I'd rather have Teel, Montgomery and Meidroth than a Mayo centered package with secondary pieces like Beavers that were being discussed anyway. Braden looks like he could develop into an absolute 5 tool beast while Teel looks close to can't miss. I don't think I'd trade either one of them straight up for Mayo. If they would have taken Fedde for him he'd probably be preferable to Vargas but that still remains to be seen in actuality.5 points

These Madrigal comps are fucking lazy. Nick’s one full minor league season was built around an insane 3.0% K rate and a good not great 8.3% BB rate. Chase’s BB rate was an insane 18.8% last year with a good not great K rate of 12.7%. I get neither hits for a ton of power, but Meidroth isn’t a tiny little b**** who is looking to slap the ball every single at-bat like Madrigal. Only at Soxtalk are we so butt hurt over selecting a no power 2B prospect with the 4th overall pick that any prospect who doesn’t hit for a ton of power is suddenly somehow a Madrigal clone.3 points

Over 1100 PA in the minors .425 OBP. Over 550 PA in AAA last year, about 4.4 years younger than average there, .437 OBP. Might want to give the kid a few minutes to acclimate to MLB. .337 would be a decent OBP on the Sox. Today he only got on base 2 of 3 times.Single and a walk RBI. Picked a strange game to say you can't see what he does. Solid if unspectacular fielder. Solid body says 5'10" 190. Wouldn't be surprised if he's shorter than that though. Can play 2nd ,SS and 3rd .Pretty useful guy. Wasn't Hank Aaron about the same size ?3 points

Shane Smith 4 innings 0 runs,3 hits, 1walk, 2K. ERA down to 3.38 after that disastrous 1st outing. He's got to be in the rotation.3 points

I don't know why these meme has taken off, but it is absurd. No one is going to be mad if a Sox player has a good year. Surprised, sure. Mad? That's just dumb.3 points

Honestly who cares about guys we ended up not trading for? We made our deals and got the guys we got. Way too early to do what ifs.3 points

They aren’t setting another loss record. I’m not worried about that at all.2 points

It wouldn't exactly be the craziest thing in the world for a former top prospect to figure it out at the age of 25. I get it. Odds are he doesn't amount to much, but to declare that it's impossible for him to improve is just wild.2 points

Man I really hope Vargas has a good year this year. I truly think it would make a few people here so mad.2 points

Sure Mayo has more trade value than either Vargas or Sosa; but it's not enough to attract top shelf pitching...perhaps a mid-rotation guy on a short contract in July. But he's not the profile that the Sox need to trade for anyway, so I don't care about him. I'll be very happy if one of either Vargas or Sosa turns into a real major league hitter.2 points

I think it matters a lot for Vargas after the shitshow he put on after swapping a dodgers uniform for the sox. That had to be a major mindfuck. A bad spring wouldn't have helped.2 points

hey soxtalk, so when are we running "the mile"? sounds like 8 minutes is the marker to beat. Or 10 if you're walking.2 points

You know damn well Meidroth has more power than little Nicky. From college to the minors. Give him alittle more credit than that.1 point

Some might say the Crochet trade was the biggest headline, but maybe the English-language papers in China have a specific editorial slant.1 point

I don't think there is a much of a chance. Taylor signed an MLB deal and Colas has an option, and the Sox obviously aren't big fans. I'd absolutely give Colas as much of a shot as possible in 2025, but I also wouldn't have signed more than 1 of Tauchman, Slater and Taylor.1 point

Biggest headline of another off season is related to concession items. That's when you know your team is really in dire straights at the turnstiles.1 point

.337 OBP would more than decent these days. League obp was .312 last year, compared to .337 twenty years ago1 point

Meidroth gunned down on the basepaths trying to go second to third on a FC... Still not seeing what he does besides walks and a few singles.1 point

I wouldn't be shocked to see Clevinger be the closer. Also, after starting 0-5, this team is 8-10-1 in spring; 6-6-1 in the last 13. Starting to get my hopes up they won't set a new loss record this year with these random bouts of competence, even in the spring1 point

Sure seems that way…although I expect Drury at 2B or DH instead of Taylor.1 point

Could he improve, yes. Has been been god awful in his 500 MLB at bats so far over 3 season, yes. Would I rather have Coby Mayo easily over Miguel Vargas, also yes.1 point

Mayo should be in the majors. No idea what the Orioles are doing - they apparently can't or don't want to use him in a deal to acquire pitching, so what's the point in letting him rot in AAA when he's already mastered that level, with a .919 OPS over 562 plate appearances? I'd definitely check in to see if you could grab him for a good deal, like a lower level pitching prospect and someone the Orioles like in AA or AAA that isn't on the top 100. They might still not want to do it, in which case... enjoy letting one of your top prospects rot in the minors!1 point

Some people meed to getp out this weekend on the trail with a good GPS watch (not apple without data), and actually try to run an eight min mile. It’s going to be a rude awakening.1 point

I am going Vaughn, Vargas and Robert. Fear Benitendi hand will sap power. The other vets will be traded before they reach ten with Sox.1 point

Are we that good? If we win 81 with a no name roster he's manager of the year for sure.1 point

It seems like Vargas and Sosa are doing everything their coaches have asked of them, and more. Mayo seems happy to go to the press with his "unhappiness" that he didn't get the red M&Ms taken out of his pre-game spread. And at this point, Jackson Holliday looks more like Nicky Lopez with orange traffic cones on his arms in the field. Coby Mayo looks like the active ingredient of sleeping on a cold garage slab set to music. Maybe one of these guys will play some major league ball before they're 30. Maybe they're already filming a "Spinal Tap" style documentary about this Orioles team.1 point

You guys convinced me to be slightly more optimistic on Burke, although I'm still advocating maximum overall pessimism where I can in the interests of public mental health1 point

I think the primary issue is that he doesn't have a position. He is basically a DH. Not much demand for a 23 year old DH. It really limits his value.1 point

You are hyping up 37 ST plate appearances each for Vargas and Sosa. You did this last year as well and we all saw what happened. Regardless, not one team in baseball is trading a Coby Mayo for a Colson Montgomery, Sosa, or Vargas, because of a tiny sample size of ST plate appearances. The larger sample size of actual meaningful MLB plate appearances tells a more reliable story. Miguel Vargas (age 25) — .586 OPS in 591 career MLB PA Lenny Sosa (age 25) — .604 OPS in 578 career MLB PA Coby Mayo (age 23) — .293 OPS in 46 career MLB PA I know which player I would pick out of those three in a split second, and I wouldn’t need to ask Ryan Fuller. He’d take Mayo too. But if Fuller is truly the solution, why didn’t Mayo have more success in his small sample size in the majors last season?1 point

Maybe one reason the Orioles won't trade these guys for elite pitching is that nobody wants them after multiple failures in MLB and spring training:1 point

In Burke's case, a guy issuing 5.5 walks and 2 HR per nine at AAA, usually doesn't have a lot of success at major league level one off season later1 point

An 8 min mile might be pretty good for an average human, for an MLB outfielder it's pathetic. I would argue it's way more aerobic than you're making it out to be, the guy couldn't get to first base without pulling up lame, I'm simply trying to make the point that looking good with your shirt off and being "in shape" are two very different things.1 point
-
For sure, the point of my post was if you saw me you'd think I was in shape, but if I was doing any taxing cardio stuff I would be gassed pretty quickly. Eloy looked the part, but his body couldn't handle the full rigors of a baseball season.1 point
