I think the fun thing not included in this is that the Sox will hypothetical have contenders for ROY in Robert and Madrigal (if he were to win a GG and have single, have single digits strikeouts, and a .300+ average I could see voters falling in love with him) and a Cy Young contender in Giolito if he takes a step.

I'm in the boat that I just want to have a competitive team, consistently. That's what I watch for. I know a lot of people on here would MUCH rather have 1 World series win and no other playoff appearances, but for me, I'd prefer to have 10 years of playoffs and 0 WS wins. I love when this team is competitive and can follow along and watch the games with joy. I can do that with or without a WS.

Thanks Eloy. I would say fathom, caulfield should be the first posters deemed board Hall of Famers. I blocked southsider so I didn't notice he was gone. I'm no mod, but if anybody ever needed a vacation it was he. He was so mad all the time. But the poster of the decade is El Rockin. What can you say about El Rockin. He doesn't care what is up with the team. He loves all players and never appears to get mad at anything Sox team related. Also Harry Chappas is a smart man and his Brother Rice connection makes me his supporter.

Whether their logic is ridiculous or not, unfortunately, our team has given them every reason to think this way over the past 15 years.

Anderson has hit RHP a bit better than LHP though. Being a high average, low obp guy with good pop, I'd bat him 4th or 5th. Something the following vs RHP: Robert Moncada Jimenez Anderson Grandal Abreu Encarnacion Mazara Madrigal against lefties, move Abreu and Encarnacion up to 4/5 and insert Engel for Mazara

There are a few things to cover with the lineup that are really in Renteria's hands: 1) Leadoff hitter - Unless the Sox roll with Robert in the #1 hole from his debut, I don't think the Sox have a natural leadoff hitter. 2) Abreu - As SoxAce alluded to, Renteria will likely give Abreu the 3 hole whether he deserves it or not. Personally, I'll give him the #3 spot against lefties and #6 against righties. 3) Moncada - Renteria loved to get cute with him. Let's not do that anymore. Make no mistake, Renteria is going to piss us off this year. That said, we actually have an abundance of talent that makes it pretty hard for him to screw up the lineup. My rules for Renteria: 1 - Tim Anderson does not bat 1st or 2nd unless there is a lefty on the mound. If there is a lefty on the mound go crazy. 2 - Put Yoan Moncada in the #2 hole in permanent marker and just leave him there. This is with the thinking Abreu is handed the #3 spot. Moncada should be #2/#3 in the lineup. 3 - Do not hit Leury Garcia #1 ahead of superior hitters assuming he fills in for Robert/Madrigal and injured players. Put him 9th and feel good about it. I'd rather see Grandal, Moncada, TA, Madrigal or Robert lead off than Garcia.

After spending a lot of time analyzing the roster, schedule, and crunching the deeper advanced stats I've come to the logical, and imo, conservative conclusion that the Sox will win 108 games in the regular season. Let's get some!

My comment was from years of PTSD in the 2000s when we would go 4-14 every season against the Twins due to their ridiculous dome and cheap hits. Their lucky hitters slapped the shit out of us and I will always hate the Twins more than any other organization in baseball because of it.

The GM job is not easy. Most of us follow just one team very closely. We know who is on the 40 man roster and have strong opinions on players strengths and weaknesses. Even with that easy task of following one team...we don't all agree on very much. Rick and his staff need to track 30 teams and 1200+ players. It's easy for us to zero in on the names the national writers are tossing around like Keuchel and EE. When a name like Mazara comes out of the blue it's hopefully because RH and his staff have been searching for the RF answer. If Mazara bombs... the posters will all agree it was a dumb signing. If Mazara is the greatest thing since sliced bread it will be referred to as an obvious pickup. After player selection they can negotiate ridiculously expensive contracts & extensions that will also be criticized. I don't know why we have struggled for the years proceeding the rebuild...but I do know that I like where we are at currently. Obviously...I think RH is doing a very good job. Go Sox!

A stadium is a stadium. I'd rather not further entrench the idea that residents need to pay money to get a better stadium for some unknown reason. Sports, food and beer. This is Chicago, I don't need the stadium to be a culinary destination. We have plenty of those already.

