9/14 GT - White Sox @ Guardians (5:40pm CT)

Newcomb + Burke vs. Williams on the mound.

The Sox enter the series just a 1/2 game up on the Guardians. Winning at least one game is absolutely essential. If we go 1-2, we’ll be tied in the loss column, but will have secured the season tie-breaker. While the Guardians would technically be up 1/2 a game on us, we’d effectively be up 1/2 game like we are today due to the tie breaker. At minimum, we can’t leave Cleveland without at least securing one W.

If we can somehow leave the series with at least one W, we do have an easier schedule to end the season. Both teams play three games against KC on the road. Both teams play bottom three teams at home with us getting the Rockies and the Guardians getting the A’s. The big difference is we have four games against the Tigers at home while the Guardians have three in Boston. Obviously you still have to play the games and Sox aren’t playing well right now, but every little edge matters at this point.

Finally, we really need to come out focused tonight. This is the game we have the best shot of winning IMO. Burke has had two stinkers in his three starts and appears to be wearing down, but remains our most talented SP and the guy I’d put out there in a win or die moment. Williams is obviously very good, but the Sox face two lefties who have dominated us this season the next two games. It really feels like if you don’t win tonight, then you’ll be facing an uphill battle the rest of the series. Venable must do everything in his power to win the game tonight.

Let’s fucking go!

We need to take 2 games. The rubber meets the road now. No excuses. We did this to ourselves and we'll have to grit our teeth and climb out of this mess somehow. They need to leave CLE up 1.5 games.

It's hard to be optimistic at this point from what we have seen lately. BUT this team has a flair for the dramatic.

I do think you have to put your hottest hitters in the line-up for the whole series (Yes, I'm talking about Grichuk).

The demise of Mune is baffling and just doesn't make sense. If the baseball gods owe us anything I would wish for Mune to get hot the last 13 games of the season.

Here's to hope..............

I would bat Mune 9th. The only good thing he has done during this slump has been getting walks. Grichuk should be hitting 3rd or 4th.

you gotta move Murakami to the bottom of the order, leave Doyle and Acuña on the bench, play Grichuk in RF all 3 games

They have to beat Griffin on Tuesday....up to Davis Martin.

Monday would seem to give the second best odds but Gavin Williams throws gas just like the Pirates' youngsters.

Wednesday early day game against Messick and maybe Kay or Fedde or Castillo or Hagen....God knows.

They are unlikely to pitch Sandlin on short rest, or bring up Thorpe for what could be the most important game of the season.

Like was stated by the OP the Sox have to get at least 1 against the Guardians. If they are swept they will not only be 2nd in the AL Central they will be more than likely at least a game back of Toronto for the final WC spot unless they are swept at home by Detroit in their next 3.

Toronto, Texas, and Baltimore are all still alive for the final WC spot and Toronto plays Baltimore 3 more and Texas 3 more.

At this point the Sox just have to win. It's a 13 game season. They still need no help from anyone as long as they win. Worst case if they are swept by the Guardians they probably have to go 10-3 to have any chance at the WC.

Could it be that Mune has not recovered from his injury? He's not the same hitter since he has come back from the injury

I prefer option A

it's not like the offense is being completely shut down, they're getting a ton of opportunities each series to drive in runs, it's up to Venable to put guys in the right spot to be there when those opportunities happen

No matter how they have looked lately, they have to step up for a series like this . it's like a post-season series that will have a playoff atmosphere . I hate the idea of backing into the playoffs, but just get in and see what happens . baseball people are jumping off of the sleeping pick bandwagon like mad, but I still think that we have a shot.

Even bad teams win lots of games in baseball.. so statistically it feels very unlikely the Sox get swept again, right!?

I am really thinking we need to win at least two out of three yet I see no idea how it happens. So we shall!

The players know what is at stake so you hope they can respond.

As for me I've got my fingers crossed as a Sox fan for 65 seasons and am hoping for the best. But the club looks to be in a bad frame of mind right now and the results this month speak for themselves.

I'm skipping following this one tonight, I'll be watching the Broncos/Chiefs game. I'll check in later for the final score and to review to box score.

It's all up to them, whatever happens this series they'll have no one to blame or nobody else to take credit but themselves.

The rare Bama on the big board! This series is now blessed

Lets fogging go!!

Win tonight and take the pressure off for the rest of the series.

I’ll be pleasantly surprised if the Sox win the division. Kind of expecting 6-7 or 7-6 the rest of the way and having to go to Cleveland or Houston to win 2/3 to move on to the DS.

I’d be happy with 3-4 this week and the Rangers and Blue Jays going 3-3.

If they play like the team we've seen all season I expect this series will go just fine (hopefully 2/3) and we'll win the division.

Whats the team we've seen all season. Outside 3-4 hot weeks in May they're below .500

Biggest series of the season. We better fucking show up.

Wouldn't you at least check in during the game as opposed to just checking in for the final score?

After the collapse the past few weeks my blood pressure needs a break.
