Robert’s Future

As has been discussed it would make Getz look like a complete idiot if they don't pick up the option, but JR has hung his front office people out to dry in the past so who knows for sure what will happen.

They’ll pick up the option and try to trade him this winter. If there was any chance of not picking it up, they would’ve traded him in July. This whole thing isn’t this complicated.

Why try and trade him this winter? Does the possible return really make you better? So they can spend $12 million on someone else as a stop gap who isn't as good? I'm not saying that's not the plan. It was the point of my original post was to view it through the lens of why do you have to trade him. Why is he not part of the future moving forward even if its just two years?

Love the future sox work. Appreciate all you guys do.

Because it makes zero sense to pay a talented player $20M when you are going to be losing 100 games for those two years. Their value is greater being traded for assets than it is playing CF for the White Sox.

You think they lose 100 games the next two years? If thats the case why not trade anything thats not bolted down? At some point this team needs to start winning games. I honestly dont know why having someone contribute to that even if you lose them for nothing is not as viable an option as trying for a lottery pick in a trade.

I was speaking more in terms of a fully valuable Robert being traded last deadline or this past offseason for the 2025 and 2026 season.

Honestly, he should have been traded after 2023 when they decided to rebuild everything. Getting several high end assets that not only line up with your next contention window but are controllable for 6 years once they arrive is just way more valuable to a rebuilding team than keeping them.

Look at a team like the Angels, who just hang on to their superstar players or let them walk away getting nothing in return.

Since 2012 the Angels have had the best player in baseball 38% of the time (5 MVP's in 13 seasons) and they have exactly 1 playoff appearance where as a 98 win team they were swept by the 89 win Royals.

How entertained would you be if the Sox went 72-90 but Robert won the MVP? Like, yeah that's great, but that's a bad year to be a fan of the White Sox overall.

98-64: Trout MVP

74-88: Trout MVP

72-90: Trout MVP

77-85: Ohtani MVP

73-89: Ohtani MVP

Outside of 1 year over a decade ago, the Angels had 4 MVP's on some pretty bad teams. They got nothing for Ohtani, they won't get anything for Trout. And 6 of those seasons they had BOTH Trout and Ohtani.. crazy.

I think they'll lose around 100 games next season because with the upcoming labor situation JR is again going to tie Getz's hands financially.

As far as 2027 they may not even play 100 games.

I just don’t think Robert will be on the next really good Sox team. They just need to cash him in for something that might be

Respectfully, back on July 31st you still believed he would be traded and said you had no faith they would pick up that option. I would say its a little more complicated than you are leading on.

You really don't see any scenario at all where JR decides not to pick up the option?

I assumed that they wouldn’t pick up the option. Once they decided to not trade him, my opinion changed. They can’t and won’t lose him for nothing. I’d be stunned if they declined the option now and it’s a fireable offense if they did.

Firing JR?  He cares a lot more about saving $18 million.

At this point, how many season ticket holders wouldn’t renew based on the Robert decision? 25-50?

Sox could be better next year, It's been a long time since I thought that. Quero, Teel, Vargas, Colson, Sosa, Baldwin, and now Luis Robert, should all be better. No comment here on pitching forecasts.

Agreed.  Pitching will be the key.

Agreed.  The minute Robert wasn’t traded, I assume Getz had Jerry’s approval to sign off on picking up his 2026 team option, outside of an injury.  Otherwise, if you know you aren’t bringing Robert back next year, you simply take whatever scraps you can get for him.

Not exactly, there's something to be said for the team playing better and not wanting to ruin the chemistry by dumping Robert for nothing. The scenario also exists where he gets hurt (like right now) or he completely craters out the rest of the year and then picking up the option doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense.

If he finishes strong, then of course you pick up the option to either try to trade him again or you just want to keep him. You still face the possibility that he does not show very well the rest of the year and declining the option makes sense even if you didn't trade him at the deadline.

Yep....and he's continued to play well after the deadline so hopefully his value is rising a bit. They have very little salary on the books.

Pick up the option, try again to get something meaningful in the trade market by offering to contribute some cash, if there's no buyers, start him at CF again. I read somewhere Getz talked about being willing to spend some money next year. If they are going to start making even small increases to the budget, then we actually have a reasonable chance to be decent if Schultz looks more like last year in ST.

A couple decent signings plus Schultz and Braden at some point, with Robert still in center actually makes for an exciting team.

I agree with everything except the 100 loses next year. They will have enough talent within the organization to not lose 100.

Hopefully he can stay on the field the rest of the season

Going on the injured list for a hamstring.  He’s been mostly bad since August 2023 other than the one hot stretch this year and can never stay healthy.  I maintain a team would be nuts to give up real value for him.
