  1. I mean two things can be true at the same time. Jerry Reindsdorf is embarrassingly cheap AND this is a bad contract.

  2. Caleb in my opinion is clearly the guy and also still has a bunch of work to do which should be the norm given he’s a 2nd year qb working his 1st year with a new coach. I Feel like there’s so many wild opinions on him out there either way but the reality is he’s solid already with a lot of things he needs to get better at and has a lot of room to improve in with his talent.

  3. Thanks! I guess it makes all their expenses worth it. 🤣 That’s a good point about “corporate sports BS”. I have never considered the Sox to be that, just cuz they are my local team. But you are right. BTW, I’d believe in the Sox more if you submitted your resume to Jerry, à la @WBWSF. I’d have more faith in you than Getz as GM. Please write a letter, but you will have to beat out @WBWSF first. You will need a better strategy than non-stop free agency spending. 😉

  5. And yet they STILL managed to trail Cleveland by 28 games this year.

  6. When you are a combined 122 games under .500 for 2 seasons, mediocre is a large improvement.

  7. LOL. No you wouldn't. You're not happy when they win. My point stands. 29 teams don't run 3 All-Stars out there with 2 more on the bench. The Sox are in a rebuild. They will get better, regardless of when Ishbia takes over.

  8. I am still in disbelief that the running game was as good as it was today against that defensive front. This offensive line is no joke right now, and don’t look now but Trapilo is playing more than a merely competent LT

  9. Congratulations to the Chicago Bears...a statement win and it guarantees their first winning season since 2018. That's more progress than I could have hoped for this season.

  11. Would have been funnier with a doink. Sweet Bears win that was unexpected. It makes up for the cold game I sat in at Soldier Field where Fields was a fun watch but the Eagles coasted to the win.

  16. Merely to make a point to the other owners...not because he really wanted to keep him on the payroll long term.

  17. Very true. It's all in the eye of the beholder. If Cease performs up to his norm, Toronto makes the playoffs a few times during his deal, and (I assume) they'll reap the benefits vis a vis attendance, marketing and advertising money it won't be a bad deal at all.

  18. Youre easily one of my favorite posters. Your opinions are always spot on and you probably hold your tongue on a lot of the BS you read here. I'm too much of a Sox supporter to see Sox fans constantly trashing the team like this was a Cubs forum. While I don 't buy into the Sox /Cubs fans fighting I do acknowledge the animosity is there. I understand there's a lot to be critical of but the amount of butt hurt has far surpassed anything I thought grown men could cry about over a baseball team . It's like a custody battle , just irrational biases against something you once professed love for but will coming crawling back to eventually. Sox podcasters and national media are more fair. I just saw a Baseball America Podcast with JJ Cooper & Geoff Pontes pontificating over the state of the Sox rebuild. And while they arent sure who will be part of the core they they were as fair as possible on seeing the youngsters flaws and what could derail or propel them forward. Funny thing was I dont think they mentioned the Ishbia's coming ownership which is perhaps the biggest reason to think the Sox finally could have an owner willing to play with the big boys. Jj Cooper thought Getz was really trying to modernize. If Getz can just keep the team developing prospects and pushing the win numbers forward for the next few years the Sox just might be in a position for Ishbia to come in with a flourish of spending to push the Sox from a near or slightly over . .500 team to a team that can win the division consistently. The fans from 20-50 years old may get to see a new stadium and a pretty good modern team that supports the farm and 26 man roster with equal gusto .

  19. It remains to be seen if this is a bad contract. If Toronto wins the WS next year with the help of Cease and then he's washed up during the last half of the contract, will it still be a bad contract?
    2 points
  20. Yep. As Sox fans, we've spent the last 20-30 years remarking at how certain free agent contracts have been terrible for that other team and that they're going to regret it. Meanwhile, the Sox have held the line at the $75M contract mark and have been one of the worst teams over the last 20 years in terms of making the playoffs and actually winning playoff games. I don't know about you guys, but I'm not going to pity these other franchises for their supposed stupidity, I'm going to ENVY them because we're stuck with the Sox organization's stupidity at how they do things.

  21. It's a lot of dough but the guy has never missed a start. Consider how much money 'elite' pitchers like DeGrom or Sale were paid to barely pitch any innings. With deferrals, Cease is being paid $26mil AAV. Boston gave Sale a 5-year contract, $29mil AAV, and he only pitched 151 innings for them in 4 years to a 3.93 ERA after signing the extension. Rangers extended DeGrom for 5 years, $37mil AAV, so far he's pitched 213 IP in 3 years. Burnes just signed for 6 years, $210mil ($35mil AAV) and now he's 31 and recovering from TJ. This contract reminds me of what the Yankees gave Rodón which is to say I think it's an overpay but he's still a valuable pitcher who will almost certainly perform across the life of the contract. I figured he would sign for 1 year and get a bigger deal depending on his performance. I'm sure a lot of other teams were offering him that. Anyway, congrats to him. It'll buy a lot of frisbee golf.

  22. I think it is time to think these Bears might be for real. They have been no where near full strength all year long, and yet are 9-3.

  23. I was very happy when they won in 2005 and have been accused in the past of setting the bar to low because to me just having a winning season (at least 82 wins) is a positive on the year. That's what JR has done to the fan base, just having a winning season is a reason to celebrate. And it wasn't always like this, there was a time when he had earned the benefit of the doubt. From 1981 through 2006 they had 16 winning years and most times were in contention for the division. Since 2007? One of the worst teams in baseball. My opinion or comments shouldn't impact you one iota. Trying to "ruin" it for everyone? Since when do you give a s#$% about what I say or my opinion? If what I say or write bothers you at this forum I'd submit the issue is on you. I'll tell you what bothers me, and it should bother you too, that this franchise is incompetent, dysfunctional and inept. A laughing stock. A few incremental improvements don't amount to much not when you consider how far behind they are even compared to teams in their own division. The standings don't lie. Getz is a joke passing himself off as a G.M. He sucked as a player, he sucked as the person in charge of the minor league system and he sucks as the G.M. He was hired because he kissed JR's rear end and from what I was told specifically undercut Hahn and Williams in order to get the job. (Not saying those two didn't deserve to be fired). But if you think he's doing a good job that's OK, you're entitled to your belief. And you having that belief doesn't ruin it for me even if I think that attitude is naive and fails to see reality. I respect you as a Sox fan though I will give you that.

