I still think this is a placeholder hire to get by, a team sale will be coming within the next 24 months.

Just my opinion.

The new owners would want to bring in their people.

Which could make hiring someone from the outside harder if they thought a sale was imminent.

I can already see the boob tweet

"The White Sox are bringing on Dayton Moore as their President of Baseball Operations, who did a fabulous job building the Kansas City juggernaut, and promoting Chris Getz to GM. The team can't believe their luck getting a World Series Winner in Moore, calling it a  "game changer"

“We knew we weren’t going to be able to get anybody good. So let’s get this over with.”

Considering how much money he’s made he’s definitely not stupid, he’s just completely tone def and doesn’t either realize or care how much bad taste is in our mouths now and will remain with these 2 as the hires.

But is he Mos Def?

If true, I'm done being a Sox fan. Moore is not only an incompetent assclown, he's also a religious wackjob. His religious and political beliefs have no place in sports, let alone in a city like Chicago...

This would be such a JR thing to do.

Yes, please keep religion out of our crime-infested, degenerate, shithole city thankyouverymuch.

I'd turn around and say the exact opposite. If the White Sox hired good people, and had the organization pointed in a positive direction in a couple years, this would substantially increase its value in a sale, and new owners would be very likely to want to see things through with those people.

If the White Sox were to hire someone like Getz and Moore, well yeah, they're removed almost immediately if the team is sold, and this will probably hurt the team's value in any attempted sale.

I realize SOx fans b**** and moan by nature but I'll have to google Dayton Moore to see why he pooped on everyones parade

He won a World Series title (yay, he does get credit here, this came out of the Greinke deal, serious prospect development, some good trades, and an inventive bullpen use) but that was after a super long rebuild process even for KC (hired in 2006, made the playoffs in 2014), and after breaking that team apart post 2015, he spent the next 7 seasons with the Royals rebuilding and they have a bottom of the league system to show for it despite finishing at the bottom constantly and getting benefits like revenue sharing and extra draft picks.

He has also inappropriately allowed his religion to influence things in baseball, including holding an "anti-porn" seminar for his baseball team and very likely allowing it to influence his drafting and player selection, having a much higher fraction of his drafted and signed players seemingly be open and public Christians than could happen by chance alone. This may well have contributed to the extra long and failed rebuilds that cost him his job.

Adding in Getz to that, who would be coming from the White Sox's system, with a Royals background, and could be the only guy on Earth who might tolerate things being done with the same lack of professionalism and other problems that existed under Hahn and Williams, it does not look positive or hopeful on paper.

That's what I recall, too. Big Harper presentation at the UC (that leaked when it wasn't supposed to IIRC), Harper talked about wanting to play here, and then nothing until they apparently shifted focus to Machado, who was definitely worth going after but was the worse fit based on having Moncada to play third. My assumption at the time was the offer was so awful for Bryce that he said "don't even bother with another one", but that never sat right with me. If there was some internal drama and lack of alignment then that makes more sense why they seemed to shift gears out of nowhere. I'd guess Hahn wanted Harper and Kenny wanted Machado and they sabotaged each other.

Reading between the lines a little bit - at Soxfest that year, Rick Hahn bragged about adding "Multiple middle of the order hitters". That was only a week or so after Levine put out that the White Sox had offered Machado 7/$175, which actually got picked up and shared with a prepared graphic by the official MLB.com twitter before it was pulled down - likely because Machado's agent complained (he repeatedly complained about leaks, which gives you a target for who might have been leaking stuff).

My guess has always been they thought they could get Machado for $175 and Harper for $200 million, and that they were simply unwilling to go any higher on either of them than what was offered for Machado, so once that hit $300 million they just dropped out. A "$200 million" offer given to Boras wouldn't have garnered much interest from them no matter how much they liked the presentation.

I kinda wonder…did TLR like Luhnow? The guy drafted like all of the 2013 WS appearing cards in a single draft in 09. He certainly didn’t bring that philosophy to the diamondbacks, but after so much failure post-cards, I wonder what is in his ear on Astro personnel.

Getz actually did win a championship ring with the 2015 Royals.

