Rosenthal mentioned today the Sox are more likely to wait until the big boys sign

Which probably makes sense unless they get what they want from Baltimore, Arizona, Cincy etc. Something to note: JP Morosi has an obvious connection to Chris Getz from their Michigan backgrounds. He's broken some Getz news in past etc. Sox wanted that report out there yesterday for whatever reason.

I would be really surprised if they trade with the Orioles.  I just can't see that guy stepping up and making a deal happen.  He's way too much of a prospect humper to pay the price.

Yeah I definitely understand this sentiment but the guys the White Sox would get are absolutely blocked in Baltimore.

Getz is trying to pressure BAL and others to reach an agreement and prolly in exchange, Morosi will get to announce the trade.

Sure but those things always seem to find a way to work themselves out and he can always make smaller trades if he has to. Hey it could happen with the Orioles but if I were a betting man I'd put my money on the Dodgers.

Not sure why it would shock you. He's a disciplined, contact hitter with plus power that's an athletic, capable defender at 2B / OF who is highly  aggressive on the base paths.

I think the whole thing turns on his ability as a defender at 2B. You've suggested they think he is capable at 2B. If true, it's almost like they are getting a RH version of Michael Busch but with a better glove...very good bat except can actually play the position too unlike Busch.

Do you think Getz will be willing to come off Cowser and accept Hjerstad in his place? Or are they concerned about the latter's swing and possibility he may end up at 1B? I also feel with the Cowser thing they have a Robert trade in the back of their mind maybe in like a year or so and want an in house replacement.

IDK why Getz should make a deal now and not after the Japanese sp signs, why  the rush teams that will.swing and miss will overpay then

Cause if you a set a price and a team pays it, you take it.

Just make sure it's a good price.

Right, sometimes there are teams that want to make a move before someone else sets the market for them. Others may see these initial deals for pitchers (Severino 1/$13M, Reynaldo 3/$39M) and realize they're going to be priced out and need to get one of the best pitchers on the trade market.

The thing I struggle with on Cincy is they have a bunch of guys that have nice pedigrees but haven't lived up to it.

anyway here is baltimores top ten update from BA.

Joey Ortiz

Scouting Report: Ortiz has two true carrying tools to help him solidify his major league future: double-plus defensive traits and elite bat-to-ball skills. He’s a true shortstop with plus range, play-making ability and above-average throwing at the position. He is equally strong at second base, giving him another position where his defense can thrive at the highest level. Ortiz has advanced contact ability and rarely swings and misses, though some regression in his swing decisions in 2023 meant he wasn’t always swinging at pitches he could drive at good angles, even as he maintained consistent hard contact throughout the year. While he can be an average hitter with fringy power—or perhaps average at his peak—Ortiz’s defense means he’ll simply have to hit enough to justify a lineup spot and will still be plenty valuable to a team.

The Future: While he didn’t get much of an opportunity on the Orioles in 2023, Ortiz still has an everyday major league ceiling, though on a championship-caliber team he may be more of a utility player. He’ll be competing for a regular role in Baltimore in spring training.

Scouting Grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 50 | Fielding: 70 | Arm: 55.

Kjerstadt

Scouting Report: Kjerstad still has a unique swing with a high leg kick and a short stroke to the baseball, and he shows a knack for finding the barrel and hitting the ball hard at good angles. Kjerstad is advanced at formulating attack plans based on the pitcher he’s facing and proved adept at making contact on pitches in the zone, but he’s not a particularly stingy swinger, which could create challenges in the majors. However, his ability to put the bat on the ball could make him an average hitter with plus or better power. Kjerstad generates impressive carry off the bat and boasts power to all fields, often letting the location of the pitch determine where he drives it. While Kjerstad has worked some at first base to add versatility, his is a traditional corner outfield profile with a strong arm and decent athleticism but likely fringe-average overall defense.

The Future: After a long layoff, Kjerstad showed himself as a potential middle-of-the-order, everyday run producer that the Orioles drafted him to be during the pandemic. He could be poised for a significant role on the 2024 club as a bat-first corner outfielder who will continue to improve as he gains experience against high-level pitchers.

