The way this game played out forced some tough choices for SD. 2 runs is way too close to concede with their lesser pen arms who have been scuffling, but they also don't want to waste the top 3 when trailing. So they try to push King...and Sox take advantage.

I'll admit, I about gave up on Vargas last season. He seemed totally lost both at the plate and at 3rd. I love the kid now, and I think he has really taken to 3rd defensively as well. Glad to be wrong on that one so far.

I don't like Southside Samurai because it's generic and lazy. Like calling Tanner McDougal the "Lakefront Leprechaun". Or calling Noah Schultz the "Out-gettin' Kraut". But that's the world we live in. SS Samurai is safe, kids could remember it, generic. I think some people react dramatically to one's ethnicity being put in the spotlight. One time at a work Xmas party, I was telling a couple younger kids about how my parents would always point out the Ukrainians among us. There was a resentment that went back to the war, and who sided with Russia and who sided with Germany. Those 20-somethings looked like they wanted to run away, they were so nervous about any ethnicity being discussed around them.

Have been trying not to squash the optimism as I've been the positive one in in my real life circles, but this team still has no pitching outside of Schultz. Still not a believer in Burke/Martin/Fedde. Additionally, they're 24th in FIP and pitching WAR and 21st in wRC+. That's a 70 win team. They're fun, but they're not good. I think their position players, with Ant full-time and Teel back can get more in the top 12-14 range though! Think the pitching is actually worse than they've shown so far so could see them dropping there.
