Eloy was a consensus top 10 prospect in all of baseball and many had him as a top 5 prospect. He had limitations being a bat only prospect, but the offensive potential was incredibly high. His trade value was enormous when we acquired him for Quintana. Whoever told you this “story” appears to be lacking general baseball acumen.8 points

I wouldn’t call this ‘having fun’. Not my definition of the phrase. Or most people’s. one also might assume that, even if Robert and Benny are traded (the ostensible bats you’re referring to), Lee/thais and Amaya are being replaced with bat-first players. I don’t think you can project a worse offense than last season, and the shutout counter was a tired meme by midway through the season (on the worst team ever).4 points

Gotta give Cannon credit. Battled through an up and down start. The Angels are not good, but nice job.4 points

This post is wild to me. Canario is one of the worst contact hitters in all of baseball. His contact rate in AAA would have been the worst in the majors by two full percentage points. Why is that going to get better in the majors when he consistently faces quality pitching? You’ve become so attached to his power that you have ignored that he brings nothing else to the table. When he was DFAed by the Cubs, not one of 29 GMs was willing to trade a prospect for him. Meanwhile, Brooks Baldwin is an extremely versatile player who provides good defense all over the field. Offensively he’s well rounded with solid tools across the board. However, the kid is just a pure “baseball player” and maximizes his physical ability. If you watched him in AA last year, he just has that “it” factor as a hitter. You say his ceiling is a super utility guy, I’d argue that’s his floor. If we gave him everyday at-bats I see him being a ~1.5 win player at minimum. If he can grow into a bit more power and become just a bit more disciplined at the plate, I could see a guy who is a 2.5 to 3.0 win player who effectively serves as your 10th man rotating across the field on an everyday basis. Having a guy like that is super fucking valuable…he’s basically a Dodgers prototype prospect.4 points

I was told that because I started the first game thread and they won, that I have to start the next one. OK...here you go. Can they make it two straight to start the season?????3 points

I guess. I can imagine a world where Thaiss gets traded for not much and Lee and Teel are their tandem. I could even see a world where they carry 3 catchers and one of the catchers is a DH almost every day. Korey has looked good this Spring, and arms like that don’t grow on trees.3 points

And two guys that if they did a second of scouting would have recognized how athletically limited they were.3 points

We didn't ruin s%*#. Vaughn has had two off seasons to make adjustments. The White Sox aren't telling him to have one of the worst LA in all of MLB.3 points

Why is every thread on this board suddenly about Canario? Maybe he’s gonna be good or bad but he’s hardly the most important story in mlb.3 points

Why does Baldwin have no business being in RF? That was his primary spot as a sophomore in college. With the log-jam in the IF, I’d 100% give him regular playing time in the OF. I just wasn’t sure if they’d actually do it, but you should be ecstatic. This is way better than giving at-bats to someone like Canario.3 points

Need a Nastrini redemption season. With our AAA depth chart decimated, Nick has a chance to get some serious major league action if he can return to his previous fringe top 100 prospect form. It seems like some of the mechanical changes he made last year were paying off and hopefully they carry forward into this season. Would be awesome if him or Iriarte could eventually take Perez’s roster spot.3 points

A prospect is an unknown commodity and their trade value is tied to how others’ perceive the potential of said player. Pretending they were valueless at the time of their prospect peak because they ultimately failed years later is revisionist theory at its finest. Ultimately, if a member of the Cubs front office was laughing they could “give away” a consensus top 10 prospect who was arguably the best prospect in his international class (they gave him $2.8M to outbid all the other interested teams) then they should not be part of a major league front office. The Cubs could have traded him (even moreso when combined with Cease) for all sorts of impactful players…instead they chose Jose Quintana.3 points

God I’m so happy we’re past the previous era. I was thinking about Eloy the other day and thought, damn what a terrible baseball player.3 points

Can you also believe that your favorite team has started Jacob Amaya at SS, Michael Taylor in LF, and Nick Maton at DH? 🤣2 points

He was dfa'd because he's out of options and those teams are full of outfielders, whereas the Sox have several vets who are useless to Sox beyond this year while their couple of viable prospects are two years away2 points

I fully expect far more offensive performances like today's than Thursday's. Once again, fundamentals lose the game. Allowing a two-out RBI and a two base wild pitch setting it up. Little things add up.2 points

If Baldwin can just be league average with the bat, he can be a highly valuable player.2 points

His job is to get on base at an elite clip, no idea where this idea he needs to impact the baseball comes from to be a useful major leaguer (he‘s a star if he does). Regardless, the dude put up league average exit velocities for Boston’s AAA last year. He isn’t Jeff Kent out there but he also isn’t Nick Madrigal.2 points

It’s so obvious that Schriffen loves the NBA way more than baseball. He actually knows basketball while he’s clueless with baseball. Hilarious.2 points

Dylan Cease alone won that trade for the White Sox, no matter how badly Sox player development screwed up Eloy.2 points

Not just “many” teams. Five specific teams. Those GMs must have messaged Bartolo to tell him they were about 90% likely to put in a claim, but all five ultimately decided against it.2 points

Montgomery is going to be up in a couple of months. Where is Baldwin going to play then? There aren’t enough spots for all the 3B/2B types. And you’d rather give limited our at-bats to a highly limited, weak side platoon guy with massive contact issues whose prospect status has completely eroded vs. a strong all-around player with tons of versatility whose prospect status has skyrocketed? The odds of Canario ever being a key role player in the majors are very slim whereas Baldwin has poor man’s Zobrist potential (I know it’s an overdone cliche at this point but it’s true in the case) and a very high floor as a regular UT guy. If you want a prototypical RF with plus power, then go sign one in free agency when the time is right. Don’t try to fit a square peg in a round hole with a Canario type prospect. Invest in the better baseball player in Baldwin right now by giving the at-bats where a spot is open and find a different role for him later.2 points