Scouting Grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 60 | Run: 45 | Fielding: 45 | Arm: 55.

I don't get wrapped up in all of the rumors and such, rather see final deals to comment.

What I do believe is teams will get more in the offseason for guys like Cease (controllable / good contracts) than at the trade deadline.

Teams mostly just ate portions or the entire contract for big names last July and didn't give up many solid prospects. This has been a trend for several years. The expanded playoffs not only put more TV money in owner pockets, but also gave them less of an incentive to "go for it" as any team with a pulse makes it.

I agree take a good deal now because these low payroll teams aren't a lock to even want to spend $8.5M plus more in the final arb year, not to mention also giving up the cost controlled prospects they covet.

Season ticket deposits are already in. Doubt Cease makes a big difference ticket wise anywhere unless he is part of a team's acquisition of 4-6 + quality players,

bummer. sorry.

Hall

Scouting Report: Hall pitches off an elite fastball from the left side. The pitch averaged 95.6 mph in the big leagues in 2023 and has routinely sat in the upper 90s over the last few years, with above-average hop and the ability to miss bats up in the zone. Hall pitched with diminished velocity at Triple-A earlier in the season, but he learned to better work with his secondary pitches and use them effectively in the zone. His mid-80s changeup has developed later in his career into a plus pitch and represents his best offering to righthanded hitters, while his slider in the mid-to-high 80s is a plus pitch at its best and is his primary way of attacking lefties. Hall reintroduced his curveball, his best pitch as an amateur, giving him a fourth pitch that could be above-average or better. Perhaps most importantly, he improved his command and threw more strikes in 2023 than in years past, giving hope that he’ll be able to reach his upside and be able to have enough control to stay in the rotation.

The Future: In a brief sample down the stretch in 2023, Hall showed he can be a potentially elite reliever, but the Orioles still believe his electric four-pitch mix from the left side is that of a starter. He’ll be in the majors in 2024 as long as he’s healthy, though the team’s offseason moves might determine his role.

This is a great observation. I usually write off Morosi. Doesn't seem to have the track record on breaking things like your Rosenthals and Heymans. He loves to jerk off anything Michigan related, so him and Getz having that connection definitely raises an eyebrow as far as White Sox leaks go for now and the future.

To chain off Bmags, here's the BA Cowser scouting report. He's 4th behind Holliday, Basallo, Mayo.

Quote

4. Colton Cowser OF

Ht: 6'2" | Wt: 220 | B-T: L-R

BA Grade/Risk:50/Medium.

Track Record: Another fast-moving Orioles prospect, Cowser signed for a below-slot $4.9 million as the fifth overall pick in 2021, ended his first full season at Triple-A Norfolk in 2022, then was in the majors by early July 2023 to help provide center field cover. He had a .996 OPS at the time of his promotion, but after being sent back to the minors to work on being more aggressive in the strike zone, he compiled a .777 OPS and his strikeout rate spiked.

Scouting Report: Cowser’s tough major league debut didn’t dim the Orioles’ view of a player they believe still boasts one of the more attractive offensive profiles in their organization. Cowser has some of the most advanced plate discipline in the system, with good on-base ability and the capability to be an above-average hitter for average, even if there are some stark platoon splits on his résumé and there are swing-and-miss issues on non-fastballs. Cowser can have above-average power as he continues to learn which pitches he can best drive, and he improved his hard-hit rate substantially in 2023. Cowser’s above-average speed and arm allow him to play all three outfield positions comfortably, though he’ll probably be above-average in the corners and average to fringe-average in center.

The Future: Cowser has little left to prove in Triple-A, but it’s unclear whether there’s an opportunity with the Orioles for him to get the major league experience required for the next step in his development. He has the makings of a major league regular, potentially a first-division one, though there are aspects of his game that portend an even brighter future. He’ll be in the mix to break camp with the Orioles in 2024.

Scouting Grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 55 | Run: 55 | Fielding: 50 | Arm: 55.
