Sox swing and a miss with black history month graphic

Recommended Posts

Frank Thomas got snubbed. I am so mad over this. He has to be everybody's favorite Sox player of all time. I mean, yeah some of the old, old old timer pitchers were amazing but Frank Thomas??? He IS the White Sox. The Sox should fix the graphic now and add him for one. For two, they should fire anybody and everybody who had anything to do with that graphic.

And I'm furious about Bo. My gosh ... the most electric player (arm, speed) in Sox history. Bo fricking Jackson got the snub. What in the heck is this organization doing?? If you are gonna do a graphic mentioning so many people, double and triple proofread it for heaven sake.

Thanks for your service Big Hurt!!! You are my favorite hitter of all time; pitcher Gary Peters.

I thought that was clumsily handled as well. It's really BLACK AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH and not "Cubans with African descent month". They could have said something about how Minnie was treated because of his skin and helped break the color barrier for foreign players as well as US blacks, but they half assed it.

The f*** up here is that they cite Minoso breaking the color barrier, Al Smith as the first Black All-Star, but then use African American throughout. So it creates intense confusion.

Definitely think there was a way to incorporate one of, if not your most, notable former players a little more. They do reference him with the MVP's after Dick Allen. His picture should probably have been in there instead of Bo in the 1990's bullet.

Having said that, the post was reflecting "upon momentous FIRSTS for the White Sox" organization. Was Frank the "FIRST" to do anything in team history?

BHM is 28-days long, perhaps there are more coming singling him out, who knows.

He was first player in MLB history for have 7 straight seasons of .300, 20hr, 100 rbi, and 100 walks. I also believe he was first with 400 home runs (and all time leader) and 1st two time MVP in franchise history!

He has a million firsts - this was not a fluke - this was done on purpose.

Frankly (pun unintended), I find it unlikely that there was any intent to exclude the Big Hurt from the graphic. I don't really know who would have a beef with him, first of all. And then I don't know why that person would be involved in the minutiae of making the graphic. My gut feeling is it's just someone who was given a task of talking about firsts and missed the forest for the trees. If I was running the show over there, part of my response would be putting everyone through a White Sox history bootcamp. There's a decent chance that the people putting this together were born after Frank's best years were behind him. That's not really an excuse because you need to communicate to your fans, not to yourself. But it rings as a likelier explanation than people being pissed off at Frank.

I'm pretty much going to ride or die with the Big Hurt, but I think he's making himself look kind of bad here too. Definitely making the Sox look worse, but he comes off as sensitive. Maybe there's some hard feelings about the role he'd like to have in the organization or TV channel or whatever. It wouldn't be the first time and he's not always wrong about how he feels but he seems to just wear it all on his sleeve.

The first thing was my initial shrug and thought it was a tad overblown.

Then I read the bullets.

Plenty of second person things on this and others that kind of warrant acknowledging.

Frank Thomas should have gotten his own page and Dye should have have gotten a blurb about being on the World Series team.

Anyone involved in that should not be involved in anything related to that kind of work again.

Being the only World Series MVP in your franchise's history seems slightly noteworthy.

Based on this?

I think he’s a greedy and stubborn prick, but calling him racist feels kind of lazy.

I have two thoughts on this;

one, he is the best hitter this organization has ever seen, and this was quite the accidental omission

two, maybe they were rolling out these facts all month and he could have been all over the rest of the month.

either way, egg on everyone’s face, it doesn’t look good for anyone involved

I think the poster meant the new version of racist which doesn’t mean racist and confuses everybody

Unhinged.  You probably also thought putting a black square on social media was combatting racism.

Jerry Reinsdorf is a lot of things, but everything indicates that racist is not one of them.  I can't thing of anything he's said or done as Sox owner over the years that shows that he's prejudiced against any minority group.

The best explanations to me is that this snub is a) due to organization incompetence or b) veiled vindictiveness against someone who doesn't sing praises to the Sox organization.  Both of those possibilities is very much on brand with Sox ownership.  Who knows, maybe JR doesn't like the way Big Frank eats.

Also, he's not a Boomer.  Boomers are people born between 1946 and 1964.  He predates that by almost a decade being born in Feb. 1936.

Look I think not a fan of Jerry, but the idea that he is writing press releases for Black History month seems patently absurd on the surface.

Don't put down to malice what incompetence explains. Our marketing dept sucks.

this organization has to have that consistency of suck in every dept.

It's very hard for me to believe omitting arguably the best player in White Sox history from a graphic was a mere oversight.  The administration is acting like the group of vindictive, unprofessional bitches that they are, and that makes them repellent to the baseball universe.

They have had a lot of these under JR including some situations with the Bulls too, as in the Thibodeux press release statement to the media.

But specifically regarding the Sox you can go back to Carlton Fisk being released after he traveled with the team to Cleveland. He had to make his own way back to Chicago while the Sox didn't even have a press conference instead sending out a press release to the media.

They really don't seem to have a good grasp of these type things.

I don't know why but I got a little sad just now thinking of then the Bulls fans booed Krause's wife during one of their reunion nights at the UC a few years back. Krause takes some blame of course for how he was perceived, and MJ of course -- but also JR contributed. JR never gave Krause the public backing he deserved. JR def holds grudges. I still think he blames Krause for breaking up the Bulls when the reality is much more complicated.

One of the most horrific and embarrassing moments in the reinsdorf ownerships(both of them) and that is saying a lot

That was such a low moment but frankly an example of how bad/how naive these organizations are. Because the fans were obviously going to boo anyone or anything to do with Jerry Krause and they never should have put that poor woman in that position. Anyone with two brain cells could've told you that.

It was even worse that they put his picture up first so the fans didn’t really know she was there for him, so it was like setting the fans up to boo
