Why the Rangers succeeded and the Sox didn't...

What was the Padres excuse for not making the playoffs?  How about the Cubs and about 20 other teams?

Hindsight is 20/20. At the end of the day, under-performance of key pitchers and positions players thought to have had more potential sunk the season....particularly key starters and relievers.   Too few HR was another disappointment. No one has a crystal ball though.

Rangers have an owner willing to spend on premier FA.

Rangers hired a baseball person to run the baseball team.

Rangers' prospects developed properly and didn't bust after injury or unearned high dollar extensions.

Rangers didn't hamstring the FO with asinine short sided restrictions.

Rangers reached out to a HOF manager who wasn't drinking away his twilight years while being out of the dugout for a decade.

hiring a bunch of hack execs and an ancient drunk manager trumps player performence every time.

I'm sure if Hahn got to spend half a billion dollars on 2 players, this franchise wouldn't be the shape that it's in. jerry's insistence on nickel and diming his way to the money being spent worked about as well as everyone here thought it would.

I understand his line of thinking, that spreading out the investment over several players would minimize risk. What he doesn't understand is that those individual players he got for less money also have a much higher risk of not performing than the expensive players.

Harper and Wheeler make this team look a lot different. So would have a Hinch hiring. But do Eloy and Moncada still essentially bust? Kopech and Gio massively regress? It's tough to say if they'd be World Series bound at any point between 2020 and now. We'd have a hell of a lot more hope though.

I'm sure if they actually spent the money on Harper and Wheeler, Moncada and Eloy most likely don't get the deals they got. Hell, Moncada might not have been as terrible if he actually had to perform for his contract.

“Thought to have had more potential” is a nice way of saying they can’t scout, develop or coach well, so they have to hope for the 99th percentile outcome because they have no backup plan.

I mean, a half billion is Harper/Machado.

If fictional Reinsdorf is busting open they add Wheeler as well but who knows.

Too much obvious truth there to ignore, but it doesn't fit the party line.  We do look a lot better if you compare us to the many other failures instead of the few successes.

Funny, but they and I thought we had a gem in the rough that was derailed by COVID.  He's spent the last several years proving us wrong.  In the minors now, but numbers never so bad that he was a total wreck, except with the White Sox.  Someday, maybe the light will go on.

They were predicted to be closer to losing 90 than winning 90.

Padres is a mystery.

Harper, Schwarber Turner.. choked at the end.  Ketel Marte and the D Backs go into the WS as underdogs.

Phillies have had a hell of a run though the past two years...would love to see the Sox do something like that.

Anyway maybe in about 10 days, we'll know what moves Getz is going to start making.
