And who plays RF?

Cheaper trade/FA option.

Worst case scenario you could go with Engel until the trade deadline so Robert has some legit defensive help.

LHH Savage is priority 1.

Top 4:

Robert, Moncada, Jimenez, Schwarber

OR

Robert, Conforto, Moncada, Jimenez

Not worth half that, but good for him and good for us as we didnt spend that money on broken goods

He earned that money almost based on his 2021 performance alone.  And we have no way of knowing about his medicals. Look what the SFG did last offseason, they were 3/3 on Gausman, DeSclafini and Alex Wood.  Faidi might be wrong on Carlos, but he has also been one of the brightest young GM’s in the game since taking the reigns in SF.

To summarize, pretty similar risk profile to Eeovaldi…similar dollars.  That said, a lot of those numbers were put up against the AL Central.

A lot of pitchers in the NL about to be exposed by DH, so it makes sense to try and sign guys that miss bats.

It's great for him, not worth it though as that injury risk knocks down his true value A LOT. If you knew you were getting a full healthy season of 2021 numbers then sure. There is a reason the Sox passed on a QO that was much cheaper and it aint bc we dont have the room.

Happy for Carlos he deserves generational wealth. I am also happy the White sox didn't just give this man 44 million and an opt out.

we all deserve generational wealth. Question is, does Carlos Rodon represent a baseball reason for that contract? Questionable. I would say he earned his position. Market is the key. Pitching is scarce.

Because either they had a handshake agreement not to offer it or because Rick Hahn hasn't figured out that a guy who is worth $44 million and paid $18 million has trade value while a guy who is paid $16 million and is worth $12 million does not.

Good for Carlos! Hope it works out for him in SF. We had already moved on and 44 million is a lot for an injury prone pitcher. Glad he went to the NL instead of the AL.

Can't believe anyone would give that much money to a guy whose damaged goods.

Disagree. You don't pay that bc you have intimate knowledge that he could break down in a playoff run next season so you know you don't want him and he isn't even worth a QO and you have a good idea other teams will see what you do.

No way in hell do you risk locking up a ton of money on that big of a risk.  If no one trades for him your fucked.  Better to do what he did and just stay away.

But Lynn isn’t exactly a non-zero risk at his age and weight/conditioning level.

Keuchel wasn’t supposed to be risky, either.

This is a pretty great signing by the Giants. Sure, there’s risk, but SF prints money with that ballpark and it is max 2 years.  The upside is a top 5 Cy Young guy.  I certainly would rather pay Carlos 22 mil than give 16 to Kimbrel, but that’s me.

Well he isn't getting 150 after last year from anyone, IMO and a player only opt out leaves with all the risk and none of the flexibility in case Colas is ready.

If they are gonna string us along, sign Schwarber.

Never underestimate Scott Boras. Never.

and Boras did exactly what he was going to do - get an opt out after 1, so if Rodon pitches 160-170 innings this year and is still that good, he hits the FA market again coming off 2 5+ WAR seasons and cashes in a 9 figure deal.

There aren't a whole lot of veteran pitchers who aren't damaged goods and even less coming of a pretty good year who gutted it out for his team despite the tired arm but uninjured arm.

Lots of people round here want to trade for Bassitt and look at his health record of the past 6 yrs. One guy here thinks Rodon was a terrible idea while thinking at the same time Kopech is going to be the Ace this year. Kopech will be treated the way Rodon should have been treated last year, 5 innings max and out of the game. They won't take a chance of him running out of gas for the playoffs if the Sox can make the playoffs I' guessing 100 innings for the season and whatever he has left saved for the post season .

Good luck Los . If the Sox don't make it to the World Series I hope San Fran does and you get to pitch in it and lead them to victory !

Yes I have Los down for 100 IP so they might have overpaid. Sometimes the local fans have better insights than somebody's superscouts. Wish him well.

Boy that's a lot of hand wringing over a late 2nd round pick.  If the Sox wanted to pay him 1yr/$18M they would have offered him the QO but they decided he wasn't worth the risk. They had to make that decision back in Nov and didn't have the luxury of hindsight.  Just because another team was willing to take a tremendous risk doesn't mean they made the wrong decision.
