  1. Kudos for having guts not to use a contract not ending in a 5 or 0

  3. If we sign both those guys I'll be a happy camper. ... Regarding your post, nice that a guy who takes a 3 month vacation from the board is still remembered nuff to be quoted.

  4. Fired employee is disgruntled? No friggin' way. Regardless of whether she is telling the truth or not, waiting until she loses her job is going to be seen with a ton of skepticism as well as some who think shes awfully cowardly to see such injustices and not do a damn thing about it until she has nothing to lose.

  5. 13 months ago, in a distant bygone era, each league had a team in the playoffs with 87 or less wins.

  6. If theres a prospect for prospect type deal, it won't be a 3 for 1 where they get the better prospect. That just doesn't happen in the league.

  7. He actually said 75m more JUST to get their attention. It would take 100-125m more to actually sign them apparently lmao

  8. I refuse to accept that. If we don’t land a whale today, there may be no whale to land tomorrow. It’s really that simple. And knowing that fact and having a top farm system & practically zero payroll commitments, there is really no excuse not to make a baller offer to both these guys and make it as hard as possible for them to say no.

  9. Amazon’s HQ2 Spectacle Isn’t Just Shameful—It Should Be Illegal This whole thing really has the feel of an elaborate con. They went through this whole year-long process to conclude that they were just gonna end up opening regional branches in NYC and DC (Crystal City is, for all intents and purposes, DC) and after all that staged drama they were like "we weren't really that serious about doing this in the first place." In the meantime, all these suckers were throwing money at them and Amazon's got the data to know what they can take people for the next time. Now that the public is finally starting to wise up to the idea that subsidizing wealthy sports franchise owners isn't really a benefit to the city, regular businesses are getting in on the sham. People apparently didn't learn from the Foxconn debacle in Wisconsin but Jeff Bezos sure did.

  10. To be fair, he’s been pretty awful in high leverage situations during his Sox career according to fangraphs

  11. Personally I don't believe that projection/.Is it possible , yea sure it is. Probable ? I doubt it. Guess it all depends on how much he is willing to bet on himself rather than look at it pragmatically.

  12. He used to be a stud maybe he can be again. I wouldn't be terribly opposed to finding out though depending on the contract of course.

  13. Donaldson has had lower body injuries the last two years that really impacted his ability to hustle down the line. Just like with Machado, it would be quite interesting to see how Ricky gets along with him.

  14. I have a feeling Donladon will end up being the steal of this year’s class. I wouldn’t want to go more than 2 or 3 years max, but adding him & Harper alongside Jimenez completely changes the complexion of the offense. With some development from Moncada & a more consistent season from Abreu, we could actually have one of the better offenses in the league. Obviously the pitching would be a problem, but gamble on some higher variance guys to fill the remaining two holesand hope that the Rodon, Lopez, & Giolito trio takes a big step forward next year.

  15. Donaldson for sure. Steamer still thinks he’s a 5 WAR player. Getting him for 2/$40M could be an absolute steal IMO.

  16. I hate the idea of Yoan at 3rd. His best attribute at 2nd was his range up the middle. I don’t think his hands are soft enough to play 3rd. Also, I haven’t looked at the league stats but wouldn’t this make his offensive skills far less special when compared to other 3B?

  17. I'd target Donaldson Moustakas or Marwin Gonzales for 3rd whoever comes cheapest and with less years. Maybe even Jake Lamb.

  18. I never said Corbin. I mentioned guys like Happ or Wade Miley and have mentioned Pomeranz also. Plus adding other 1-4 year positional player contracts. Unlike you I don't think payroll will be hampered very much by these signings. There's a lot of room on the payroll and trading Abreu and non tendering Avi gets us $20M more. Plus you're completely ignoring the need to field a decent team next year for the new TV contract and the money it could bring. It might not be a team that gets in the playoffs or challenges Cleveland but it's a process that might give us 85 wins then the next year 90 and the year after that 95+ and in that time trade the FA's we signed to make room for the kids allowing payroll to drop while still having even more money from the TV deal. If you expect Moncada and Gio and Lopez to be good for 2021 then I surely can expect some progress from them next year along with a more durable Rodon who also could be traded when the time comes.

  19. Delmonico had a full season last year where he could have earned playing time if he stayed healthy, he didn't stay healthy and he didn't hit well when he was present. Last year we needed to give guys like him a chance. This year, I really don't want to block Palka, I want him as the main DH, and I want Narvaez getting most of the reps behind the plate, because those guys performed last year. If Delmonico happens to hit well enough off the bench or at AAA to earn another shot, great, but he had his chance last year.

  20. It's also possible that the floor could drop out from beneath some of the outfielders before the end of the offseason as happened to Moustakas last year. If someone like Brantley or McCutchen was available for the same money Garcia would get in arbitration, wouldn't we all go for that?

  22. "Balta," Since you seem to think every position has to field a better than average productive player, exactly who is going to comprise this "power house" Indian team's outfield, if Brantley doesn't return?

