Fire Tony Chant

I feel like last year’s team was so much more loose and having much more fun. Almost like they saw TLR meandering around the ST fields and said, I don’t care who’s managing us or what he’s saying, we’re “changing the game.” Chains, celebrations, smiles, etc.

This year, from day one, it’s felt like a collective “oh boy, Gramps is still here?!” Total let down. They play with the energy and enthusiasm of their manager.

From DVS post game story, pretty well sums up the TLR situation this year:

"While he has been a lightning rod for criticism, it’s tough to pin these types of performances entirely on La Russa, who was hired to guide the Sox to a World Series title in their contention window. But La Russa has been criticized for lineup constructions, in-game decisions that include walking two batters intentionally with 1-2 counts and overseeing a team that often seems to lack urgency, gets outhustled, ranks at the bottom of the majors in defense and looks fundamentally challenged at times.

The Sox committed three errors Thursday."

Instead of chanting "Fire Tony", I think each individual in the crowd should shout out random sayings....it would be just like a LaRussa post game presser.

“Hey Tony, put your teeth back in.”

“Mr. La Russa, step out of the vehicle, and put your hands behind your back.”

“Hey Tony, you pooped your pants again.”

The White Sox lack a governing body over the conditions of their bodies, which is emblematic of a greater erosion of standards. Following up on the conversation in the comments a few days ago about the fights between Tony La Russa and Jimmy Piersall, Jon Greenberg pulled out a relevant passage from a Piersall book published in 1984.

Quote

LaRussa (sic) was so protective of his ball players that he defended (Greg) Luzinski the next day,” Piersall wrote. “No matter what, it couldn’t be a player’s fault. It was Harry or me who was the problem, he would say. He’d find some cock-and-bull excuse for his player and then rant about how we were maligning his wonderful players. Well, he said that the reason Luzinski didn’t really run it out was that his hamstring was bothering him and that he — LaRussa — had instructed Luzinski to take it easy so as not to aggravate the injury. What bullshit.

A couple of innings later, when Luzinski doubled to drive in the winning run, he didn’t dog it. He ran like hell. And what kind of managing would it be to put an injured player in a game and then tell him to take it easy, don’t bother hustling? Pure unadulterated bullshit. But that’s the way it was with LaRussa, a million excuses and a hurt little boy when someone said one of his players loafed or goofed up.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Maybe the "Fire Tony" chant isn't hitting close enough to home. Maybe a "Sell the team" chant would be a little bit more embarrassing to JR and get his attention.

Would Jerry Reinsdorf be petty enough to cancel a multi billion dollar transaction because of some fans chanting that?

Are those chants happening in recent games? Honestly, TLR has no business managing the team, but this team feels so broken in so many different ways.....just feels like doing that would make everyone feel better for a few days until we realize the players are still hurt and/or underachieving....this roster has like 5 1B on it, and the front office haven't treated the previous off-season like this team was actually a contender.

I don't think TLR will be back next season, but he won't be fired. I think it would have to be some mutual agreement and he becomes a part of the organization.

Worst part about the TLR hire is Reinsdorf and La Russa thought it would work. They wanted to cement Tony's legacy.

Instead they've razed it to the ground.

As it deserves to be. Tony was always horseshit with the Chicago White Sox, took advantage of steroids and coasted off of superior FOs when Jerry placed him in Oakland and later in Saint Louis.

He still fucked up two of the three Oakland World Series despite being heavy favorites.