  30. But their outfield was mediocre, same as the Sox! Nothing else matters!

  31. Again, you wouldn't. Maybe you'd be happy if a post-Reinsdorf White Sox won, but if this franchise won under JR, you'd still try to ruin it for everyone by whining about every single advancement like you do, now. You have a history, too.

  33. I was shocked at how easily we ran on them all game. If Ben had done that all game instead of trying to throw the ball in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, we probably win this game by 3 scores.

  34. I can't imagine what you would be like as an Eagles' message board poster. Two Super Bowls in the last four, including knocking off the "dynastic" Chiefs and quasi-GOAT Mahomes and yet they've resorted to loudly booing Hurts Sirianni Barkley from the very first failed offensive possession at home and leaving the stadium early in droves when down just two scores. When their team came into the game at 8-3 and still pretty much assured of a playoff spot now at 8-4 with just five games remaining. Remember when the White Sox were getting mock cheers for nearing the all-time loss record in late 2024 and Benintendi finally showed some fire and got pissed off at Sox fans? Fun times. Really can't imagine the shock value if those two franchises (Phils and Sox) had switched cities since the original Harper FA deal.

  35. I stand corrected. He is 27. I was looking at his age at his mlb debut. He is still a really damn good hitter with a couple years of control left. Hit lefties at 271 last year. 3.7 oWar over last 2 years. Not great defensively.

  39. Correct. That's why he had the clause in his deal about being one of the "top three" paid players in the game and why MLB removed him from the committee that advises the commissioner on all labor matters. They were really pissed. “The owner who’s railed the loudest and longest about curbing player salaries had just broken the bank. Randy Levine rushes into the hall where he sees Rob Manfred, who’s just heard the same news. “What the f***?” says Levine, and both men rush back to Levine’s office to call “Bud” Selig.” “Bud” have you heard the news? Levine asks. Selig has not. Levine fills him in, and there is silence on the other end of the line. “Thank You,” Selig says. “Selig is soon on a conference call with the game’s owners and one thing quickly becomes clear: Reinsdorf’s stunning decision has broken any remaining resistance to the deal they’d just rejected. Another vote will be held in six days. But first, Selig wants to talk to Reinsdorf, who has spent the day telling reporters that he’s just trying to win. “It doesn’t mean I like the system,” he tells every reporter who reaches him. And that’s what he tells Selig when the two speak later that day. “But Jerry, all you’ve done is preach about getting spending under control,” says Selig, who knows there is little reason to discuss this much further. What’s done is done, and Reinsdorf has done what every owner in baseball has ever done, whatever’s best for his team. Reinsdorf has one request for Selig. “Please don’t work the owners,” he asks. “Let’s go to Chicago and have an honest discussion.” But it’s not long after Reinsdorf walks into the O’Hare Hilton Ballroom on November 26 that he realizes Selig has the votes he needs to approve the deal. “I can’t believe he fucked me,” Reinsdorf mutters and he’s still muttering when the roll call reaches him. “No” he says, but only Cleveland, Kansas City and Oakland join him and the new labor deal is approved 26-4.” – From the book ‘The Game’ by Jon Pessah. Pg. 199-200. Published 2015.

  40. Yes it wasn't his best game but he does come through in the clutch and that counts for something. I'm firmly in the Caleb Williams camp, I know he will get better under our coach...

  41. He was pretty awful for 3 quarters. But when the Bears needed the conversions on the last 2 drives he got them. The Eagles make a lot of good QBs look bad. Love and Goff looked terrible against them too. Goff completed like 1/3 of his passes.

  43. It should be no surprise that any sort of projection has the White Sox as a below average team, including this ZIPS projection; no surprises there. But I have a couple problems. 1) There seems to be a real problem with the Colson Montgomery projection. The Sox Machine article described it as "laughably pessimistic", and I have to agree. I was listening to a podcast yesterday that was discussing Colson. It said that his defensive metrics were really, really good; his defensive numbers put him among the top 5 or 6 defensive shortstops in baseball. The podcast guys was saying that with little improvement of his offense, and he approaches 30 home runs, his War will be around 5. The guy went further and said that if he can improve his OBP (batting average and walks) and hit over 35 home runs, he could have a War of between 7 & 8. 2) Going on the stated premise that a 2.0 War is average, I have a real hard time accepting a projected War of 1.9 from our catching trio. I just can't believe that those three (baring injury) are going to accumulate numbers that put them below average, especially with what I expect from them offensively. That one also strikes me a "laughably pessimistic".

  46. No, the point is that many teams, even about a quarter of playoff teams, got crap production from their outfield. It's fun to pretend 29 teams are running 3 All-Stars out there and have two more sitting on the bench in order to crap on the White Sox. That's pure fantasy.

  47. At least Ishbia with the Suns has totally changed his modus operandi. He seemingly puts the fans first or at least speaks to their wants. JR has become more stubborn and entrenched in his bunker...scoring at the very idea of being in the Ohtani market while being totally blind to the marketing value of the Japanese players or likes of Bryce Harper. You have to spend money to make money. A cliche, sure, but truer words were never spoken.
