  1. The time has come to bump this thread. I am officially one win away. I know some people thought I was flushing money down the drain, but it feels good to have 25 chances to get that last win. If I do win, it’ll probably buy me two or three beers at the next game I attend. Maybe even a hot dog. P.S. This was a fun thread to read through, eight months later.

  4. While both teams are probably really happy, the White Sox got 4 players, three of which are contributing to the ML roster and the other is flying up the prospect rankings. Whenever you can trade 1 player you have no intentions to keep for 4 players who will be here for several years it’s a massive win.

  5. Whew. Salvaged one. Yankees are tough right now. Glad to see Smith and Perez pitch well after the first two games.

  11. Well they are getting more out of Vaughn than the Sox did with Civale. He helped spur that long win streak when a bunch of their guys were on the IL so yes I agree you AND the Brewers are going to make the playoffs. No question as it turned out they got the best end of the trade. All the Sox got was another stiff who ate some innings. And I'm not saying they should have kept Vaughn, he needed to get out of this insane asylum as soon as possible to try to get his career going again.

  13. Bonemer finished 3-4 with a double, 2 HR, and a walk for good measure. Very hot start in WS, 6-18 with 5 XHB through 5 games (2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR). 4 walks to 4Ks. Dash won 5-0, Oppor finally gets his first W at the level.

  14. Good start for Oppor: 5IP, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 6K. Efficient 66 pitches, barely broke a sweat.

  15. Good post. Suburban ballpark developments work in Atlanta and Arlington because of the sprawled nature of those regions and the culture of decentralized, car-oriented development there. I don't think it would work well in most cities and certainly not Chicago. A "baseball village" at, say, Arlington Park would definitely have a "mallpark" feel whereas a development either at 35th St or the 78 could be integrated into the surrounding urban environment and could feel more organic. As I've posted before, I don't think the Sox catering to people who are afraid of the city and afraid to take mass transit is a winning formula for future success. And yes, I'd imagine the Ishbias would be crazy to not conduct some formal analysis of the feasibility of developing the parking lots around Rate Field into some sort of "ballpark village" vs. building a privately-funded ballpark at the 78 and developing the land there along with the Fire for retail/restaurants. One benefit of a new stadium at the 78 is that the new owners could rid themselves of the well-documented design flaws of the current stadium. We'll see what they decide to do. It's not my billions. If (and that's a huge IF), the Sox do move to the 78, I can't imagine the 70+ acres that the ISFA owns at Rate Field would fall into vacant lot or "dollar lot" status. It's location in a gentrifying area and close to mass transit lines is too valuable for that to happen. With the demand for more housing in the area, it's a prime candidate to be developed into a residential area that can probably provide a mixed type of housing that has been in demand.

  21. It prolly doesn't seem that way but I hear you, LipMan. I just think in our Sox case the tank/rebuild thing has been an utter DISASTER. For gosh sakes Bill Veeck at least tried to win (1977 pitch at risk to Richie Zisk). And something you and others won't explain to me: How the heck do fellow low market teams KC, Cleveland, Minnie Detroit do it? It ain't the tank/rebuild method. They just get enough players to compete. Sorry to be a broken record; the losing just tears me up year after year.
    2 points
  22. Once again this false narrative comes to the forefront. I don't know of ANY Sox fan...NONE who "don't mind" losing, tanking, rebuilding. But when you have an owner who refuses to compete, who refuses to spend money, who refuses to take any risks, who thinks players are overpaid and still yearns for a salary cap...rebuilding, tanking is basically the ONLY WAY to maybe get out of the cesspool he created. Will it work? It hasn't so far that's for damn sure but odds of a 1,000-1 are still better than zero because JR is simply not trying to win anymore. Period...full stop...end of story.

  23. Looks good for both teams, but who can really say? Crochet could get injured, Montgomery could bust, etc. All four players performing at the major league level would make it a big success...but Crochet is one of the best pitchers, if not the best, in the league for a while if he doesn't get hurt. I think as it stands, both teams got what they were looking for. I liked it at the time and still do. Really like Teel, but didn't love getting another catcher because Quero might end up a better hitter and neither guy looks like an elite defender/game caller. Plus Korey Lee is more than serviceable as a backup. I liked Mayer and obviously Anthony as the 'big' piece. Getting Anthony would've been a huge steal whereas Mayer probably would've been an overpay (Kyle is at .779 OPS in 205 PA, Mayer at .674 in 136 and keeps getting injured). I might've wanted Bleis too, but he's had a really tough year, .550 OPS at AA. Getting Braden was awesome and I don't think Boston knew what they had with him. Still could bust, but I think he's going to show out like his brother from another mother, Colson. Wanted to draft him in the first place. His injury was overblown and I think we got a steal there. Meidroth and Gonzalez were basically just 'some guys' but really nice tertiary pieces. Meidroth has been up and down but has been better defensively than expected and still looks like a potential leadoff hitter. At worst, utility infielder who puts the ball in play and actually looks very good at both SS and 2B. tbh, I don't think it would have been crazy to send him down at some point or even start him at AAA next season depending on how spring training goes. His command of the strike zone hasn't been as good as advertised. Wikelman has also been pretty good in limited time. He's looked better in MLB than in the minors which is interesting. That seems true of several Sox players. I think he'll start striking more people out, his stuff looks good, but the walks are a little scary. All in all, I like the trade and I'm happy Garrett is doing well!

