  1. How do we get Renteria implicated in this?

  2. So that is basically a lifetime ban. Can't see them getting a managerial or GM position with another team.

  3. I wish Nova the best. When I heard that he offered young Hispanic players like Lopez money to do interviews in English so that they would try to get more comfortable speaking a second language, I appreciated him a lot more. He didn't have his best stuff anymore but he grinded out a lot of games and did his job.

  4. A lot of people voted for Trump. I’m not sure how that makes them all cheaters but okay... 🙄 Take your lame political message to a democratic message board.

  8. With the Athletic articles about Frank Thomas making #74 on their 100 greatest list, and another article by James Fegan on Paul Konerko, it got me taking a trip down memory lane to that magical 2005 season. Frank started only 28 games, but hit 12 HRs and drove in 26 for a nice little burst early in that season. Paulie hit 5 HRs that postseason, including first inning homers against the Angels, and the grand slam that won game 2 of the World Series. But the record that will never be matched or broken from that postseason at any point - regular or postseason - was the 4 complete game wins in a row by the Sox' starters in the ALCS against the Angels. Mark Buehrle started it off with a 9-inning gem against the Angels, holding them to 1 run on 5 hits. The Sox won it in the bottom of the ninth on the infamous dropped third strike to AJ, who was then pinch run for by Pablo Ozuna, who stole second, and scored on a Joe Crede double into the left field corner. Buehrle was set to come out for the 10th, but it wasn't needed. Jon Garland was next up in Anaheim, because he hadn't been needed in the Boston series. He beat Jon Lackey 5-2, helped by a 2-run Konerko HR in the first. The Sox were up 5-0 when Garland gave up 2 in the 6th, but he finished out the game with a 4-hitter. Freddie Garcia was next up in Anaheim. Once again, Konerko came through with a HR in the first, this time a 3-run job, launching the Sox to an 8-2 win. The Angels managed 6 hits in this one. Jose Contreras, who had lost the opener 3-2 when he tried to start a double play instead of getting Kennedy at home plate, was not to be outdone. He actually fell behind 3-2 in the 5th, but the Sox rallied with 4 runs over the last 3 innings for a 6-3 win. The Angels managed 5 hits. Total - 4 consecutive complete game wins. Gave up 1, 2, 2, and 3 runs. 5, 4, 6, and 5 hits. Here was the Angels' hitting for the series (including game 1) - .177/.200/.266/.466. That's ridiculous!! It's quite clear that there will never again be 4 complete games in a row at any point in a season in baseball, much less the postseason against a team that won 95 games. Did the 2019 postseason have even a single complete game? Oh, and how about these innings totals for 2005 out of the Sox' starters. Buehle - 236.2 Garcia - 228 Garland - 221 Contreras - 204 The 2019 Sox didn't have anyone reach 200 innings. Nova 187, Lopez 184, Giolito 176. My memory of this is that Ozzie liked his starters to go 100 pitches each game that season, win or lose. It paid off well in the end.

  9. I'm sure once the whammy lands on Cora, peeved Red Sox fans will start pouring through yankee game video like they are editing for Tarantino 😂

  10. Some people say if you aren't cheating , you're not trying. I'll bet they all voted for Trump. I think i'll keep my self respect instead.

  11. This depends on the draft. What if it was the Carlos Correa and George Springer back to back first round picks?

  12. I believe that AJ Hinch is a better manager than Ricky Renteria. I do not believe that managers are that valuable and being the team that hired back in AJ Hinch would make me mad. I would be against doing this, but not to the point that I would stop cheering for the team or anything.

  14. They were missing that ace until this coming season, and they stole him from their main competition. Also, the Sawx are damn good if Sale is healthy. The AL is a gauntlet this year....there will be lots of quality teams. At least 3 in each division. The only teams in the AL that aren't trying to win are the Mariners, Royals, Tigers and Orioles. The Sox don't have anyone as good as Cole yet, and they don't have a bullpen as deep with good power arms as the Yankees have. Keuchel is the type of pitcher that the Yankees obliterate annually. He's your game two starter right now.

  15. These players trying to save face is hilarious. "This actually was more distracting than beneficial. I didn't even want to do it." Says guy who participated in 2+ years of blatant cheating that led to a World Series.

