Verdugo is also a guy who has run himself out of multiple organizations. There's a reason he continues to beg for a job from teams. Immaturity, lack of hustle, and poor work ethic is not something this team really needs right now after they finally shed most of the Hahn era guys.5 points

They’ve done it with Bonemer and Fauske the last two years. Bonemer is a top 50 prospect in the sport. It’s how you get those guys. I just don’t look at the draft as slot amounts per round. I see it as, they have a certain total amount to spend and trying to get as much talent for that money as possible.3 points
-
That would likely require a battle in the CBA, and the players would probably not allow it.3 points
-
They haven’t really been “punting” but in order to go overslot without comp picks, the money has to come from somewhere. It doesn’t really but teams like having agreements in place so that they know how much they can spend throughout rest of draft.3 points

One thing I don't understand in this thread is people talking like "give Kelenic a chance," as if he hasn't gotten 1500 PA's over the past 4+ years. Why should he be treated differently than any other minor league add? A starters job? Guy should be lucky to be a 4th outfielder at this point. Fuller will fix him is becoming a pretty fun MEME though.3 points

I’m all for the signing too, but let’s not treat it more than it is. Minor league lottery ticket at a position of weakness. He’s got to show he is not 30% worse of a hitter than Dominic Fletcher before I start considering him for the majors.2 points

Put me officially down for believing that Pereira is far more likely to be a positive contributor next year than Kelenic. Beyond being a bit of a head case, it just feels like Kelenic’s physical tools have deteriorated some since his prospect glory days and he hasn’t really shown any signs of improvement with his swing & miss issues. I think people are excited because of the name and former prospect status, but I don’t really see much of a reason to believe. With Pereira, he’s made some small gains with his plate discipline in the upper minors and I feel like his combo of power and ability to walk could result in him being a productive three outcome type of hitter eventually. No guarantee there, but I do feel like his chances of being a solid 4th OF / short side platoon bat is fairly high and that’s far more optimistic than I feel about Kelenic right now.2 points

That clip is a little out of context, even though it was still a weird thing to say. He was basically saying that his kid passed away and it really affected his play. Again, weird thing to bring up but he wasn't like "Jean Segura, his kid died" end of statement.2 points

I think moving guys like Aldrin Batista and Mathias LaCombe to relief roles in advance of R5 makes sense. Smith, Schultz and McDougal are basically their only hope for awhile at top of rotation arms. They must stay in rotation.2 points
-
And if the Sox make him the nominal offer, they get the 2nd overall pick as well as their regular 1st rounder in next year's draft.2 points

I’m not saying they would but damn does the MLB do a good job of losing fan interest in the offseason1 point
-
I’m just not sure what the answer is in a non salary cap league. QO’s really affect the marketplace though. If they got rid of one thing, it should be not penalizing teams for signing players.1 point

The Oort cloud, sometimes called the Öpik–Oort cloud, is theorized to be a cloud of billions of icy planetesimals surrounding the Sun at distances ranging from 2,000 to 200,000 AU. Its existence was proposed in 1950 by the Dutch astronomer Jan Oort, in whose honor the idea was later named.1 point

MLB needs to do something to get their offseason going, some sort of incentive to signing free agents in the 1st week of FA, with lesser incentives as every week goes by and install a deadline for the players to sign by. I remember tuning into the winter meetings being so excited but has just been a big letdown for awhile now. MLB needs to do something to get the fans tuned in for the offseason.1 point

Kelenic stinks. I doubt the Sox are guaranteeing him anything, and if they are they're stupid. Don't mind taking the shot to see if they can "fix" him to be a positive contributor but I expect he'll either be in AAA or released to go play overseas by the start of the season.1 point
-
Should move him to the pen, switch him to a 4 seam/cutter pitcher (should be hitting 97 with 92/93 on the cutter out of the bullpen) and have him kill righties. He's always been a good bit better against righties than lefties.1 point

How about this for a thought. Typically the best path to being an effective major league starter, is to start games as much as possible. Are there exceptions? Sure. Are most starters brought to the majors as starters? Also yes.1 point

But you want to bring back Tauchman? Speaking of deterioration…1 point

That's the problem when ball players get out beyond "can just play one game at a time" and all that gibberish. Somebody had him on camera and probably asked him to comment on the signs. That's the thing he remembers about Segura. It would be weird if he knew about that struggle, and then only talked about his sunflower seed eating, or whatnot.1 point

Having said that, I'm not going to hold a dumb comment from when someone was young over their heads forever.1 point

Here's more of the full context. He does say "I felt horrible" but you are right, at the very minimum a super weird/cringy moment. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C0atKtqL5iV/?hl=en1 point

For sure. He'll be a top 100 prospect this year.1 point

I would throw Oppor into the top group for 2027. His stuff is such that, if it clicks in AA, he could come fast.1 point

I don’t really want Verdugo. Fine taking a flier on Kelenic due to age.1 point

No, which is why this discussion is pointless. The Sox will sign the top pick in the draft, regardless of who it is.1 point

Kelenic is on a minor league deal…give him playing time in Charlotte first and see if you can fix him there. If he performs well, then find him a spot on the major league roster. I don’t understand the desire to hand a guy who has been bad in the majors across multiple seasons and who was terrible in AAA a starting spot. Pereira is a different story because he actually was good in AAA and hasn’t had a lot of major league opportunities. With the lack of options, he should land a major league role to start the season, although I’d probably build the roster around him being a short side partner for Baldwin. As such, we should probably go sign a LH hitting corner OF to serve as competition and/or a placeholder until someone is deserving of this spot. If healthy, Tauchman is a perfect fit of what we need. It’s ok to have veteran stopgaps at a couple of spots.1 point
