Remember when you wanted to trade Moncada for a 55 FV prospect but weren’t sure that was doable. Maybe you should give Eloy some more time before jumping ship. He was arguably a top three offensive prospect coming into this season, that will still work even if he has to move to DH at some point.

I didn't watch this game, but the Walton stuff sounds like it was fun. I doubt that it will work over the long run, but sometimes it is really good not to take things so seriously. Bill Veeck had his failures but sometimes he did things that were just fun. The White Sox did something right here.

Walton is by nature someone that is going to be loved or hated. I found myself laughing more than I can remember watching a televised game. Would I want that all year? of course not.

And now Moncada is one of the top 10-15 position players in the game and easily within the 20 most valuable assets in the game. So yah, as CWS said, some patience with young players is needed. The Sox need Eloy in LF most days. He’s improved as the season has gone on, but obviously is still below average. I think he can become an average defender if he puts in the work. The Sox just need Eloy to hit like he can. The power is obviously there, but the hit tool just hasn’t been as strong as I expected. I suspect we’ll see major improvements in 2020, and it’d be nice if he could avoid injuring himself.

Hate or Love Walton, he definitely got the job done. The Sox broadcast was all over social media last night and still this morning. Personally I thought it was fun, 1 weekend of this is definitely the limit though as I can see Walton becoming exhausting very quickly.

It’s really one of the worst takes I’ve seen in Soxtalk history and dude should change his handle to “Cheese&Whine” because that’s all he does.

Okay...I'll toss some red meat to the pro-Eloy section.....is he a major liability in the OF? do we believe his defense is likely to improve w/experience? And...here comes the red meat..would you entertain trading him to someone like Seattle for, oh say Jarred Kelenic (LH OF prospect) and Logan Gilbert (strong RHP prospect)? Heresy, but if Eloy is DH only, maybe we should leverage his value before the luster wears off.

It was a special broadcast/game. I can't believe how Walton never ever was at a loss for words. Watch it again if you can. There were no pauses. Yes he did some trolling. But his pretending to be falling in love with the Sox was precious. It's like he was a one-man play on Broadway (OK Jason helped, too). Think of the things he also offered: He was offering all these wild facts about California; his little diatribe about how to drive to the Big A (all these highways he was rattling off), he mentioned all these books you should read, he mentioned all this stuff about the city of Chicago (Studs Terkel bridge reference priceless); he had the line of the year about never being a catcher cause he has problems getting low but never a problem getting high; he rattled off all the baseball managers he's gotten to know including LaRussa; his fascination with Ricky's squeeze bunt and saying Ricky to the Hall of Fame after he gets a new contract and "brilliant" was amazing. And his taking over the call of the final out with Benetti looking on in amazement/shock was priceless. Yes Billy Walton trolled the fans a bit. But it's like he was not only a color analyst, but superstar Broadway actor putting on a performance of a lifetime. I'm assuming he did it for free as well. That was talent, folks. He probably should have been paid cause Bill Walton worked last night. It may have been effortless for him but he worked. (Kudos to Sox network for putting in the pictures of mountains between innings and have Bill comment on them; and highlights of Bill's days at UCLA and Blazers).

Not hindsight. I said this 6 months ago. Harper was the perfect fit. Lefty power, high on base guy that you can plug into the middle of the order and the Sox have no clear internal option for RF.

And yet the Sox haven't been able to find a decent DH since Thome.

There really should never be a negative word written about Eloy, especially by fans of the rebuild. Most of the rebuild people have said all along we won't be any good until 2021 or later. The rebuild people tell you not to rush players and when they come up there will be a period of adjustment/improvement before young players presumably all take off as all-star talents about the same time. Thus one or two WS titles. So Eloy is 22 and in his "getting adjusted" stage. You better believe the Sox will have him work on his defense this winter or whenever. Maybe in the fall when the team is sitting home again. Eloy has already shown he's a superstar in the making, a guy if healthy who is going to hit 40 homers a season without exception. Why talk about Eloy. Let him turn into the superstar he's going to be. He's not going to look like a clown defensively his whole career, folks.

Hindsight is 20/20, but Harper should've been the primary target, not Machado. The Sox are likely better for it moving forward without Machado. Same can't be said sans Harper. We need a RF, and while I get the hesitance b/c we've been burned before on NL hitters, Harper is easily the most prolific talent with the largest set of tools compared to Dunn or LaRoche. Despite the huge addition of Machado, the Sox and Padres are both making the same modest improvements from last season.

Eloy might end up as a DH. Time will tell. But I don't want him moved. He's going to be a monster, and that's valuable whether he slots in as a LF, 1B or DH.

Honestly reading Walton's quotes from the game makes me think I guess you had to be there. I didn't see the game and many here seemed to enjoy it so great. In a lost season, getting any kind of positive national reaction is a good thing. I'm guessing that 1 game with Walton is more than enough even for those who enjoyed it. And about the game...it didn't take long for McCann to hit his 2nd grand slam

Dunn, Laroche and Frazier didn't fail because they were NL hitters. Laroche was 35 and really didn't want to play anymore; Dunn declined for some reason; and Frazier never was a great hitter to begin with - he popped homers out of the Cincy bandbox and people thought that would translate seamlessly to the Cell. Plus the Sox don't really bring out the best in the low BA, high walk, high K profile hitters: they seem to walk less, K more as the BA craters once they hit the southside. Harper is a completely different class of hitter.
