  1. Get ready to call in Sgt. Friday because they aren't signing anybody worth a damn.

  5. I think one of the reasons for the attendance is because its affordable going to a White Sox game unlike the other 4 major teams in Chicago. I've noticed on Tuesday nights where they have food items for $5 that it's a tremendous success. I think there are more fans eating the food on the concourses than there are fans sitting in the stands. I've noticed that the team merchandise store usually has different discounts on the merchandise inside the stores on most homestands. The parking and food choices are wonderful. Its simply a nice way to spend a day at the ballpark without going broke. And it should be mentioned also that the stadium giveaways this year were great. I just got home from the game and this Comiskey Park radio is super.

  8. Those of us around long enough know that he's been a PR disaster almost from the get-go. He's been alienating fans since 1982 and his late partner Eddie Einhorn was just as bad if not worse. There was a brief respite in 2005 before the franchise has gone into the ditch over the last 18 or so years culminating in last year's all-time record loss total. Disgraceful.

  9. What JR has done to the White Sox franchise in his 44 years of ownership is despicable, it’s amazing that there are any Sox fans left at all because of this man, what’s more amazing is that the Sox will draw close to 1.5 million this season.

  10. Exactly. I know you have a job to do, but don't insult my intelligence either.

  11. This post along with WestEddys about Schriffen bragging over a solo home run that brings a score to 7-1 are both excellent points on why this guy is so annoying. You put off a lot of people when you are broadcasting to the fanbase like they are a bunch of idiots.

  13. This is like saying "what difference does it make to anyone if Martin Perez is pitching for the White Sox, or Garret Crochet? They both are pitchers who throw left handed." People are play-by-play announcers for a living, people are baseball players for a living. There are different levels of quality among them, which can often be the difference in them being great at their job, or...not so great.

  14. I think the problem with Schiff is that if you asked ChatGPT to create a White Sox PBP guy, John is what it would spit out. It's predictable, flawed, and overemphasizes things it shouldn't.

  16. What the final total with RISP? 0/11-12-13? At least Grant Taylor had has better results recently. And White Sox saved $250,000 letting J.Scholtens go to the Rays for two months. Surely that money will go right back into the FA spending pool...

  17. My point is that I wouldn't deem him qualified for the position in the first place, but the Sox have (allegedly) hitched their wagon to him for another year.

  20. I just think it's going to be a bigger fight and strike/lockout than you think. The players think short term as their careers are relatively short. Thevowners are playing the long game.

  22. Maybe purchasing more minority shares is just part and parcel of a typical private equity investment strategy. It's hard to guess what is going on though when so little has been disclosed. Nashville is still hoping to get an mlb team down there and maybe Ish-bye-a does as well. In addition to a minority stake in the WSox he already has a similar minority stake in the Nashville SC soccer franchise.

  24. Jerry's rent still capped at $1.5M/season. The City and State still pay $10M/year combined. And that doesn't include the (non-JR responsibility - he paid $1M) bonds to payoff the 'new bar and store'. And JR doesn't need to share any of the attendance revenue with the State/City.

  25. I doubt they did. He's who Tampa wanted to trade, so Okay. They're good buddies; they wouldn't steer him wrong. But it's time to cut your losses Getz. Actually the time was about a week after the trade. And Venable isn't helping either using him as a PH Re Lee in the OF, even if he can play it decently, does he have the bat for LF? And teams are going to be on Getz seeking Quero and to a lesser extent Lee. They'll start with Teel, knowing Getz won't trade him, but bargaining down to Quero. They'll offer their most appealing org guys.

  32. Sox down by 5 runs. Schriffen: “Do you give him the 3-0 green light here?” 🤣 So true about Stone needing to be engaged and pushed to do his job by a good partner. Otherwise, he will just coast. Seems like Jerry has given him a job for life and he knows it.

  33. What's really crazy is that John's story about being a D1 pitche before blowing out his arm is almost surely, 100% made up. Nobody that would have been at that level would be so ignorant about basic baseball. Nobody has ever really pressed him on it.

  34. Plenty of baseball announcers are boring. That in itself isn't a bad thing. Baseball is kind of a boring sport that requires a lot of time to fill. I have called football and basketball games going back to the early 90s, and get what it takes to fill dead time better than most, fully realizing that almost all of a baseball game is dead time. It isn't easy to figure out compelling stories to fill the time between downs on during a high school football game, let alone between every pitch of every MLB game for an entire baseball season. But I also realize that if you don't have the trust of your audience, you don't have an audience. There is a trust factor you establish with each listener to where they are giving up their time and looking to you to provide not only the details of a sporting event, but also a compelling reason to stay with you specifically for it, and not any of the other choices they might have. Hawk was who he was, but he was always honest. Jason was also who he was, but was a damned hard worker who also had a unique sense of humor. Neither one of them were willing to insult their audiences by telling them something that was obviously not true. Hell go back through the history of Sox announcers and there are some doozies, but all were fair. Could John figure this out? I am sure he could, but he also seems to realize that being real is probably what got the guy before him "fired" he might not be willing to try, and that's a shame.

  35. Being boring and going back to the well for the same tidbit about a player in every at-bat isn't a difference to be celebrated. The White Sox diverse employee pool is something I am very proud of my team for. That's one area I feel would be adequately considered if they were to move on from Schrif.

  37. The sac fly difference is that when it scores a runner you get credit for a sac fly in the box score and it doesn’t count as an at bat! Just like a sac bunt.

  38. Or calling 450 foot homers like they are wall-scrapers. 🤣 Amazing that Jerry was apparently concerned with how Benetti ate a Campfire Shake during the broadcast but he doesn’t care how clueless Schriffen makes himself look on a daily basis as long as he bows to the great Stone Pony. The guy made a joke about smoking a glizzy at both ends along with Bacon, a la “Lady and the Tramp”. WTF?!?

  41. Agreed on all accounts. Except Benetti still can't tell when a home run is being hit until it's in the stands. Depth perception issue or something. I think Schriff has "tools" but hasn't developed them at all. He makes me laugh sometimes in a cornball sort of way. I like some of his calls. I thought we were getting a guy with actual hands-on baseball knowledge though considering he was technically a pitcher on the Dartmouth team....but damn.

  42. He has this lilt to his voice, where his tone curves up then down, like he's trying to force the excitement, brag about a solo HR to break up a shutout, 7-1. He brings nothing to the broadcast. The facts and insight, any of us could read off of a sheet. Benetti has the voice, knowledge, can speak to the moment. He's corny, but I found him very listenable. Schriffen is none of that.

  43. He needs to leave and try to get an NBA gig somewhere. It’s obvious that basketball is his true love. When you are a true fan of a sport, you do your research on it. I guarantee you he would have no problem spitting facts left and right about the Knicks or Bulls. He just isn’t much of a baseball fan and has barely any Sox knowledge.
