In about 15 ABs it will either be wtf were they thinking claiming this guy, or buy out his arb years.7 points

The fact that there exists a group of White Sox fans who truly feel that Palka "proved" anything at the MLB level last season, REALLY proves what a disarray this team has been in at the big league level. The standards REALLY have dropped low.5 points

Lol the paranoia inside of sox fans at all times prevents them from really enjoying things. Gio was so bad last year people just can't believe what they've seen. Doubt comes in at the slightest sign of struggle. Gio is legit.2 points

I wrote about Reed for those interested: https://theloopsports.com/2019/07/09/white-sox-addition-of-a-j-reed-is-worthwhile-low-risk-gamble/2 points

FWIW, they appear to have a lot more talent to supplement than they did in 15-16.(or at the very least more evenly distributed talent) You can have bums but only a couple. There are probably going to be a lot fewer holes to fill with Melky Cabreras and Mat Latos's and James Shields's and JB Shucks and Jimmy Rollins's..you get the idea.2 points
-
AJ Reed is going to to fill the Yonder sized hole in all of our hearts. Interested how long it takes for us to never want to see him again. Palka lasted about 3 days.2 points

Swing and miss guys like Collins need regular ABs. You are just asking for a huge funk with limited playing time. Really, they should have seen the amount of LH pitchers they would be facing and kept Collins in AAA.2 points

What? Lol. I don't get this at all. I'd much rather these go to Yermin to see what he can do in the big leagues.2 points

Oh and btw give me one 6 WAR player like Sale over three 2 WAR players any day of the week.2 points
-
That's how it works for most teams. One or two guys make up the lions share of value.2 points
-
If you go by career WAR per first round pick over the last decade or so the White Sox aren't looking bad. Every team has first rounders who never amount to anything.2 points

McCann has an over .400 BABIP. Sorry, his numbers are going to go down a bit, especially catching. I don't know why so many want the team to extend him now when they already have control of him next season. Wait it out.2 points

“For all intensive purposes,” I think you should “borrow” him some forgiveness.2 points

I'm going to call him "Madrigal" who is with me?!2 points

You are deciding on whether or not to bring up Robert and Madrigal and all of a sudden you can see into the future and you know that the highest win total in the division next season from a non Sox team is 88. You also can see you added a decent RF, Cole or Bum, Hammels to a one year deal, and a bullpen arm during FA. Option 1- Call them both up before September 1 and add 7 wins to your season total next year (not WAR) due to development and them being ready for showtime opening day. Option 2- Bring them up after spring training and add 2 wins to your season total next year as they need a month to get adjusted and do not have the offseason to work on major league issues they have, like they can in option 1. Option 3- Bring them up mid April and lose two extra games next season. Which option would you take? Now these aren't true totals, but it very well could come down to when we call them up.1 point

Now that's a good post by Moan. I endorse that post.1 point

Like I said, it’s a shame Reed wasn’t cut or made available by the Astros last offseason before Hahn blew $9 million on Alonso. Could have given Reed a good number of at bats to sink or swim in a meaningless season.1 point

He was 240 when drafted by the Astros. He is currently listed at 275 but I found an article that said he lost 20 pounds coming into 2018 Spring Training. I’m thinking he is back closer to that 275 now. And yes, I was surprised to read about his defensive skills at 1B considering his size. Maybe that isn’t as accurate now at his current weight?1 point

I'm actually not sure why they like these short tours for the college players. Madrigal played 12 games in Kanny last year, I assume that's the play. Considering the whirlwind of moving, finding a place, meeting new teammates, meeting new coaches, I'd imagine it's better to just put him in the level you see him starting next year *if you think he is appropriate for that level.1 point

This is a good post. There are many that say it's a business decision . If you can get anything good then trade him and let Jose know if he wants to come back in 2020 the Sox will do all they can. I say this myself. It's the right decision. Of course that's an opinion without sentiment. Really though we all love the Sox so there is always sentiment involved being a fan moreso towards the players than anyone else. Abreu has been a model citizen, a leader and a mentor and not only that but he wants to stay with the Sox and perhaps be looked upon as a Sox Cuban Legend like Minnie MInoso and yeah maybe he wants Yoan to continue that tradition. All I know he is good for the team and a great White Sox but trading him still might be the right thing to do under the right conditions.1 point

Both did. https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/white-soxs-attempts-to-recruit-machado-may-have-backfired-as-alonso-jay-spoke-highly-of-san-diego/1 point

Just like every other decision this team makes in the next couple years, I don’t care what they do as long as they win 90+ in 2021. If Abreu can be a part of that, cool.1 point

As a fan of the laundry and not just the names on the back I'm thrilled. Sounds like a guy that will take a massive home team discount so we can pay other guys that are (frankly) better and younger. Everybody wins.1 point

but the advantage was more than just Theo and his brain. The advantage included the Red Sox having nearly limitless funds to spend on draft picks whose talent was well known by all but that other teams had to pass on for budgetary reasons.1 point

One important part of the trick now - even if some of the guys who come up struggle, a big difference between let's say Melky Cabrera in 2015 spending 2.5 months unable to hit a ball more than 150 feet until he magically found something that allowed him to hit the ball farther again and the worst case scenario for Madrigal - the guys coming up won't be paid $13 million for the privilege.1 point

Shouldn't we just release Beef? It's Collins/McCann time. No need for Beef at all.1 point

I'm not sure what to make of Burdi, because they were clearly taking a risk with that pick. But every team has two or three year spaces of nothing. Hell, the Astros whiffed completely on two straight number one picks, and the one they hit on was the underslot play. Everyone talks about how great Theo did drafting, but all he did was draft a no brainer and a bunch of below average outfielders. The Yanks have produced one decent 1st rounder since 2006 (Granted the 1 is Aaron Judged and he is more than decent) TA was an absolute win, Rodon has had unfortunate injury luck but was/is a solid major leaguer when healthy, Madrigal looks like he'll be a major leaguer. Chris Sale is a gd hall of famer. The Sox have problems, but first round picks isn't one, or at least not a huge one.1 point

I hate this idea. I much prefer competitive balance to the European model where only a few teams in each league take all of the top talent and there is no chance for most teams to ever win a title. While there obviously cities and franchises with advantages here, it is nothing like you see in Europe.1 point

Correlation is not causation, so while the things you listed may not correlate as youd think it does not mean that it doesnt cause certain players to have higher babips. For example, speed on it's own may not correlate but speed combined with higher exit velocities and higher line drive rates may be a cause higher babips. Individually the correlation may not exist because the majority of speed guys may not hit the ball with authority and the majority of guys who do make hard contact consistently might be power guys who dont have the speed to maximize their outputs. Typically if you combined speed, with quality contact and all field approach you get a higher BABIP.1 point

Yes, palka has a proven track record of being bad.1 point

Castillo should just be released. He is a cheater and a guy who has no future with the White Sox.1 point

Butler and Westbrook? Well that sounds like 2 guys who have a strong reputation of adapting their game to work with the people they're playing with.1 point