  23. Prof. Balta gives you a D on your offseason idea and bids you good day!

  24. He still makes me nervous to let go, though I don't want to keep him particularly. Still a bundle of talent that couldn't put it together, fantastic arm, great exit velocity numbers when he hits it, spurts of power, but just never able to put it together. It reminds me a bit of smoak, who was who he was until suddenly at age 30 he became pretty good. That said, I don't feel like waiting around for Avi anymore.

  25. And this is why not getting Martes in July blows. When it is known a player is getting cut if their current team can't trade them they just get cut. Why risk anything from the other 29 teams' perspective?

  26. With Harper, the Sox could be competitive this season, if they added 2 starters and one dominant reliever. If they also added Donaldson, or Lowrie, they could very well give the Indians a run for their money. Then if and when Avi and, or Abreu are gone, they could consider another addition, or two, for 2020, depending upon how the prospects had progressed. What significant holes do you see in this roster?: 2ND. Moncada 3RD Lowrie RF Harper 1B Abreu LF Eloy DH Avi or Palka, depending upon who is healthy and producing C. Narvaez/Castillo SS Anderson CF Engel (That glove & speed are needed in CF, if Eloy and Harper are at the corners) Utility infielder Yolmer Sanchez Starters: Corbin, Rodon, Lopez, Giolito, ???? (Cease later in the year) Bullpen: Fry, Hamilton, Minaya, Bummer/Banuelos, Burdi, Jones, closer to be acquired

  27. I think K's are vastly overrated these days, but with that said, Moncada needs to put the ball in play more because of his speed. For the Adam Dunns of the world, it doesn't matter, but fast players waste their speed by k'ing.

  29. I think if the Phillies offered 10/350 and the Sox offered 10/400 he'd choose the Phillies. At 10/425 I think that is enough to choose the Sox, and even then I'm not 100% sure. It might take the $440 that you talked about to get to that point. If Boras got the Phillies to $375 I think that would be enough to choose them, unless the Sox were approaching $475 at that point. I think the Sox have to beat the next best by at least $75M to get them to sign.

  30. So if the Phillies offered Harper 10/350 and the Sox offered 10/440, he would say no to the Sox? That’s laughable.

  31. The Sox will have to outbid other teams by $100-125 million dollars for them to sign? That is a fricken joke dude. We have a top 3 farm system and play in Chicago. Regardless, these guys would probably play for a little league team if they bid 100m higher than the next bidder. I'm glad you aren't the GM.

  32. I understand that people and organizations are innocent I’ll proven guilty but we need to believe alleged victims when they come forward. Is that a tough balancing act? Absolutely but we need to be fair.

  34. Well, she just got fired. People say things to get noticed in today's wonderful age of social media and outrage culture. *IF* (and I'm not accusing her as such) she was just trying to blast her former bosses, calling them a racist would be a very good way to try and burry them with the way society is. Unfortunately, I rarely believe anything until more information comes out about it from multiple sources. It'll be interesting to see what ends up happening and if more people open their mouths about this situation from inside the organization.

  35. I’m going to add this right now, but signing one of Harper & Machado should be viewed as a must. I get there is truth to the “we can’t force these guys to sign with us” idea, but there are offers that can be made that would be very difficult to turn down. I really truly hope our front office & ownership will look to be aggressive with these guys from the get-go. Don’t slow play shit and let a team like the Yankees go “fuck it, I’ll play ball at that price”. We should come out to Bryce with a 10/$400M offer and say there it is bro. Let Boras know we’ll be making a similar offer to Machado in a couple weeks and if he bites then we are the fuck out. If this shit ain’t wrapped up by the Winter Meetings, we better be all-in on Machado by that point.

  38. The Chicago area draw in general to catholic schools in that area is probably 50% of what it was in your day. There is no option in Chicago other than catholic schools. There are still draws from the suburbs and even Indiana as it's a pretty good education and community for those schools but you need the money and willingness to get your kids there . Evergreen Community High School is getting more kids from EP but it's still kind of an after thought there. The investment in that education pays off when looking to go to college and how prepared they are.

  40. This isn't how PTSD works. People with PTSD don't (usually) go flipping out and murdering people, If anything they're more of a risk to self-harm (just like most people with mental illnesses). They'll have feelings of withdrawal, flashbacks, and so on, maybe try to deal with those feelings by numbing them with drugs and/or alcohol. This is what I meant when I said that's an actively harmful stereotype. Not to make things about me, but for example, just like this guy I used a machine gun in combat and had problems re-adjusting to normal life when I came back and at no point was I ever a danger to anyone. That's not the type of help I needed and that would've just made my issues worse.

  41. Really tired of people bringing up "PTSD" when a person who commits acts of violence is found to be a veteran. That's an actively harmful stereotype, not just to veterans but people suffering from PTSD (veterans and non-veterans).
