But this just keeps speaking to how horrendous this org is. Benetti is growing in national prominence and his childhood dream was to be the White Sox announcer. Plenty of teams let their announcers split national duties with local broadcasts. Do you think the Knicks get upset about Mike Breen? Jon Miller did national work for a long time. But this dumpster fire organization probably tried to shortchange Benetti again, because we know that he said the contract negotiation was painful.12 points

I'll take this anyway I want. He was one of the best in the country, grew up a fan, and we had him and let him go. Its indicative of this franchise and the bad moves they make on and off the field. If you can't see that and try to minimize this as "just the announcer" then you are helping enable their behavior. They want fans to not care.10 points

I never thought anyone could be more sanctimonious and elitist than Bernstein, then he paired up with Holmes. Those two are must miss radio.9 points

JR: Laughs at the idea of signing Ohtani. Cubs: Were going to be serious players for Ohtani. Why are YOU a White Sox fan still?9 points

Letting a guy do national TV games and football games is not accommodating him, its the opposite, it is building your own brand stronger by having a well known broadcaster.8 points

I'll never understand people that didn't like Jason. He's the best around. Wasn't going to watch many games this year anyways so whatever but this doesn't help.8 points
-
Yikes, despite what some think, we have one of the best broadcasts. I think a lot of that was Steve's genious, but they played off eachother well...8 points

Bummer, especially to lose him to the Tigers. I know opinions are split on him but there's a reason he's been in such high demand for non-Sox events in recent years. He's really good at his job.7 points

Jason wasn't the reason I watched the Sox, but when he wasn't there, and it wasn't Kasper on the call, the downgrade was easy to notice. He did have a lot of fans.7 points

Like, we knew this was probably going to happen based on his national attention on ESPN and the fact we hadn't heard anything about an extension, so ok it was coming. But to the TIGERS. Come on, man. What a kick to the dick.7 points

He and Spiegel lost me when they put Clevinger's ex on the air and gave her a platform to make unsubstantiated claims about a public figure.6 points

I turn on the Score and immediately hear Holmes saying he won’t go to any Sox games next year now and Parkins say “Benetti is a better broadcaster than Robert is a CF”. The Robert one is possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.6 points

Here's why: “Jason Benetti’s deal with the Sox is up, the Sox hold the option for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He went to Fox to negotiate that deal with them after he was told to do it and then come back to the Sox and they’d work something out. Jason wanted to get the deal done with the Sox first and then go to Fox or ESPN or whoever. Turns out when he came back to the Sox and said that he needs 40 days off so he can do the Fox work he was told, ‘no, that’s not happening.’ So I don’t know what’s going to happen to him or Steve Stone.” This was what a source told me last November as part of a story I did on the state of the Sox. Incompetent, dysfunction and inept describe the organization from top to bottom.6 points

Man if only the Sox could have had a guy like that with national prominence! Maybe he could have started a tradition like singing the 7th inning stretch? My favorite critique of Jason is people calling him corny, as if Hawk Harrelson wasn't the corniest fucking soundboard in the entire game. He had an amazing home run call and before he declined, he could balance the cornball. Unfortunately, he had zero chemistry with Stone and the broadcast became "Hawkisms and the same stories about Yaz and Catfish while Steve Stone wallows in misery."6 points

Jason is one of the best broadcasters in the biz, period. I get that his Sox calls were sometimes cheesy and campy, but he was ours. If you don't like Jason, I beg of you to watch his national calls. He's really freaking good. Losing him always felt inevitable. But losing him to the Detroit fucking Tigers is the last straw. I had little interest in watching the Sox in 2024, and now I have zero reason. This one hurts, and losing him to a division rival instead of a full time national gig is salt in the wound. Jerry can't shuffle off this mortal coil soon enough.6 points

What I've learned is that people on this board want someone that just repeats their own thoughts back to them. They will hate the next announcer as soon as they do something like ask a question to their color commentator, use silence, dont' use silence, or any number of rules that this board has established.6 points

i havent felt like this about White Sox related matters since Kopech blew his arm out in his first year. I wasnt even a huge fan of Benetti, I think its more like understanding the Sox just dont give a s%*#, or are doing this on purpose to drive fans out like how Fisher did it. Although I knew that the Sox didnt care about the fans, I really just feel it right now. I really feel like im done.5 points

A little more modern, intelligent, understanding of stats, lack of obsession with TWTW? Yeah that all checks out.5 points

