It also is a ridiculous comment from Getz because it’s not like he signed these defensive upgrades to long-term deals.  Guys like Pillar, Maldonado and Dejong will be here for a season (at most).

Maldonado is probably here for 2 and you know that.

If I'm counting right, that means they need 3 40-man roster spots? Chavez, Pillar, Mendick.

Yep and 2 spots will likely open with 60-day IL stints for Foster and Martin.

Edit: I feel like Joe Barlow is likely a lock to make the team (unless he is terrible in the spring) so probably need to open a 4th spot.

Edit 2: Another spot opens up with Lambert getting DFA'd (out of options) in this scenario. That's fine as he's just a guy. There's your 3 openings.

What service does Sheets really provide for this team? Play against some tough RHPs? He's beyond bad.

You don't want to sign Paul "please pray to Jobu" Dejong to a long term deal?

Shuster will be starting in Charlotte and I doubt Berroa makes the club initially

I'm really hoping he is sent down or DFA'd, because beyond the 2 solid months in 2021 he parlayed into three years of MLB baseball, you can't carry a platoon only DH only  player with four bench spots. Especially one with an under .700 OPS with all but under 100 ABs with the platoon advantage.

Crochet concerns me more. It's not his fault he was misused in 2021 if he in fact was/is ever capable of starting. He has 13 short inning college starts since high school. The time to convert him was in 2021. Even if he beats the odds and successfully converts, he will start 20-25 games next year if all goes perfect, with his first full year as starter in 2026, his walk year.

If he is willing to sign an extension to stay here and work through a conversion, perhaps that might make sense. For the current team and time before the next legitimate competitive window, transitioning to a successful closer or set up role and being flipped or extended is what makes sense at this stage.

Theoretically it would be good to have a LH bat off the bench who can pinch hit for the catchers, DeJong, & Lopez late in games.  But Sheets isn’t even a good hitter against RHP at this point, so obviously a questionable fit.

if they're starting Crochet at AAA and using an option year on him, don't they get an additional year of service time if he's down for like 2 months?

I'm not positive. Crochet has 3.026 years of MLB and 3 options available per Fangraphs. He is eligible for arbitration every year from now on until he reaches 2.974 more years of MLB service time.

https://www.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/salary-arbitration

Quote

Once a player becomes eligible for salary arbitration, he is eligible each offseason (assuming he is tendered a contract) until he reaches six years of Major League service. At that point, the player becomes eligible for free agency.

I believe he needs 1.974 more years of service time before he can reject any assignment to the minors. He is guaranteed a full MLB contract from here on out (arbitration hearing or mutual agreement).

https://www.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/minor-league-options

Quote

Any player with fewer than five years of Major League service time and an option year remaining can be optioned to the Minor Leagues. Players with more than five years of service time must consent to being optioned.

Can he stay down 2024-2025 or 2024-2026 (covering his 2-3 remaining options), and continue to be arbitration eligible through 2029?  I'd like a definitive answer.

I would only agree to a conversion experiment if Crochet agrees to remain in the minors until he can at minimum pitch 120 + innings in MLB, so all of 2024 in Charlotte at minimum. Based on all comments to date, it doesn't appear they are entertaining a full season in Charlotte, only some short term stay until he can pitch 3-4+ innings at a time, which may never happen.

He's pitched over 25 total competitive innings (college, minors and MLB) once since 2019. None of this makes any sense to me.

  • 2018 63 2/3 IP (Tennessee)
  • 2019 65 IP (Tennessee)
  • 2020 9 1/3 IP (3 1/3 IP Tennessee, 6 IP White Sox)
  • 2021 54 1/3 IP (White Sox)
  • 2023 25 IP (AA 6 IP; AAA 6 1/3 IP, White Sox 12 2/3 IP)

Oh goodie, more spring fluff articles...

Have you SEEN the parking at Camelback! My god, you practically park at your seat! And the color of that grass in the outfield patio, it's like a shining emerald! Oh, and if you want to see actual good players, our AAAA shares the park with the world famous LA Dodgers! You can't beat that experience!

Yeah, but they all play good D.  He could’ve gotten guys for those prices that hit a little better, but who aren’t defensively solid.
this wasn’t the year to invest real $ in free agents, even if they could.  And if nothing else, and there probably isn’t much else, the Sox will have a first rate defensive team out there.

For those who get the N.Y. Times since the Athletic comes with it:

"Make no mistake, this is another rebuild, albeit without the attendant buzz. So with no hope to sell, the onus will be on the Sox to be competitive most nights. Good luck."
