Andrew Vaughn is Officially a Bust

Featured Replies

What a pity.

In the 2019, Andrew Vaughn was selected with the 3rd overall pick and for a player taken that high, he has never materialized as worthy of that selection. With a horrific start to the season batting .102, what is the likely future for this guy? To have almost zero production out him is a waste of a roster spot when I am certain we could get more production from almost anyone else.

It's crazy to think that many felt he was so good, he made Abreu expendable.

This guy is not getting any better and it is another catastrophic failure of the previous regime. I realize I do not post here often so obviously take my complaint with a grain of salt. I just did not see a thread on this and I felt compelled to start one.

  • This might be the first time I've ever heard someone claim that a player is on cruise control after signing an arbitration deal.

  • I think it is a combination out of several factors: -his plate discipline isn't as good as it looked in  college. He had huge walk rates in college but if you are that dangerous you will get walk

I don't see what bringing up Tim Elko would hurt. He, at worst...is still better than Andrew Vaughn.

There is no doubt that Vaughn is a huge disappointment. I thought he would develop into a great hitter.

But it didn't help he was rushed to the majors and then stuck in left field. It looked like he was afraid to have the ball hit in his direction. Maybe he was overrated; maybe he would have been better if his development was handled differently. But he hasn't produced the power numbers you expect from a first baseman, and he is off to an awful start.

Major liability having a weak bat at 1B. Problem needs to be addressed.

By Rizzo, JD Martinez or Rowdy Taller?  Those are just place holders.

We certainly don't give out Pete Alonso deals, at least not since the days of Dunn and Adam LaRoche...let alone anything resembling the Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., megadeal.

So the first reality for the Sox is likely a combination of Quero Elko Teel.

Or Colson Montgomery...

Yeah, he’s bad.

He was expected to take a step forward in ‘23 moving back to 1B, after a decent offensive season at 24yr.

He has only gotten worse every season, and this year’s start has me wondering if he’s an MLB hitter by end of season.

If Elko can add equal or better defense we should just release this guy.

it’s okay if he goes on to figure it out somewhere else.  Probably reached the point here where everybody needs a different direction.

Yesterday Vaughn looked like he didn’t have a clue at the plate, swinging at pitches way out of the zone. I wonder what players really work on in spring training that they are this bad when the actual season starts.

I viewed Madrigal and Vaughn at the time as similar picks:  high floor, low ceiling that  should give the Sox 2 fundamentally sound position players for a team that was coming together .
But Vaughn is just not fundamentally sound.
His D is iffy.
And on offense, aside from the lack of HRs (I never really expected him to be more than a 25 guy anyway), he just doesn't walk enough.  He's at  6.5% and dropping.   He should be at least 10%.  And if he were, his other numbers would be better to.

Elko will get a chance this season. Sox aren't just going to cut bait on AV 2 weeks into the season. He was playable 2nd half next season. But the writing is on the wall and this will be his last season; there is basically no chance he's getting tendered next season at this point. The play is hope he hits enough the next couple months to move him for a warm body.

Greatest college hitter ever!

it's crazy how completely unable he is to hang with 2025 MLB pitching.

It just continues to amaze me how many top prospects and consensus 1st round picks have absolutely busted here, and we see no signs of improving so far.

He's single handedly convinced me that you never ever, ever draft a 1B in the 1st round of the draft.

Weak bat, weak fielder, weak runner. What he makes this year will be his highest salary ever.

Hell get red hot for a a few weeks eventually but he can't figure out how to do it for longer. He's minor league fodder next year.

Send him down. He's getting a free pass playing so much while producing so bad.

With all the justified criticism of Vaughn, I can't help but wonder how much longer the team is going to go with Vargas? He simply can't hit. I don't know who would replace him but some kind of change at 3rd base has to happen.

I would imagine that when Josh Rojas is ready to come off the IL, they're going to have some opinions of this team to act on. That's still a way off.

He’s actually fielding though and can draw walks.  That’s more utility than Vaughn will ever offer.

This website i decided to check out for fantasy sports has projected Andrew Vaughn as the free agent that no one will pick up but can break out and it's so obvious that they've only seen the warning track balls not whiffing on three straight down the middle or even worse watching the third strike down the middle. the thing is if even if he hit 4 of those warning track balls he'd still be terrible like their other sweetheart jake burger is.

edit: too many supposed analysts are only analyzing from a gambling or fantasy sports view point and that's not baseball it's being a weirdo online.

I hate when teams do this. It can't help a prospect when he's stuck in the pasture of LF when he has no outfielder instincts at all. As much as rabid fans talk about not "rushing" a guy, a team has the audacity to bring a guy up and play him where he'll be scared and have embarrassing results.

....

I was surprised they tendered him for this season to be honest...but I guess he's not really blocking anyone and they didn't have anything to loss, but if he keeps this up, his major league fate is going to be relinquished to minor league deals and non-roster invites for the future.

That might have been Colson.