  20. Right.....its completely nothing. And Burger and Collins were top 10ish picks. Astros aren't losing any of those. The Astros, as situated, get the least negative impact of pretty much any org losing their 1st and 2nd rounders for 2 years. The likelihood of them finding 1 impact player with those picks were low.

  21. So to be clear, people saying this is harsh... Jake Burger, Zack Collins, Gavin Sheets, Alec Hansen, a year suspension for Hahn and Renteria, and $5M isn't worth a World Series

  23. I am from Chicago, live in Chicago and am a lifelong Packers fan. My grandparents were big Chicago Cardinals fans. They hated the Bears/Cubs and were all about the Sox and Cardinals. When the Cardinals left for St. Louis in 1960, my grandparents couldn't stomach rooting for them in another city but also still hated the Bears and couldn't root for them. My grandfather swore off pro-football but my grandma ended up a Packers fan out of her hate for the Bears. There was a hardcore subset of Cardinals fans that eventually just picked another team to follow. So maybe the reasons are petty or stupid why she chose that team but growing up, I was close with my grandma and start watching games with her as a kid in the Don Majkowski days. Been my team ever since. If I am not a true Chicagoan because of that, then so be it.

  24. Anybody else on board with getting a legitimate MLB manager? I know the optics may be rough, but Hinch would manage circles around Ricky. What I'm not clear about is the punishment. Does he have to be employed for the suspension time to count? Or can we just hire him next year? Anybody else agree this is the way to go? It would be buying low on a good manager.

  26. Some of the publicized investigation notes have stated that Hinch knew and wasn't a fan of it, and broke the tv a few times because he didn't like it. Stating he didn't know is pure stupidity

  27. Nova was a good soldier. He was a guy alot of the young Sox pitchers complimented as a good mentor. If I'm not mistaken wasn't he the guy (or one of the guys) who had all the starters go to the bullpen to watch a teammate who was about to start the game throw? I wish him the best.

  28. I don’t hop on college pitchers trains until it’s clear they are good their last year because it’s too depressing to get @fathom updates when they start sucking. Preps are easier since we hear nothing about them once season starts.

  29. Would have a lot more respect if he simply accepted responsibility. The “buck stops here” as Harry Truman said. Now the culture seems to be more one of avoiding any responsibility and hoping it goes away because the attention span of the public and news media is so short.

  35. Lastly, for all arguing players should be punished (which I don't disagree with) it just wasn't going to happen. The MLBPA would have spent years fighting any punishments against players and the CBA was far too vague on this to cite a section with expected punishments. Baseball had hard times punishing players who beat their wives/SO before CBA policy change - just to put it into light how difficult it is to punish players.

  36. What you're missing is that the Astros have lost a substantial amount of FO employees over the past 1-2 years because of their success; many people who were near the top have been promoted and hired elsewhere. The Astros have lost a lot of people behind Luhnow, and the one guy they wanted to keep (similarly to Hahn and the Sox) was fired because he was a huge asshole as well. This teams cupboard is running dry, and the ship is now sailing with no captain. I wouldn't be shocked to see most others abandon ship as it was already running light in the first place. The Astros have so much talent I'm not sure it'll matter as much next year, but don't underrate the pressures of overcoming a cheating stigma on players as well.

  40. No need to apologize. I guess its better than nothing, but its not very much. At least make it hurt. No top 5 picks and no ITNL $ for three seasons, the max fine ($5M) and the suspensions is the least it should have been.

  41. I think the players not being suspended had to do with not wanting to bring the MLBPA into this.

  43. How bout the part of the report that Hinch protested the cheating, and went as far to damage the monitors Cora set up. Dude, you're the boss. Fire the guy.

  44. Hardly. Losing 4 draft picks when you're the worst pick in the draft, and then likely at least worst 5 picks in the draft is hardly a crippling an org. Suspending the GM and manager for a year is nothing. That hardly affect the on field performance at all. Disappointed in these "punishments".

  50. I'm surprised how many people here are saying Hinch and Luhnow are gone for good. They built an absolute juggernaut in Houston and revolutionized the way front offices approach baseball. MVP Machine is this generation's moneyball. Maybe they never get back to the top jobs, but I'd bet my neighbor's house that within three years, both are serving in some capacity for baseball teams. Luhnow in particular will be some BS "Special coordinator of the Minor Leagues" or something that allows him to overhaul a team that has fallen behind the times. EDIT: Ron already has a thread about Hinch replacing Ricky FFS