  26. Yankees lost 3 out of 4 in NY against the Red Sox. Boston wins 6 of 7 on the road against New York and Baltimore then comes home and loses 2 out of 3 in Boston against the lowly Pirates. Blue Jays lose 2 of 3 at home against Brewers. AL East are all killing each other going down the stretch. Maybe the Tigers or Astros will eventually win the AL crown.

  28. Well said. I think in retrospect, to your last paragraph, you're totally right. They're doing some big real estate projects even further south, along the Green Line '43 Green' just came up and the second phase is already completely leased. Unsure if it's actually open yet, if it is, just recently. Some of the newly built townhomes around it have sold for over $800k in the last 5 years. Have to imagine there's even more potential 10 blocks north from a developer standpoint. Makes me wonder why JR didn't see this potential, but then again, he's involved with Wirtz in that huge development project around the United Center and it's probably not feasible to do both. Might be a big opportunity for Ishbia as you say. I'm definitely biased, but I'd love to see some Sox-centric development at the site and the state's involvement could garner some nice concessions for the community (like a much-needed grocery store). I might speculate that some kind of 'ballpark village' could spark something across the expressway at the site of the former Stateway Gardens which is still mostly vacant (but well taken care of) 20 years after its demolition. Pretty sure CHA still owns that land, put the grocery store there as well as affordable housing, finally follow through with the broken promise to replace the housing lost from the demolitions. Seems like a situation where everyone can win: developers can profit, the state and city have a new source of revenue, regular people have a more livable community. I don't hate the idea of the 78, you're right about the current park's design flaws, and it would be nice to finally do something with a huge site that has been vacant since the 70s. My opinion is that it's just kind of low-hanging fruit at the current site but I don't know what changes they could make to the current park to make it more 'imageable' without demolishing it and building again. Even something like orienting it north-northeast toward the skyline could go a long way which is probably impossible, I have no clue. Also no clue why they didn't just do that in the first place, the MLB preference is to face it northeast. Something to do with keeping the address at 35th and Shields I guess?

  29. The odds are near 100% that a significant amount of those guys will fail, and fail hard, very similar to last year. They all are so young, and development isn't certain, nor linear.

  31. Really, the owners signed and developed that poor offense? Decided to make crochet a starter? There were substantial changes in the organization if you prefer to stick to the narrative of "no matter what changes are made, the Sox won't win until there is a new owner" enjoy yourself. I know you won't change the narrative and give new people a chance. Personally, i just understand that reasoning.

  32. They aren't new titles. They are new positions and a new organizational structure to bring the team at least into this century. I understand why people don't want to believe that it will work. What I don't understand is why people automatically default to it's the white sox so it won't work.

  33. I literally just wanted to hear why he thought this team is better than last years team since he didn’t elaborate in his original post. I don’t need to argue with anyone here, in fact I find it kinda of dumb at this point in my life we’re all here because we’re all Sox fans so it’s kind of funny how much a lot of people here hate each other.

  34. That's one way to look at it. I just disagree. I'll give the new regime a chance.

  35. Until JR is no longer calling the shots all these "changes" are simply rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Like my dad used to say, "The Sox would screw up a two-car funeral." Sooner or later these new individuals are going to find out the hard way that JR isn't going to fundamentally change his philosophy on how a baseball team should be run especially when it comes to paying for talent. The only hope is that new ownership will arrive sooner rather than later. In that case maybe they keep some of the new hirings and give them a realistic chance to do what they will.

  36. But then he hired multiple people from outside the organization and created a director of pitching position and a director of hitting position to try to create more organizational consistency. None of this is the old White Sox way.
    1 point
  37. So having the same owner but an entirely different organizational structure is exactly the same as before? This is the definition of choosing to be negative and not giving the new people and structure and chance. Again, everyone is allowed to think and believe what they want. I just don't understand the always choosing the negative.
    1 point
  38. I understand that, but he was saying the Sox making changes all of the time. Which, isn't true. They very rarely make changes. And, at least with this change it does seem like some larger organizational things are happening. Whether or not they are for the better remains to be seen.

  39. We have? I always thought the argument was that Jerry is too loyal and never changes anything.

  40. This is wrong as it's a new front office and they've created new positions and a structure that they've never had before. No one knows if it will work but there isn't information to make a decision either way.

  41. I disagree with pretty much all of this. No one is taking the extreme and having blind faith. Objectivity means taking a look at all sides. Not just sticking to one view all the time. This may be a foreign concepts to many. All I said is I don't understand the negativity of not giving someone a chance. I didn't take a side or agree with anyone. I didn't say are going to win the world series and we should all believe they will do well.

  42. Easier, still, to pretend that a 3rd party is controlling their own actions, a team owner forces them to dump on any comment, like a slap in the face, over and over. It's always weird how those who get mad for being called out for constant negativity don't accept that a bad team owner has made the generally positive person push back on them. Bad owners are only to blame for their own aggressive actions.

  43. Being negative and wallowing sells. People would rather complain and moan instead of look for hope. Society today.
