The rebuild has absolutely been a net positive in Year 2, you just have to look in the minors to see it. There are so many guys on the farm who have had great seasons, some expected, some unexpected. Eloy Jimenez looks poised to be a cornerstone franchise hitter, while Carlos Rodon and Michael Kopech look to be the makings of a formidable 1-2 rotation punch. Meanwhile, guys like Luis Gonzalez, Jimmy Lambert, Bernardo Flores, Bryce Bush, and several others have come out of nowhere to establish themselves as legitimate prospects, and other guys like Spencer Adams, Jordan Stephens, Jordan Guerrero, Alex Call, and others have continued to chug right along and show that they probably have futures as useful MLB players, and a few players like Dylan Cease and Dane Dunning (before he got hurt) have stepped up their game and went from high potential to a realistic expectation of meeting that potential.

I know what you're getting at, but it's also a big indicator of how useless BA is in today's game. By not walking and hitting for almost no power, Engel is still over .100 .090 OPS down from Moncada. Yikes. I don't care about a few great catches- dude is not long for MLB. Edit: Adam's OPS jumped a bit today, but the point remains the same.

He had a stretch where he basically abandoned the change (and curve) and was a two pitch pitcher. What is the point of this season if a guy like Lopez isn’t working on developing a third pitch? And for that reason alone, I’ve started to question Cooper for the first time in my fandom.

Lopez doesn't have unbelievable stuff. If he had a high spin rate on his fastball, he might be able to get away with more but his fastball plays down in velocity to hitters. He might be throwing 96-97, but it only looks like 92-93 to hitters. His secondary pitches are non-existent. I'm just not sure he's good enough to be anything more than a #5 or a long reliever. His stuff(or lack thereof) won't play in the bullpen.

They're probably not contending for sure until 2021 as is, so I don't know how you can say that. This wasn't going to be a short process, and the majority of the talent that the Sox have accumulated wont get here until late 2019-early 2020. The Sox probably won't be ready to rock and roll until 2021 as it stands. The Sox are a currently a 100 loss team, and that is with Rodon. If Moncada/Giolito or Lopez take a step forward next season and Eloy/Kopech come up full guns blazing that would probably only be enough to get them to 75-79 wins. 2020 is the best case scenario, with 2021 being the most likely. 2021 is Rodon's 3rd and final arbitration year. They'll be ready when his contract is up, but I don't know if they'll want to keep him around with his injury history. The bottom line is that he'd be a one year rental for a contending team, after that, they're probably getting the draft pick. If they want to hang on to him, they can be my guest, but I think the more prudent move is to trade him in 2019 for a haul, and use some of the players acquired to in a trade for a pitcher of similar stature under contract from 2021-2024 during the height of the window. The other rabbit hole is that they might not play in 2022.

If they're drafting a catcher in 2019 are you expecting their window to be like 2024? Catchers take forever to develop. The ones who have dynamite bats get moved away from that position a-la Harper, Schwarber, the others are given years to work with pitchers.

We will see. If they are in contention and Cease is dealing, and they need a starter, I would imagine he gets the call. If they are 40-75, that's a bit different. I agree with Keith Law, the extra year is not that big of deal for pitchers, although it does get to the point where it doesn't make sense to call them up. I really don't know of what big benefit they gain playing meaningless September games against a bunch of call ups anyway.

It's pretty obviously Rodon, Lopez, Giolito, Covey and Stephens for the first month. After April 20, Kopech joins and one of Covey/Stephens to the pen. I could see the Sox signing a veteran to a 1 year deal as well and just putting Covey in the pen (where he belongs) from the get go.

If the Sox were going to call Eloy up this season there's no reason it shouldn't have been done already. Dude had earned it by mid July. Kopech, I can make September make sense. He didn't really earn his callup until his last few starts, and keeping him in a groove and letting him build his innings and arm up for a 6 month season all seem reasonable to me.

I am sorry that the few times I have come on this site i have been negative concerning my beloved white Sox but no one wants any of the players on this team, bottom line, they are fundamentally horrible baseball players and unfortunately for us starving fans our baseball players.

You have to wonder if the coaches are beginning to lose their patience with Moncada's refusal to swing at close pitches, when he has 2 strikes.

Since 2006, the Sox have been in the top 10 in ERA once; top 15 4 times; bottom 15 9 times. It's not a matter of liking/hating. Is the job getting done or not? And how could someone with those results be some untouchable guru?

Do not call them up at this point. Would be an absolute waste. And I say this as someone who wanted them both up in July.

As much as it would be fun to see these kids up here in Chicago, this rebuild hasn't been a net positive in Year 2. F Fulmer sucks; Giolito is not a top of the rotation starter, and likely not a starter on a good team, Moncada shows signs, but is batting .220 and strikes out at an alarming rate....Lopez has fallen off after a strong start. Assuming Rodon finishes the season healthy, they have a huge off-season decision to make on him. If the White Sox go into next season with the same team, add a few stop gaps and plan on calling up a few of these young talents in mid-April, they may be better, but it's probably still a 90 loss team. It's probably fiscally sensible, yet frustrating, to not start the clock on any young players until needed. If the team isn't planning on spending this off-season (probably unlikely, but I wouldn't rule it out to kickstart this rebuild), next year will be the about seeing improvements from young talent.

You guys are also living and dying by UZR. He's also 6th in defensive range for shortstops and 11th in overall defensive rating for shortstops, per Fangraphs. Since a lot of that it skewed by his rough start, I think he already is a top 10 defensive shortstop.

The Bulls kept throwing Derrick centric lineups out there over and over, and then went to the 3 alpha experiment two years ago after they paid Jimmy the max. Agreed. When ownership said "Okay, we'll blow it up", they pretty much said "we buy this will be a multi-year rebuild". At this point, Rick has done exactly what he said he would do and the farm system progress with players moving up through the system indicates that, with some hiccups, this plan is working. This is what ownership bought. They expected this. We're at least two seasons from anyone considering putting Hahn on the hot seat.

Orrrrrr. Our front office can do their jobs and resign core guys while drafting and signing solid replacements for the defectors.