True story, it was 1975 and there were rumors that Harry Caray was going to move on after the season was over so after the last game I actually called the Ambassador East Hotel where Harry spent the season and asked the switchboard operator to connect me to Harry’s room and lo and behold he answered. We talked for 5 minutes and I told him how much Sox fans loved him we all hoped he stayed on. Bill Veeck bought the Sox that winter and he and Harry agreed on him staying with the Sox. Harry was as nice as could be and thanked me and appreciated the call. We all know he stayed on until 1982 when he had enough of JR and EE. BTW I also have a nice picture from 1979 at Comiskey that I took of Harry with my wife and son.5 points

I love how often we are talking about getting the players the board is screaming for 3 years after they would have been useful. It's like, nonstop.5 points

Will they have the new announcer introduced at SoxFest? Oh, they won't have the guts to have SoxFest this year again!! What a loser organization!!5 points

Congrats to everyone that thinks good play by play announcers grow off trees. Enjoy whatever bland random person is in the booth next.5 points

He was pissed off last year about his contract. He probably got lowballed again and had it. He's too busy for the Sox doing other stuff but not the Tigers? That's a cop out answer from the worst organization in sports. Everyone can be happy now when they have some wanker in the booth who's dead ass serious as the team loses 105 games!5 points

If Gordon Beckham is brought in I'm back to only opponent's broadcasts. Just like when Hawk was around.5 points

IMO, this is great news. Fun is great, but silly, goofy, fake, overly quirky, convincing everyone you’re the most “clever”—it all leads to disconnect and awkwardness and that gets old quick. Our broadcasts were unwatchable care of the team, and “unlistenable” because of this guy! We need someone real, identifiable and passionate to rebrand the Sox from the booth.5 points

Just heard from a source who said Benetti spoke with them yesterday to let them know he was leaving. Source said he left because of Brooks Boyer.4 points

Just to say this, there were times back in '20, '21 and '22 where I would have the Audio package to listen in to Sox games while walking my dog. I got pretty used to Kasper and DJ, but sometimes they'd give us access to a video stream that day and boy I immediately jumped over to Benetti and Stone because it was just a far better broadcast.4 points

There is zero reason to give money to the White Sox or Bulls while Jerry Reinsdorf remains in charge. Just absolutely terrible franchises. If Reinsdorf doesn't inherit the greatest basketball player of all time his franchises would have one title in almost 80 combined years of ownership.4 points

As they should. It's a fucking s%*# show. This is legitimately a AAA franchise that is somehow lucky enough to be in MLB.4 points

f*** JR, letting another future HOF announcer walk out the door feeling like s%*#. Watch Benetti earn his MLB stripes the next decade. Like every announcer he had people who didnt like him but by and large the MLB fan community seemed to enjoy his style. Give the man a real baseball team with actual excitement and I bet it gets even better. I'm with the guy who said if the Cubs sign Shohei I'm gonna watch more of their games. I dont even give a f*** anymore. Why even bother with this sorry ass franchise and blind stupid loyalty to it because of "reasons" when theres a serious franchise in the same city that's actually trying. f*** the White Sox.4 points

Why? It wasn’t a surprise. This was always part of the deal. terrible look, nationally known hometown guy going to a division rival who will have zero problem with his other responsibilities just garbage all around4 points

I cancelled mlb.tv after this season cause I just wouldn't watch enough rebuilding games for it to be worth it. Now I'm happier to have made that decision. Best of luck Jason. You rock!4 points

As long as they are serious, bring no levity at all, and hopefully are a former player, the meatballs will be happy.4 points

This guy was a huge White Sox fan. I can't imagine how much money he needed to make himself a Tigers fan instead. I thought unless he went Joe Buck and went national, he was in the booth for 30 years.4 points

To me, this is shocking. If it were to do the game of the week or something like that, it would be a different story. But while under contract to go to Detroit? C'mon man, there is some more White Sox dysfunction.4 points
-
Yeah, I don't know why Jason would bolt to Detroit. He loves the Sox. Loves Steve. Something had to piss him off. When he was just starting, I thought he was trying to do a 2 hour comedy bit in 20 minutes. But he grew on me. This is another Sox loss.4 points

They do have a point especially with Pedro. What a phony. This guy might be worse than Terry Bevington. They got rid of LaRussa, and didn't upgrade. It boggles my mind how anyone would consider KW or RH for a personnel position ever again.4 points
