If Carlson was the main piece going for Detmers, that deal would have been done.

I disagree but maybe I give everyone too much credit. You don’t give up top 30 Position prospect for number 3 starters.

How is castillo worth anything at his full contract. Guys got negative value. Just weird. He's washed

If you took out Boston Smith, maybe the trade would make some sense. I can’t fathom how taking on a worse contract than the one we gave up required us to give up a legitimate prospect. I don’t even

Yes and they have a 380 woba against him

His wOBA against on the road is like .364. It's ugly.

Everyone talked about trading every great kid in the system for some mediocre JAGs. ‘sah matter with youze? People had their sights way too high. We got a body, and that’s all the Sox were gonna be doing. 2027 is the year. Wait for Thorpe and Smith in the meantime

Castillo isn’t a rental…he’s going to be here next year. For everyone celebrating we are finally spending money, this is your big Christmas present. Hope you like it for the next 15 months instead the bevy of more talented pitchers that will be available in free agency.

Ishbia must have been part of this.

Don’t think he would dump Castillo but you are really only taking on 12.5 next year when you factor in you were gonna pay Dominguez 10 mil next year. No way he hits 180 innings if He continues to be bad next year for the 2028 to vest

Kind of like Benintendi is "only" that amount but still keeps sticking around year after year...

This is your “attendance is higher than we thought” addition

I don’t believe he is

So this move doesn't even move Davis Martin out of #2 in the rotation?

Castillo has a 4.82 xERA…his performance has been arguably worse than Fedde’s. I think he’ll outperform Erick moving forward, but he’s probably neck & neck with Kay right now for the #3 spot short of major improvements.

Why? He has like 9 Billion. You mean he is just standing by while these deals are done ?

To me, nothing jumps out to explain the decline from last year to this year. He lost some heat on the heater a few years ago but it didn't have an immediate effect on his effectiveness. K rate finally dropped last year but he held up okay. This year it caught up with him. Stuff models not seeing a big change in the recent past. I notice his arm angle has ticked down a little bit, but not enough that I'm convinced it means anything.

Although this has unequivocally been a down year and not a good season, there's really no metric or projection that thinks he has "deserved" a 5 ERA or will continue to have an ERA so high. More like low to mid 4 depending on your metric of choice. That's still worse than he has been before. The most predictive single stat for future ERA is SIERA which is 4.39 for Castillo this year.

His slider isn't getting whiffs this season like it generally has in the past. The shape and velo seems about the same as before. Might be losing deception for one reason or another. Or he's not locating well enough.

I'll be curious whether Getz or someone else in the Sox org has anything interesting to say about what they've been seeing besides "this guy's a horse, look at the back of the baseball card"

Ugh, what a waste of financial flexibility. It's too bad the Red Sox got good again, otherwise we could have traded for Sonny Gray.

He's actively trying to devalue the team in order to buy even cheaper shares than @ $1.8 billion valuation?

Not so sure of that - LA’s price was said to be “astronomical” and I don’t think Billy meets that bar as a main piece considering LA’s needs.

They never really seemed to be a match for Carlson in my eyes.

That’s because the Sox signed him to that dumb contract to Begin with it’s not like he keeps hitting a games played number to get an additional year added to it

Yeah, but we're not seeing a decrease in velocity or anything that drastic in pitch shapes. He's also not walking more guys. It's simply that guys aren't swinging at his slider anymore.

I think there are clearly going to be more moves here. We've seen multiple sources say rhey want one more starting pitcher, a reliever, and a catcher. Would love Holmes as the second starter/

No he is adding a wing to his mansion on the North shore and buying some horses for the stable there.

With age/overuse usually goes the crispness on pitches.

Certainly saw it with Shields...who was even less velocity-reliant than Castillo.

What’s our payroll? It’s been barely above minimum wage until Mune

Who was the last big "name" starting pitcher they added at a deadline prior to James Shields?

(Yes, that was May 2016.)

Francisco Liriano?

Jake Peavy

Are teams stacking lineup with lefties?

IDK, but he does have a pronounced platoon split (albeit at a similar level that he has always had)

No disrespect but earlier in the thread you are talking about them targeting top guys like Mason Miller.

Your point is correct, JR does not shoot for the best (remember his comment about finishing second or third?) so to think they are going after guys like that just is not realistic.

Again maybe when Ishbia takes over.

We'll see what the next 48 hours bring.

Targeting top of the line starters or elite bullpen arms with control in the trade market is EXACTLY how they have to operate if ownership isn’t willing to buy those assets in free agency yet.

I don’t understand your point.
