I almost can't believe people are asking if we should try to trade Covey. He is looking more and more like a future piece of the rebuild. A 26 year old solid starting pitcher is something we should develop and keep, not try to flip.

Anyone who posts here should know I'm still sky high on Moncada and Giolito, and after thinking about it further, I think the threshold of "they are what they are" is somewhere between 1200-1500 PA and 400-500 IP. Thinking that Moncada/Giolito will still figure it out, while acknowledging that they suck currently are two different and rational thoughts. My whole thing with Kopech is that I think he overthrows and might be better suited being similar to Aroldis Chapman than Verlander. I think there is a 50% chance he's a stud closer, a 30% chance that he's a complete bust and a 20% chance he's an ace. Both Moncada and Giolito are roughly 1/3 of the way to the IP/PA threshold. If they both get 2/3 of the way to the threshold and still suck that is the "get worried" point. The 1/2 point is the really concerned, but not worried quite yet point. I wouldn't get worried about Giolito never figuring it out until he gets to 380 MLB innings, because he's such a project and everyone knew that when he was traded here. I have said this multiple times and it bears repeating, If Giolito wasn't a major project he wouldn't have been available for Adam Eaton. I looked up where both guys are on experience and based on AB+BB Moncada is at 507 MLB PA, and Giolito is at 132 2/3 MLB IP. Both about roughly 1/3 of the maximum threshold, like I said earlier.

I think Lopez was just as if not more important to the Eaton trade at the time and I suspect he was the one that the Nats were sorriest to see go. I think both teams understood something was wrong with Gio.

The three major pieces in the December 2016 trades all look like crap right now, and I'm talking about Moncada/Kopech/Giolito. If none of those three make it, you can push back the rebuild at least until 2023 and you might as well have Hahn/KW/Hostetler/Director of pro scouting shitcanned. Start over and re-evaluate. This is what everyone was concerned about, including myself, that this front office can't identify talent. We all agreed that a rebuild was the correct course of action, but those who didn't trust this front office look like they might be right. How many players, who have major league experience, and didn't make a major swing/delivery overhaul, suddenly figured out how to hit/pitch after 1200 PA or 400 innings? The number is very few. At that point, what you see is what you get.

Cease might be passing Kopech...even though he's not Top 131 on the FG list. We seem to need multiple sport psychologists for GIolito, Kopech/Fulmer and Anderson/Moncada.

I was glad upon seeing that this was a well thought out post rather than a "move him to left field" or "abandon switch hitting" or "he's a bust". I think the current approach may not be ideal but he also is still struggling to get back into sync from the hamstring injury, apparently. I'd give it a little more time before I think about tweaking it, I guess is what I'm saying

Sure. Then there are those who light the world on fire early, and then MLB adjusts. A great example of that is taking a look at Ozzie Albies splits. He is OPSing on an Adam Engel level for the last month.

Yoan has the tools and is still learning how to use them. Some folks forget how raw he was and still is with limited professional experience. The best is still yet to come from Yoan.

I don't think he's stewing. He had plenty of great quotes over the offseason regarding where he stands in the organization. Paraphrasing here, but stuff along the lines of "Im going to work on my craft", "I dont mind playing in the minors because I'm not ready", and "If they do call me up, Ill be ready for it". I don't think he expects that it's his time yet, and any struggles he's having are most likely purely developmental rather than him being "bored". All this boredom nonsense is getting thrown around way too much with Kopech and Eloy. This is Eloy's first full season above A ball. Kopech is in the middle of his 2nd season above A ball. These guys simply aren't ready. Eloy's not bored, he's slumping like all hitters do. Now he needs to prove he can make the necessary adjustments in AA, get hot again, and crush his way into AAA. Kopech isn't bored, he's just too wild still and has a lot yet to prove in AAA. He absolutely has to stop walking people, and I highly doubt his wildness is caused by an underlying anger that he's still in Charlotte and not in Chicago. MK seems too mentally grounded to have a bother like that.

Not only would it be foolish for the Sox to flip Covey this soon, it would be equally foolish for a GM to buy in to this sample size. A trade for Covey now wouldn't get back anything CLOSE to the value it could get back if he continued his progression and is actually good now. And any GM willing to pay for that value on the assumption that he IS good now would be taking a big risk.

Humber never had the type of stuff/movement that Covey's showcasing right now....he got by mostly by guile and finesse, and was almost always in the low 90's and upper 80's. Nobody's going to value him as "the next Jose Quintana" until he has at least a 2 year track record of excellence. Kluber, for example (as mentioned), or Charlie Morton (although he's quite a bit older) would be examples of pitchers that suddenly elevated themselves from journeyman/pedestrian status into the upper echelon of the starting pitchers. Dallas Keuchel would be yet another. He's (now) arguably worth more than Avi Garcia was in the midst of his supposed breakout season last year, but the upside of trading him for prospects is far outweighed by the need for a pitcher like that for the 3-4-5 spots in the rotation (and maybe even 2, if he can sustain this over a couple more months.)

It would be foolish to flip Covey. The only players people want to flip are vets or contracts nearing their end.

Considering he's looking like he could be our version of Arrieta or Kluber, but his track record is so short, there's no sense in dealing Covey. He won't return nearly the value he could provide as a TOR starter in a trade right now, because no one would pay TOR starter value for him. So keep him and hope for the best.

This a great example of you never know. The Sox had seen something in Covey that nobody else did so they deserve some credit for sticking with him. IIRC, Arrieta was a late bloomer that didn't come around until the age of 27. This is why at laughed at a post or two I've seen about Stephens being 25 already. As if that's somehow old, lol.

Regardless, I think Caulfield deserves more credit. He is all over the place sometimes but he puts together long, well thought out posts pretty often. I think he is a very valuable poster to have. I always enjoy his posts late at night when nobody else is posting.