I looked it up and the Sox came in 2nd place 8 times before the ALCS was implemented in '69. This includes the 1963-65 teams that won 94, 98, and 95 games. I wonder what would have happened if they implemented it at the start of the decade vs the end.

I hope JR realizes his mortality and pulls an Illitch. Not with FA spending, but retaining their own good players. Just my opinion, but the following players have a chance to be top 3-5 in baseball at their position: Moncada Robert Giolito Kopech If the Sox could find a way to keep them all for the majority of their careers, I can live with the back end of those contracts being bad and going down the Tigers path. If they all reach that height, if they kept just those 4 around I'd be happy. I'm also smart enough to know that if Giolito didn't go to school last winter and change things up, I would have looked like a moron as he washed out of baseball and became the biggest disappointment in awhile. I expect him to continue to get better now that he doesn't have to worry about mechanics anymore.

It's very likely to be THE decade. We have a tremendous core and plenty of money. Somewhere in this decade is probably when JR turns over the reins. I'm sure going out on top is part of the plan.

What about the 50 years that followed? We were close in 2006 but it is about time we go on a six year run of success. We are due.

Everytime I hear the "20's" I feel old. And yes it will be the best decade, but it's not hard to top the others.

Can't project much about the 2nd half of the decade right now. We can project a lot about the first 5 years though. Basically every important piece of this team is under control through at least 2023 and many under control beyond that. The next 5 years have a chance to provide multiple postseason appearances. We may very well see the winningest stretch of baseball for the Sox in this decade, but without that World Series title, the 2000s trump all. Let's hope we win a ring or 2 or 3 or 4 this decade.

I think everybody gets that W-L isn’t MORE important than other stats. That’s just beating the dead horse of “1st lesson on sabermetrics 101, 2008 edition.” But it certainly has its place, that’s for damn sure.

And while it's obvious that the guy doesn't know who Robert and Madrigal are, I still think there's a good chance that our 2020 team is actually good defensively. I wrote about this yesterday but in a nutshell, we have terrific defenders at the most important positions (with Anderson being the lone exception) and that should outweigh the bad defense at 1B and LF, even if Anderson doesn't improve at SS.

Sure, but more often that not, we’ve misjudged or not developed the talent we had in our organization before moving them elsewhere. It’s one thing KW was really good at in the mid to late 2000’s. Players like Quentin, Floyd, Danks, Ramirez, deAza, Eaton, Santos and Quintana that were undervalued by other organizations. Abreu would be the last one, as that was more a transaction pushed by KW and Paddy. The crazy thing is we might end up as #1-5 on Latin America talent as well because of Tatis, Ramirez, Abreu and Robert...but we’ve been terrible overall in that area and still don’t have even a solid operation in the Dominican after a decade. Every plus comes with a “well/and/but/asterisk.”

Moncada is a freaking stud. He'll hit a bunch. Not even close to his peak.

I really enjoy the idea of trading for Diaz and making him our closer.. I just think it would take Dunning (who was a top 70 prospect prior to TJ) to get a deal done and I wouldn't want to move him.. Collins + Rutherford sounds fine to me though. Though I'd imagine the Mets could get more elsewhere should they decide to move them. I find that uncertain since I don't think they are/or should be rebuilding.

His xwOBA of .362 is not far from his actual .367 OBP. His exit velocity was in the top 3% of the mlb, when he hits the ball he crushes it. Is he due for a bit of regression? Perhaps, but the underlying analytics back up what he has done. Plus, I expect Moncada to improve as he heads into his prime years.

Moncada breaks these models. He pulverizes baseballs. He when he makes contact, the balls are absolutely murdered. He's top 5 in baseball for EV on ground balls and top 10 overall.

As far as projections go, I think they're right in line. I definitely don't expect him to hit 300 again, but I would think he does better than a .330 BABIP.

That doesn't mean he "sucks." It means he's been average. He's also 24 and his latest ~300 PA's were really fucking good.

Imagine being a Twins fan right now. The Twins are smack in the middle of their window and are being equally as cheap as the Sox. Can't wait for that team to crash back to earth in 2020.
