  1. Well because, science. Well not really science. Just however I feel that day is now science.

  6. Yeah, none of that matters. The Sox were entering a rebuild and Adam Eaton, an “above-average” outfielder, was traded for what turned out to be one of the Cy Young favorites of 2021 who’s 26 years olds. I don’t really care what Eaton did in Washington. The Sox, or any team does that trade every day of the week, twice on Sundays.

  7. Giolito alone = winning. Whether Eaton’s return this year is a win or a loss is an open question until the season plays out.

  8. It really didn't have to be this way. Given the truly reasonable prices on FA innings-eaters, its laughable that the plan was to "wish and hope" that 2 of Cease/Rodon/Lopez stop walking the fucking yard every 5th day. For less than what they paid to Kelvin Herrera, the SOX could have signed Q, Jake Arrieta, or Chris Archer. For slightly more, they could have signed Odorizzi or Smyly. In other words, they could have plopped ~150 to 180 IP of ~3.7-ish to ~4-ish FIP smack dab in the middle of the rotation. This would then cause another youngster [Cease or Rodon] to be used as additional SP depth, instead of having, like ZERO SP depth.

  10. Can't say enough about Moncada's offense this spring. and seeing him moving at will on base paths is great. MIP isn't really as big a deal in MLB as other leagues...but him being right is the best FA deal Sox could have made all off-season.

  15. According to this article, the minimum in the minors for a player on the 40man is $46k. So I don't know exactly how that'll work, but I'd guess he may make more than the minimum, but definitely less than his ML salary.

  21. Not a parallel universe, but rather all part of the August 22, 1980 WSNS Channel 44 Broadcast. Harry Caray interviewed Tony La Russa on the pre game show. Tony was sworn in as an Attorney by Judge before the game by Federal Judge Abe Lincoln Marovitz. Next Harry and Jimmy talked about the announcement that Ed DeBartolo Sr.. had the winning $20M bid to purchase the White Sox. Harry Caray asked Tony for his thoughts and stated the approval of the sale would be a mere formality. They both were certain the new owner would increase spending, and that the American League would ensure the White Sox would stay in Chicago (a few years before Jerry was given the team over DeBartolo, and then threatened to move to St. Pete). Harry also talked about his group of local investors which fell short in the bidding for the team (didn't recall that until watching today). Tony praised Bill Veeck for improving the farm system from one of the worst in baseball to a Top 5 system in baseball. Tony offered explanations for the White Sox failures in the 1980 season, and was looking to salvaging the season with good performances. Britt Burns went on to win, falling one out short of the complete game shutout. Ed Farmer came on to record the final out, to record his 22nd save of the season. He recorded eight more to end the year with 30, passing Terry Forster's 29 to become the all time single season record holder for the White Sox. Bob James would pass him with 35 in 1985. It was Dutchie Caray's Birthday. 1980 was another fun season of White Sox baseball, besides the usual poor record (70-90). Spanky Squires, Chet Lemon, Lamar Johnson, Wayne Nordhagen and rookie Harold Baines were fun to watch. Most of the core of the 1983 team built by Roland Hemond was already in place, with Britt Burns, LaMarr Hoyt and Richard Dotson three of the five starters (Steve Trout and Ross Baumgarten were the other two starters).

  22. The "scum" remark was the worst gaffe in Reinsdorf's career and was so totally un-necessary. I'm not a big fan of Carey and Piersall, but I thought that was way over the top. It was a time to celebrate but Reinsdorf and Einhorn were both bitter. Yes, they had taken a great deal of heat for certain things, but they had no understanding of White Sox fans. The rest of the 1980s was a disaster. The only smart thing they did was fire LaRussa.

  23. Turns out veteran pitchers often work on shit in spring training and don't care at all about velocity or results until it gets closer to real games, and even then they don't really care until the bright lights are on and the games count. Go figure. I really can't emphasize enough how meaningless spring is for 90% of the players. You might have 2 guys on a 25 man roster that are using spring to "prove something". The rest are working on something and DGAF about results.

  31. Pretty sure it means Lopez and Lambert shouldn’t be the extent of SP depth in a year it’s needed more than ever, and so many solid FA options were available for pennies on the dollar. Quintana and Chris Archer come to mind.

  32. I can't like, imagine how good it will feel to sit in a seat at the park and hear crowd noise and the crack of the bat again. That is such a distinct, big atmosphere and there is nothing remotely like that feeling for the last year or so.

  34. how on earth is that a bad plan. We have no SP depth. And we have no need for him in the bullpen.

  37. The wording seems to indicate that fully vaccinated people do not count toward capacity limits for everything, including stadiums, theaters, etc. Unless places ask for proof of vaccination in order to increase attendance, I'm not sure what the rule change does. You could, theoretically, fill a theater for a concert or a sports venue if you required proof of vaccination. I don't see anyone doing that, but you never know.

  42. Unfortunately we can play a lot of this: What if we took Kyle Lewis, Kelenic, and didn't trade Tatis? All these things were projected/realistic to some degree. The lineup that comes out of that is instant dynasty. At the same time, every team can probably play that game: What if Boston traded Benintendi instead of Moncada, what if the Cardinals raised their offer to Robert, Cubs didn't trade Eloy, Nationals didn't trade Giolito, Dunning, and Nationals Version of Lopez, etc.

  43. Imagine him in RF instead of Eaton. We screwed the pooch with that miss.
    1 point
  44. Don't know why anyone would bash him. This roster's likely gonna need a 6th and 7th, and possibly an 8th SP; most teams do. Dunning ain't here any more, and this is what this roster is, for better or worse. Let's pump the brakes on deeming Katz a miracle worker for just a minute. Katz couldn't "fix" Fulmer, and the results remain to be seen with Cease. Ugh, why didn't they sign another SP this offseason? The bullpen looks like it'll be NAILS, even without seeing much of Hendriks so far.

  45. Future performance clearly favors the White Sox for the trade, but there are some here who would argue the WS title trumps other arguments. Waiting for someone to post a Tatis Jr. for Geoff Blum trade would have been worth it, because "Flags Fly Forever"! Geoff was definitely worth Ryan Meaux, the player the Sox sent to, wait for it, the San Diego Padres at the 2005 trade deadline. People were saying the Eaton trade was worth it for Washington since they won the WS and Eaton had a good WS performance (with a 1.5 bWAR season, his best with Washington). They also said his WS performance was a good reason for Eaton's White Sox signing in December. Hope it works out, will take the season and whether he is picked up for his option to determine the net result.

  46. It makes sense. He is not a bullpen piece, and unless they change course and transition Kopech into a starter, Lopez is the fifth starter when the inevitable SP injury occurs.

  47. I’ll agree with the comments on McCann, I would have rather kept him and possibly used the money we gave to Yasmani towards other needs (not a guarantee we woulda spent the money). I know the statistics say Grandal is great defensively, but the eye test last year he didn’t jump out. But he does have great OBP and I do believe he’s a leader (all the players say he lives and breaths baseball). Worried about his age/health.

  48. Seems to me that the 20's will be loaded with HS talent All my favorite prospects (Rocker, Leiter, Hill, Henry Davis who I would have loved for CWS) seem to be going Top 10, even Hoglung should be gone before 22 Leaning towards Oregon State RHP Kevin Abel in the first 5 rounds, he's shooting up the rankings, but unsure how high Could be a HS guy for us early, Wake Forest RHP Ryan Cusick could be there too
