or less?
  3. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 02:15 PM) Rosenthal suggests that Samardzija will be in the range of a James Shields contract. 4 years 70-75 million I would pass on Samardzija at that price. I'm perfectly okay going into 2016 with Sale, Quintana, Rodon, Johnson and Danks as our starting five. The only way I would spend big money is if we could find somebody to take Danks off our hands.
  4. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 12:02 PM) These post all star game numbers are what is called in the trade a "salary drive" nothing more. Personally I don't think the Sox are going anywhere next year without massive changes to the front office / manager / coaching staff. That's not going to happen. So...why waste 10 million on a player who is as inconsistent as they come, will be 34, can't hit in cold weather, is a mental midget and loses concentration at the drop of a hat? Alexei showed much promise in 2008 but for the most part, like the entire team, organization has been a disappointment. Mark From 2009 to 2014 Alexei put up fWARs of 2.0, 4.1, 4.1, 2.0, 3.2 and 3.2 which averages out to 3.1. I think it's a huge disrespect to Alexei to say he his career has been a disappointment.
  5. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 01:18 AM) Of course our country is totally engulfed in not wanting to offend anybody and political correctness. I think George Will makes about a dozen good points in this column, listing many many things we could be outraged about if we elected to be outraged. For instance, Washington D.C.'s name should be changed and so should the name of the state of Oklahoma. Several more examples. I think Trump is awesome for battling back against political correctness cause as Will points out, where do we draw the line?? I mean he makes a perfect point that the state of Oklahoma's name should be changed as well as the name Washington, D.C. Tons of good examples. The P.C. people won't read it or will just say George Will sucks. Might want to broaden one's horizons and consider this column. http://www.newsmax.com/GeorgeWill/redskins...9/06/id/673810/ Where should the line be drawn? Who's to say exactly, but Trump has definitely crossed it by saying many of the racist or sexist comments he has said through the years including this campaign. Implying that all illegals are rapists and drug dealers or saying that Jeb Bush likes illegals because he is married to a Mexican-American crosses the line and is far removed from just being a little not politically correct.
  6. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Sep 7, 2015 -> 04:30 PM) Danks has a pretty restricted contract for trading him. I doubt the Pirates would be a team on his short list. He can only block a trade to 6 teams.
  7. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 4, 2015 -> 01:52 AM) I can't take it when we get owned like this. I've turned down free tickets now in the beautiful middle level to 3 different Sox games cause I can't take the awful play vs. KC. Liar. You're such a closet Royals fan otherwise you wouldn't talk so much and so highly of them.
  8. QUOTE (shysocks @ Sep 3, 2015 -> 12:11 PM) ^^^ statement that has jumped the shark and become more annoying than people talking about their fantasy teams Nah. I'm not sure it's possible to be more annoying than somebody talking about their fantasy team.
  9. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 08:39 AM) IMO, the starting pitchers who are top-30 in fWAR should all be considered "aces" because, if they were all spread out on different teams, they would be the best starter on their team. I've always disagreed with this definition of "ace". There is a substantial difference between the best starter in the league and the 30th best. #1 is at 6.6 fWAR, #30 is at 2.8 fWAR. Well over twice as valuable. An ace is supposed to be the best of the best, not just the best on a particular team. I would consider the best of the best to be the top 10% or less which would mean at any given time there would be 15 guys or less considered "aces".
  10. QUOTE (Mike F. @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 06:13 AM) He is up to 239 with 6 starts left (according to my math) He could do it. If he gets 6 he has a legit shot. If they plug EJ in for a few starts and he only gets 5 more it will be real tough. Highest 6 straight start total this year is 75, highest 5 start is 65 so it is possible.
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 01:57 PM) That is such bull. Would anyone watch baseball if there was serious doubt over whether the games were fixed? Would you watch baseball again if it turned out the White Sox lost in the world series because the umpires were paid off? People certainly answered whether they would watch baseball if there were players on performance enhancers. The difference on the real "integrity of the game" is so gigantic it's not even debatable. I would say the NBA has survived their referee scandal pretty well.
  12. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 12:09 PM) Most of the evidence points to Jackson being innocent. He was a victim of the other 7 idiots using his name with the gamblers since he was the leagues star player at the time. No one disputes the black sox took money and threw the series. Jackson however did not. The White Sox are pretty short on historically great players, so it'd be great to see one of the few actually honored. 6 idiots. Buck Weaver was only banned for not informing officials when he caught wind of the scandal but otherwise had zero involvement.
  13. QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 1, 2015 -> 12:13 PM) He was acquitted but banned for not narc-ing on the others. He attempted to inform Comiskey of the scandal but Comiskey refused to meet with him.
  14. What a joke. All evidence points towards his innocence. Manfred just doesn't have the balls to reinstate him.
  15. QUOTE (bjm676 @ Aug 28, 2015 -> 10:55 AM) Would anyone be opposed if the Sox traded Avi over the offseason, to make room for Trayce? I know I wouldn't. it may be a bit premature to think he's the starting RF for next year, but it's nice to think they have options if the Avi experiment is a failure. I just don't understand this logic. Trayce is older than Avi and put up inferior numbers in the minors. Why do people all of the sudden think he's the answer? Because he's played good for the few games he's played? He put up low .700 OPSs in AAA. The odds of him just suddenly figuring it out at the ML level are not that high. I need to see at minimum another 200 PAs before I even consider beginning to make any sort of judgment on him.
