"go Woke, go Broke" is just as much of a Social Justice movement as "social justice", but no one wants to hear that.  People just find their ways to justify their own actions, while demonizing the exact same thing from others.

See Jerry Seinfeld, for example...well, critics are already having their revenge on his "Unfrosted" movie debuting this weekend.

"Jerry Seinfeld has joined the anti-woke comedy cries as It’s Always Sunny creator Rob McElhenney immediately proved him wrong. In recent years, a growing number of anti-woke comedians have denounced the shift away from ‘punching down’ comedy tactics in favour of more inclusive punchlines. Now, Seinfeld, 70, is making his agreement loud and clear..."

Usually, being one of the richest comedians in the world doesn't exactly improve your style and/or routine.  When you lose touch with your audience, it's easier to cast aspersions on them...but it's arguably more indicative of you yourself changing (or unwillingness to change as well) with the times.

well yeah those people were always morons (or brainwashed more likely), I'm making the point that 'social justice' tends to be a left-wing arena, ie expanding rights for the poor, strengthening worker protections, improving the environment etc. but now it's a corporate one. Nike and Disney are the arbiters of social justice and individuals can virtue signal to their peers what their political opinions are by the products they buy. If you didn't like billionaire Taylor Swift's new record, you're a misogynist. I've genuinely been called a racist because I said I didn't like Beyonce's music (I prefer Kelly Rowland). I wonder how much that company made off those signs that say "in this house we believe in science, women's rights are human rights, etc". I remember in grad school, some official from the mayor's office gave a presentation to my class about what the city is doing to support social justice. This woman says, "We at the city DESPISE CAPITALISM that's why we're going to give away public money to black and female real estate developers instead of white ones to build million dollar condos in black neighborhoods that nobody can afford". Then go look at Columbia University and you see trust fund 'socialists' beating up/kidnapping black maintenance workers to pwn the Israelis. These people genuinely have worms in their brains and their actions in the world are the opposite of what they think in their head they're accomplishing. To me that's worse than Cletus in West Virginia voting for Trump because he's never met anyone that didn't look like him.

Political ideation is now entirely based on patterns of consumption. Is the material world any better than it was a decade ago? I think it's worse.

It’s very very different from having pride in where you’re from.

I can see going to a game this summer out of nostalgia sake. I've seen so many games in person thru my life as a Sox fan I could see reminiscing at a Sox game. However I would barely pay attention to the game, like attending a minor league game. Sox are to the point it doesn't matter if they win or lose. They were out of the race after 2 weeks which is fricking amazing when u think about it. Corned beef forever!

Nice story on Schriffen in Chicago Magazine this month.  https://www.chicagomag.com/chicago-magazine/may-2024/meet-the-new-voice-of-the-white-sox/

That's a nice story but it's insane he played baseball at that high of a level and seems to know so little about it. It's like his brain turned off from 18 when he blew out his arm until late 30s when he got back into it on the announcing side.

I have nothing but respect for what Schriffen and Benetti are as people but their relative lack of experience before getting the job and the on the job training is hard to stomach as a Sox fan.

There’s a very recent example in Bud Light to refute that. Not starting a political argument or making a statement on the reason for the boycott, but it definitely made a difference for that company.

The Bud Light boycott is a different animal.

I like beer, and it's as simple as grabbing a pack of Miller Lite or Coors Light instead if I choose to boycott Bud Light. Still get to drink beer. No additional cost or effort involved.

I like to go to baseball games.  If I boycott the Sox I would need to go to Cubs or Brewers games, both much more inconvenient and expensive.

As annoyed as I am at JR I am not going to let him take away something I really enjoy.

Apparently I missed this post, so I’m going to just say a week later: what a useless comment, why don’t you write something smarter. Nobody can even tell what point you’re trying to make except to be condescending and dismissive. So why don’t you try making a point, brainiac.

My point was that you did exactly what you used every trite trope and made up fear factor from the last 8 years in the form of a long post as an attempt to justify your approach while denigrating others who do the exact same thing, which proved my point very nicely.  You are as much of a social justice warrior as any of the people who you spent all of that time being condescending and dismissive to in own post.

I am indeed a "social justice warrior", my politics are proudly left-wing, I am in favor of a society that distributes its wealth to the poorest among us and that all of us are treated as equals. Which is why I'm critical of people masquerading as such, using left-wing slogans and talking points to better serve the needs of business rather than people. I'm sorry that you can't see a contradiction there and can't see what the material impact of neoliberalism is in the real world. Seemingly the forward-thinking world you want to live in is one where there are 15 female MLB owners shoving gambling down kids' throats and a proportional rate of transgender drone pilots bombing weddings and cafes in Libya. Sorry that this is another "long post" but not every idea can be boiled down to 100 characters. The twitter generation...

Schriffen is causing the score to have a meltdown because he said something about radio losers clipping something that Gordon misread. Shane Riordan made a bunch of embarrassing tweets and then promptly deleted his own Twitter account.

Riordan has a history of popping off at the mouth.  Serious radio and Internet muscles on that guy.

I think it’s funny that he thinks the Chicago audience cares about him or Schriffen.  🤣

It is pretty hilarious that a bunch of dudes who sit and judge other people for hours as a job, are so sensitive to someone judging them for a couple of seconds.

Riordan reactivated his Twitter after deleting his reactionary comments about Schriffen and started backtracking.  Sox fans are calling him out on it.  This guy is a clown.

Look.  To a large extent sports radio is just a gossip column for guys.  If you are going to sit and talk s%*# about people for a living, you can't catch feelings when someone needles you back.  It's fragile and lame.

Exactly.  Riordan likes to dish it but can’t take it.  Many people are telling him that he and The Score are as soft as Charmin.

Shane Riordan is a douche, seems like a consensus.

But in terms of your statement of “dish it can’t take it” I think the same can be said about Schiffren here. He knew what he was doing with the line to Beckham. And ok fine, you want to take shots at sports radio host, or “dish it out” in this case, then don’t turn down media requests when someone has a question about the comments you chose to make on a MLB broadcast. That’s the “can’t take it” in this case

Agreed, Schriffen is a little too defensive (“haters” comment and now this).  I guess when the team sucks as bad as it does, these guys have nothing better to do than have these little cat fights.

Whoda thunk Shane Riordan would be who united Sox fans behind Scriffen. But the score has been trash for a while and Riordan has always been a worthless clown.

Meh. I can easily look at turning down an interview with the score as an integrity move....in that they're trash is beneath him.

Riordan thinks he’s the greatest radio producer of all time because he brings in some “notable” guests on the show.  It’s usually some B-level actor like Michael Rapaport.  🤣

The irony is that most of the sports radio personalities all worked the very same radio producer job before they made it on air.  It’s not even a very high paying job, but they have to work their way up doing it to get on air.  I think The Score’s management knows that no one wants to hear Riordan with his own show because he’s such a dbag and that’s why he’s still toiling away as a producer.

The truth is that the majority of posters on this site know more about the Sox and baseball than clowns like Parkins, Spiegel, and Riordan.
