You look at this line up and wonder why, unless the game is out of hand, would anyone throw Robert a strike.4 points

I’ll do one better: A week ago, if somebody offered me $1,000,000 to correctly answer which sport and team Nick Maton played for, I wouldn’t be any richer.4 points

Alright boys, we officially have our first rubber match of the season. Lineups are obviously not out yet, but the Angels will be starting Jack Kochanowicz today. He is a massive RHP who uses a sinker heavy arsenal (73%) to generates a ton of groundballs (57%) similar to Soriano. However, he differs from the latter in that he’s got better command but weaker secondaries. As such, he won’t walk a lot of guys but won’t K too many either (his 3.4 K/9 rate last year would make Jared Shuster look like Randy Johnson in comparison). This guy should be much more beatable than Soriano yesterday. In terms of lineup construction, we need guys with speed or guys who are more likely to keep the ball of the ground. And as much as I want Vaughn riding pine, the lack of better options at the moment and the fact he has a bomb off Kockanowicz would have me slot him in at DH. On top of that, I’d move Vargas over to 1B today, play Baldwin at 3B, go with Maton at SS, Sosa at 2B, Thaiss at C, and an OF of Benitendi, Robert, & Taylor. It’s not a sexy looking lineup, but the goal today should be to scrap some hits together and manufacture a few runs. After two strong starts from Burke & Cannon, it should be very clear this Angels lineup is very much beatable. I’m optimistic Martin will continue that trend today with five or six quality innings. If the offense doesn’t beat itself today by pounding every ball into the ground, I think we should win this one. Bold prediction is a 3-2 win to take the series. Let’s fucking go!3 points

Yeah, but they don't get to play this pretty crappy Angels team every day.3 points

I’m pretty convinced we’ll just have the worst offense in baseball every year Getz is in charge.3 points

I'd be giving Korey Lee a lot more starts than Thaiss despite Thaiss being the strong side of the platoon. Korey works very hard on his hitting and has made some changes. He needs to play to see if those changes have helped. He hit well in ST and I like the extra power and his great pop time.3 points

Yeah you’re cutting an OF when Tauchman comes back anyway so why not just claim him over Jankowski and try to sneak him through later? Who knows, an injury can even lead to playing time and a need.2 points

That was such a sad 9th inning. Jansen had nothing and we couldn't do Jack s%*# against him.2 points

Yup, we’re in year two of a rebuild so we should just dump an actual prospect in Baldwin after three games and go sign the UT version of Jankowksi2 points

If you’re first pitch hunting against a guy not throwing strikes, it’s got to be something you’re certain you can square up on and likely advance the runners.2 points

Seems it might be contingent on how fucked the right side of the infield is since they couldn't get the tarp on it for a prolonged period.2 points

If Vaughn hits a homer here no one can say anything bad about him for two weeks.2 points

Yep, it’s pretty shocking that a terrible owner whose team is now on its second rebuild since 2016 isn’t the belle of the ball! Crazy…2 points

Fully agree. Will be a bit better when Tauchman & Rojas are here. Jankowski really shouldn’t be on a major league roster. And Amaya and Maton leave a ton to be desired for even if they were just bench pieces. Just a lot of bad depth options for Venable unfortunately. That being said, Sosa should be DHing over Maton regardless of handedness.2 points

My priority would be to start Vargas, Sosa, Lee and Baldwin in as many games as possible. None of them should be platooning right now. They can play matchups with Amaya/Taylor/Slater vs. Jankowski/Maton2 points

What is the point of a lefty bat if he can’t hit and has little power? DH’ing Maton and leading him off reminds me of TLR and his fetish for Leury Garcia.2 points

I’m curious to see the moves that they make going forward (starting from this just recent offseason) with more of Getz’s people are in place. There’s Ryan Fuller and there’s the new analysts in the organization2 points

They will get it in one way or another. Angels only trip in. Schedule it for March. Smart. Angels have LA weather, yet play on the road 15 of their first 18 games. Smart.2 points

The Angels also stink. I'll take the possibility of actually winning a series when you can.2 points

What rah rah stuff ? There's always good things happening along with the bad. I'm encouraged by the pitching and defense so far. Might have hitting reinforcements once they get the extra year on a few guys or at the latest after they trade or DFA more guys. So many prospects to follow in the minors. I could do without all the Tommy Johns though . An acceptable amount is one thing. 6 is crazy and the year has barely started.2 points
