Yeah, that's what I don't get.  If Sox draft him and want to give him $10 million, what difference does it make if Tampa Bay offers him $12 million?

I understand if its a high schooler or something.

Yeah he doesn’t really have a lot of leverage.

This reads like the kind of careful answer you give when you need to pretend he's not already your guy

  • This is the best news they could have received from these meetings. I do question Getz referring to it as an honor. Dude, it pretty much means your team really sucks.

  • Getz should get drunk tonight and sign an outfielder.

My preference in 2024 was "anybody but Smith."  I am more of a "do not draft" guy.

I still don't quite get why Sox need to honor other teams' promises to him:  He was a 3-year college player, so he had no leverage to not sign. Overslot obligation seems like another reason to pick someone else.

Given  that Sox philosophy is to overslot and punt, a comp pick would be particularly beneficial this year.

They haven’t really been “punting” but in order to go overslot without comp picks, the money has to come from somewhere.

It doesn’t really but teams like having agreements in place so that they know how much they can spend throughout rest of draft.

The only overslot picked in first10 rounds since 2020 to reach the majors are Burke and Cannon, 2 college pitchers.

In 2023, they decided to go underslot early instead of mid-rounds and ended up with Keener and Gonzalez from picks 3 and 1.    The one they played straight?  Grant Taylor pick #2.  Hopefully Oppr and Wolkow end up like early round picks.

They’ve done it with Bonemer and Fauske the last two years. Bonemer is a top 50 prospect in the sport. It’s how you get those guys. I just don’t look at the draft as slot amounts per round. I see it as, they have a certain total amount to spend and trying to get as much talent for that money as possible.

Now that Robert has been traded, does that pretty much end our chances of being able to acquire a tradable draft pick?

Can always trade prospects for draft picks.  Can trade anything with value for draft picks.  Matter if the Sox want to.

Lenyn Sosa + reliever maybe? That’s about all I can think of.

Agreed. Thats one that can and probably should happen.

Unless someone pops during the season and we get one at the deadline.

Roch, Bonemer, CMonty, BMonty, Carlson, and Acuna can flash the leather.

Last time, we got a draft pick + for just a reliever.   Call up Seattle and see what they need.

Who’s excited to overdraft to every bad game Roch has this year?  I know I am.

If he's not 4-4 every game people will go insane, gonna be an epic year.

I'm not sure your average Soxtalk poster will pay attention to college baseball if the draft threads/discussions are any indication. Probably for the best as well.

Having 1:1 will change that dynamic.

Won 't chart his game to game progress though. Maybe once a month when people get excited when he 's on a tear.

I hardly ever ( never say never) kick prospects when they are down.

I would think that would be different with the first overall pick.

Right on. But then, I remember how Boras made mincemeat out of our Hahn/Kenny duo in the Carlos Rodon signing, paying way over slot for a #3 pick.

Chris Getz isn't a weak ass dork like them.

Listening to the ping of the aluminum bat I am curious how much Roch has used wooden bats?
