  1. On August 1st we had a thread that asked "Is This Rock Bottom ? " On August 19th a thread told us "Michael Kopech called up . " Now 4 of our 5 starting pitchers are all key pieces to the rebuild . Can we honestly keep rooting for losses when these guys pitch ? We can't think we can get good pitching and lose enough to continue tanking can we ? Now next year Eloy will be here full time along with some young bullpen arms. Yes the position players are all still pretty much disasters Maybe Abreu , Anderson and Moncada will be here still . In Abreu's case who knows ? Right now we are a team full of DH's and utility players and guys on the cusp of being non tendered or jettisoned in some other fashion. So what's the plan moving forward this off season ? CF looks bleak in free agency and there's not much there for 3rd base either our 2 weakest positions. Machado is presumably a SS . He and Harper don't seem likely but there are still plenty of talented players out there. I think the key might be who is going to get a qualifying offer among the remaining free agents. Until the new CBA it's possible the owners keep the contracts offered to aging players low. If there is a lack of QO's then perhaps the Sox take a bigger plunge into free agency then we might otherwise think. The off season should be very very interesting. Is it worth it to try to give out smaller contracts to guys who can bridge the gap for another year or continue to search for diamonds in the rough? That didn't work out real well this season and I don't expect much help from anyone on Charlotte outside of relief pitchers, With so many holes offensively and defensively even good luck with trades or FA probably doesn't mean the playoffs next year. But with so many holes some have to be plugged right ? It's all not just going to happen overnight and relying on the 2020 free agent class could be a disaster if the Sox strike out there.

  2. Another solution would be for people to grow up and not say offensive things in the first place. Opinions are like assholes. If someone is over weight does it really need to be pointed out? Is it pointed out because one thinks they are smart? Is it pointed out to be mean? Is it pointed out because one feels they have to express their free speech? My point is that it's pointless. People wouldn't be so easily offended if others learned to shut up about things that don't concern them.

  3. At the end of the day, if in the 21st century you still are limited to the words in question and don't want to understand the bigger picture about what the impact is, the problem isn't everyone else, it is you not being willing to evolve and learn something new. Look at history, we learn and evolve. We do better.

  5. Thanks Captain Obvious. Players can also struggle at age 23 and be out of baseball within 3 years. This organization hasn't made the playoffs in a decade so there hasn't been much to like. I liked watching Sale and Q pitch every 5 days back in the day. Right now, I like looking at Eloy and Kopech highlights. I like the giant gold chain that they are passing around when a dude homers.

  6. Because at the age of 23, a now-great player also struggled and in some categories, Moncada is having a better year at 23 than that now-great player did at 23. That’s why it’s relevant.

  7. I'm sorry. But if someone says the person in the presidency is only there because of racism, than that is BS. If you believe it is not, than you are a partisan hack. I didn't bring politics into this, he did. And what he said is absolute ignorance.

  8. Great outing by Gio. Nice of the Sox to give me a win on my birthday...always a welcomed present.

  9. Crystal ball over here eh. Good news everybody, moncada has a zero percent chance of still being bad in 3 years cause this guy knows things
    1 point
  10. That’s very true, but acting like Moncada has been so bad that he could be out of baseball within 3 years is still just woefully meatheaded analysis, and the type of talk that might be expected from an impatient 12 year old.

  11. Trump's cult lol.... So if you voted for him...you're in a cult? Geezus...idiocy like that is what got him elected in the first place. But glad we went off the rails here.

  13. You would hope so but this year he has more than doubled his plate appearances over last year and he has dropped from 32% to 34%. It seems to me that he has reduced his SO rate when they have got him out of the leadoff spot recently.

  17. There is so much irrelevant in this post. This is pretty much all excuses and enabling. Yes. We live in a society. As a group we decide what is ok and what is not. What it amounts to is that some feel like there should be no consequences for their actions. If you need to call someone a f@g to feel funny or smart, that is your right. But it is the rest of our right to see it for what it is. Don't cry because there are consequences for your actions.

  19. Well the Enquirer bought and killed a Trump Illegitimate Child with Housekeeper story in 2015, again presumably using money from the Trump organization that they would have illegally declared to be legal fees, and that agreement has crumbled.

  20. Assuming a BABIP of .300, if Moncada had a league average number of strikeouts (64 less) he would have probably 19 more hits. However, we all knew coming into his career that he was a higher strikeout hitter, so I would think a more realistic projection for what he was expected to do was that he should be somewhere in between where he is now and the league average....say at 145 strikeouts. So if he had 34 less strikeouts, assuming a BABIP of .300, he would have 9 more hits and would be hitting .237. So let’s just put this in perspective that because Yoan Moncada doesn’t have like NINE more hits his rookie year, some folks in this thread think he is totally garbage / a bust compared to being at least acceptable or very good. Right?

  21. It isn't evolving and there are somethings I'm not willing to move from. Also at sometime someplace I am going to say something that is offensive to someone I've accepted that fact and I've been offended many times in the past as well. It's part of life. It's part of being an adult. It's part of having difficult conversations with people. It moves well beyond just words as well. I find that people anymore are unwilling to expose themselves to ideas they deem personally offensive and consider that they maybe wrong. That once again is not evolution. It's actually a big part of what is tearing the USA apart.