  16. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 27, 2015 -> 10:57 PM) Yea but including spring and AAA he's at about 130. As I said, let him make 2-3 more starts and then shut him down. I see no reason to push him much past 140 or 150 this season. He hasn't needed to build arm strength so much as become more efficient and he's done well with it. Respectfully disagree with you here. The season is over as far as playoff aspirations it's time to protect some assets. The problem with only throwing him 140-150 is that next year when the team is going to want him to go close to 200 that is too big of a jump. He needs to be around 160-170 this year if he wants a realistic shot at 200 next year. He is at 122.2 with 7 rotation spots left this season. Averaging 6 innings per start would put him at 165.2 for the season. That is right about perfect.
  17. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 27, 2015 -> 12:58 PM) Mike Mussina, 270 game winner, 6 time top 5 CY voting, 9 time top 6 CY voting, 5 time All-Star, 6 time gold glove winner and 3 time MVP vote recipient received only 25% of the vote in his second year on the ballot. This does not bode well for Mark Buehrle. I just can't for the life of me figure out how the Hall of Fame voters can look at Smoltz and say he's a first ballot guy and then look at Mussina and only have 25% vote for him. It makes no sense. To me, Mussina should be in before Smoltz.
  18. QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Aug 27, 2015 -> 01:04 PM) I would hope people are smart enough to know games won are completely meaningless, especially in this day and age. Yes and no. On a season by season basis are they worthless? Yes. Over a 15-20 year career do they mean something? Absolutely.
  19. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 26, 2015 -> 08:13 AM) Good story. Pretty funny actually from my perspective but yea would've hated it happening to me. I think Belle was probably pretty much a jerk to everyone and frankly I loved his performance on the field. Despite all of Frank Thomas good years I think Belle put up the greatest season in Sox history in 1998. His 2nd half that year was crazy good. .387 BA. .451 OBP .816 SLG 1.267 OPS 48 doubles 49 HR for the season . Led the league in SLG , OPS, OPS+ and Total bases. That season was amazing but I still have to give the greatest season ever nod to The Big Hurt's 1994. Hard to say how he would have finished without the strike but its real hard to beat a .353/.487/.729 slash line. Belle '98 - .328/.399/.655/1.055, 113 R, 200 H, 48 2B, 49 HR, 152 RBI, 81 BB, 84 K, 165 wRC+, 7.1 fWAR in 163 games Thomas '94 - .353/.487/.729/1.217, 106 R, 141 H, 34 2B, 38 HR, 101 RBI, 109 BB, 61 K, 205 wRC+, 7.0 fWAR in 113 games Thomas '94 pace - .353/.487/.729/1.217, 152 R, 202 H, 49 2B, 54 HR, 145 RBI, 156 BB, 87 K, 205 wRC+, 10.0 fWAR
  20. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Aug 24, 2015 -> 01:57 PM) There is a lot of season left and the teams in front of the Sox are all pretty mediocre. Anything can happen.
  21. If the Sox are serious about making September interesting it has to start tonight. With 7 straight at home against the Red Sox and Mariners it's time to make a push.
  22. From what I can find, it looks like he wasn't added to the 40 man until September of 2013 when he was called up the Athletics. He would have then used an option in each of 2014 and 2015. He should have one option year left. He already spent more than 20 days in the minors this year so his option for this year was used and he should be able to be sent down. Not sure why they would DFA him.
  23. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 19, 2015 -> 09:40 AM) I love how Hawk combines Gio's offensive stats with flowers' to say "Our catchers aren't the problem." Considering that neither one plays another position, there is absolutely nothing wrong with combining their stats to assess your catching situation. Our catchers are pretty much middle of the pack across all of MLB. fWAR - 1.4 (16th) wRC+ - 88 (13th) AVG - .228 (18th) OBP - .291 (20th) SLG - .390 (15th) HR - 16 (12th) RBI - 49 (17th) Hawk's absolutely right when he says our catchers aren't the problem. There is really a lack of quality catchers in baseball and the days of catchers being big time offensive contributors are over.
  24. Sample size is everything. Could the guy be a solid major leaguer? Sure, but let's remember that he was putting up OPS's in the .730s in the minors. It's completely pointless to mention a player's WAR through 16 ABs.
  25. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 17, 2015 -> 10:43 AM) I honestly think Sale would probably say he's having a bad season. He hasn't been a perfect pitcher this season. He's had too many bad starts. And he has no shot at winning the Cy this year. Great pitcher though. Just not his year for that award. If he keeps going at the same pace he will have career bests in FIP, xFIP, SIERRA, fWAR, K/9, BB/9, K/BB, Ks, and IP. Currently leading the league in fWAR, FIP, Ks and K/9. I hardly call that a bad season and if he considers it to be, he is wrong.