Of course, that was his very first year with the organization, so hard to imagine he was all that influential in bringing that championship culture about, especially as they came so close in 2014 against Madison Bumgarner that it came down to the final inning of the final game.

I'm really glad I've been paying so little attention to the White Sox that this thread was where I found out that Hahn and KW were fired. That news alone would've given me hope. Coupled with this, however, it reset me back to my standard position of just waiting for JR to die or sell the team before having any enthusiasm again.

As I'm thinking about this, it's a pretty sad reflection on what this franchise has been that I spent more money on tickets and merch as a broke college student (which was around 2005) than I have as now, when I am far less broke. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this experience, right?

Would take a well-motivated Luhnow over just about anyone else.  Just don't see it actually happening.

You'd think he would have some interesting opinions...having been right in the middle of it all.

"Once you're with an organization for eight or nine years, you feel like you're a part of it forever, and I take a lot of what I learned over there and apply it over here," said Luhnow, who was hired Dec. 7. "Those relationships will be there with those individuals. It was a special time in my life, going through three World Series and winning two of them with the club, and it's something I hope we can replicate over here."

The series will also be the first against the Cards for Astros bench coach Joe Pettini, who came to Houston after longtime manager Tony La Russa retired last fall.

Luhnow was the Cardinals' director of player procurement when the Astros tabbed him to be their 12th general manager. He began working for the club in 2003, and he helped them acquire several impact players that played a part in St. Louis winning the World Series in 2011, including Jaime Garcia, Allen Craig, John Jay and Daniel Descalso.

One of the key philosophies Luhnow brought to Houston from St. Louis was an emphasis on data-based analysis and the use of technology in scouting and player evaluation. One of his first hires was director of decision sciences Sig Mejdal, who handled analytics for the Cards from 2005-11.

In eight years with the organization, Luhnow won eight rings -- five Minor League championships, an NL championship ring and two World Series rings. In fact, Luhnow said he will receive one of the two 2011 Minor League championship rings this weekend, but he'll have to wait until next month to receive the World Series ring.

"A lot of players from that team, I was involved in helping them get drafted or develop or in the trades that brought them over, so I have a connection to them," he said. "The team is obviously doing well. Our goal is to beat them once the games start. It's going to be fun to see all those guys at Minute Maid Park and say hello to all of them, and it's going to be a big test for our club to see where we are and play a team as good as the Cardinals are right now."

Here’s the catch: The White Sox have changed scouting directors, international directors and player development directors multiple times in the last 15 years. It’s not the personnel. This starts at the top, and whether that was Hahn, Williams, or – my guess – Reinsdorf could only be answered by people inside the organization. While the White Sox’s owner is already making noises about wanting to rob the taxpayer till yet again, he’s the most likely responsible party for the fossilized philosophy that has kept the White Sox stuck in neutral for the last 18 seasons. You can see this in the most public of all of his decisions, hiring his best friend to return to manage the team 35 years after his last stint on the South Side ended. Tony La Russa’s tenure showed him to be out of touch with the game as it’s played today, as his on-field decisions were bizarre from the beginning, while his longstanding difficulty working with developing players appeared to continue. Maybe Reinsdorf will take this as an opportunity to start over, hiring qualified people to run baseball operations and then allowing them to do so without his interference. Unfortunately for White Sox fans, we have about 40 years of data saying he won’t.

That's total bullshit that guys's a fucking idiot.  Kenny and Hahn both wanted Harper badly (maybe the only player they ever agreed on) but Hahn fucked it up when he thought it was a good idea to put his hero Boras and Reinsdorf in a room together to negotiate the deal. It took about 30 seconds for them to start screaming at each other and that was the end of that. They pivoted to Machado after it was obvious Reinsdorf was never going to sign Harper.

Harper and Machado were both firmly Reinsdorf’s fault. f*** that old asshole. Boras only deals with owners.

TLR convincing Jerry to sign Lunhow would possibly be the funniest outcome.

JR just cannot stop making the same fucking mistakes over and over.

He’s making it very easy to stop paying this team any attention.

That's part of the plan for selling and relocating. Sox fans won't support the team. Attendance will suck until they sell. No idea how much that would affect the bottom line to a buyer. JR and Co. are already way ahead.