  22. I understand that Ks are worse than other putouts in that you don’t put the ball in play, and thus don’t have the opportunity for a productive out or to run up some insanely good BABIP swing, but I think strikeouts are severely overrated. It’s another out and not all strikeouts are equal. I mean, does it really matter if you lead off an inning striking out or weakly grounding to the pitcher? Does it matter if you hit a sky high infield fly vs striking out with runners on first and second?

  29. We should be, but we're not. We had people in this country who hated Obama not because of his politics, but because of the color of his skin. Look no further than the man occupying the Oval Office. He's only there because of racism. He played that card, as did Reagan. Racism is part of US identity, until we start having really harsh penalties for it. Like ostracism. Make someone who believes crazy shit like that isolated and destitute. There are still people who won't let me in their fucking workplace because they believe that the Sandy Hook shooter was autistic and that autistic people are inherently violent, when the science says the opposite is true. People will believe anything they say on TV and don't use their critical thinking skills. If there is one thing I appreciate the most about how I was raised it was the belief that you should question everything. However, that didn't work too well when I questioned my folks about why I should do things. Most of the time I got "that is what is socially acceptable so just do it" hahaha

  30. Ha ha. This is like 50% of all Sox seasons since I was a kid. They start out awful. Totally lost season. Then, just as you start to take solace in their draft position, they play .500 for the last two months of the season. There's a reason they've only had the #1 pick once. For comparison, Houston had it in back to back years during their rebuild. Of course, if the Sox don't start to even consider high school hitters, it's not going to matter where they pick.

  31. I think the political landscape is shifting as the population is aging but lots of young families are moving in so maybe that’s why they voted for Clinton. I’m surprised more people here aren’t in the district, but if they are they should vote Casten. This is definitely a winnable seat. I’m canvassing for him tomorrow, we will see how it goes. I’ll just remember the talking points and to keep my cool with those who don’t agree. I would agree that phone banks from home would be effective and I’ll mention it to them tomorrow.

  36. First of all, Albies turns 22 in January. You must be thinking it's 2017 still. Second, you were just ripping on Moncada for showing no improvement from last year and yet your guy Albies has a lower wRC+ than last season and is trending way down as this season progresses. I guess as long as he stays above a 100 wRC+ for the season you won't be concerned. That's fine, I will check in again in another month to see where he's at. Also, it's hard to take a guy serious that throws out a hypothetical trade proposal of Moncada + Kopech for Gleyber Torres earlier in this thread.

  37. Nolan Gorman is 18 years old and only a level below Madrigal. Gorman may be in the Show long before his 21st birthday. I would take him in a hearbeat over Madrigal right now but that ship has sailed. Albies is 20 years old and two years younger than Moncada lol! In what world is a wRC+ of 107 bad? Have you seen Moncada's wRC+?
    1 point
  38. Yea, I don't get it. Only shortstops younger than TA with a higher fWAR this season are Lindor, Turner, and Pereza. TA's 2.0 fWAR ranks just a tick below the median value of all qualified shortstops this season. He's already an MLB average regular at shortstop but, with his age and rawness, the upside is a top 10 guy at the position within the next couple years.

  40. I thought you were the guy that loved the long ball and didn't care about strikeout rate? e.g., Nolan Gorman By the way, your guy Albies is dropping like a rock since his hot start. Down to 107 wRC+ for the season and dropping FAST. 576 OPS in August. That must be concerning.

  42. https://deadspin.com/white-sox-prospect-yoan-moncada-eats-up-to-85-twinkies-1793613366 Just found out about this article from Spring of 17. The guy was eating 85 twinkies a week as a multi-multi millionaire professional athlete? I understand that he was a young man just arriving in a new country, but he is far far from your average "joe" and has financial priviledges that most of us will never come close to having. That kind of behavior should have set off some alarms and served as a red flag about the kid's work ethic. Also, the quotes from Keith Law about Moncada's hit tool have been very accurate some 18 months later. Moncada has to learn how to adjust his hitting approach and cut down his K rate. His 2018 has been worse than his 2017 and that is very alarming.

  43. I'll disagree with you on this. IMHO, the best thing that could happen for this kid is for this stupid FO to have an excuse to send him down. I think that a long-lasting, but not career-threatening injury in Spring Training, followed by a few weeks of riding busses would be the best way to get the lad's attention. I thought it in July of '17, & I'm convinced of it now: Moncada was stupidly rushed, & his development was harmed. He can still turn it around, but his sub-.700 OPS, despite being on track for 20 HR shows how screwed up he is at the plate, & how these coaches are not helping him.
    1 point
  44. Best thing that can happen for this kid now is to get lost in the Kopech hype and then get lost in the Eloy hype when it happens. Ricky installing him as the leadoff hitter was a mistake in hindsight, a big one. Kid's had a bullseye on his back all year and he's obviously not mature enough to handle it yet. That's something the manager, especially one annointed a "latin whisperer" should recognize IMO. It's the same BS we saw when Robin anointed Eaton. Stop crowning these guys in spring fucking training. The managers we've had in Chicago since Ozzie left have been absolute dog shit and it's not doing the players any favors. We need a fire and brimstone type imo. Girardi would be perfect for a guy like Yoan imo. Has the gravitas to make him work and not in a father figure role but as his boss and leader.
