Them and the astros would be the two other orgs in the “big market” rules of the CBA that can not truly handle max team salaries. So they don’t get extra firsts, they don’t get extra intl budget. So like could you run the exact playbook as the Rays in the Sox and it still work? That extra stuff matters. The braves market full of transplants has also made it a fickle fan base that needs wins to show up, which they’ve overcome a lot recently. JR always looks at Yankees, dodgers and says no way they can be that. But the Sox have nothing preventing them from success when the braves have been as dominant as they have for 30 years3 points

Only Benintendi and Grandal have more walks than AV, this is a team refuses to take walks while constantly swinging at balls outside the zone, it’s last in the league in BBs and last in OBP.3 points

The bravesation, our most comparable franchise who has built maybe the best offense in history, would be great.3 points

Wouldn’t the porn fan likely be the incel, and the married guy with three kids would be the opposite? I’m not arguing that he’s not crazy or evangelical, but words have meanings.3 points

I really wish they had given up prospects at the deadline for him. His leadership could have been vital in their drive to lose over 100 games.2 points

Good managers/leaders know they are not the smartest person in the room. Getz seems to be surrounding himself with smarter people who know a lot about baseball. It's a nice first step. I'm particularly optimistic about getting someone in the organization that can (hopefully) improve the pitching on this team.2 points

https://www.mlb.com/news/josh-barfield-finds-success-in-d-backs-front-office https://www.amazon.com/MVP-Machine-Baseballs-Nonconformists-Players/dp/1541698940 The MVP Machine (book by Travis Sawchik and Ben Lindbergh) has a chapter dedicated to Brian Bannister’s work combining analytics and on field player development. So I’m actually excited about this hire. Also highly recommend the book. "For too long, stat geeks like me ignored the 'development' side of 'scouting and development.' The MVP Machine is the book that's going to change that. Travis Sawchik and Ben Lindbergh persuasively and entertainingly demonstrate that a baseball player's success is less about God-given talent and more about innovation, hard work, and the willingness to take a more scientific approach to the game. Read it, and you won't think about baseball in quite the same way again."―Nate Silver, founder and editor-in-chief of FiveThirtyEight2 points

Not much to read there that isn't new under the sun. It's still the Reinsdorf way. Two roses grew out of a bed of s%*# and Reinsdorf is hoping for a 3rd but I still smell a turd. I remember Grifol talking about what he seen from the Royals dugout concerning the Sox. I guess he forget the habitual pile of s%*# in his own. Obtaining people and players from habitual losing organizations seem to bring it with them. Any players that come from winning organizations are often the ones a team has no issue with them leaving. Wake me for the parade. Meanwhile I'll look for a new team.2 points

Before we get into the measurable successes of his tenure, I just want to state for the record, I have nothing against Chris Getz as a person. Like everyone else, I was hoping they would bring in a proven outside mega talent to come in and completely change everything as I believe wholesale change is needed in this moment. I doubted the hire because I’m conditioned to doubt everything coming out of this team. They have given me zero reason to trust anything. As far as Getz, I hope he is successful in every way. I hope that he can make a name for himself that will carry weight outside the White Sox circles and lay the groundwork for a long, successful front office career as long as he wants it. My expectations are very low, but this will always be my hope for him personally and this team.2 points

Maybe Getz is smarter than some people here give him credit for. Smart people are not afraid to hire smart subordinates.2 points

September 22, 1959 - The White Sox clinched the American League pennant beating the Indians 4-2 in Cleveland. Al Smith and “Jungle” Jim Rivera hit back-to-back home runs in the game. Smith also threw out former Sox star “Minnie” Minoso trying to score a run. A crowd estimated by the Chicago Sun-Times at 125,000 was at Midway Airport to greet the Sox when they returned home. All this on a night when Chicago fire commissioner Robert Quinn ordered the air raid sirens turned on to celebrate the title, causing fear and panic in a number of non-baseball fans who thought the Russians were attacking. The Sox would wind up winning the 1959 pennant by five games over the Tribe with a mark of 94-60. While they were near the bottom in most offensive categories the pitching was stellar and the defense had three Gold Glove winners in Nellie Fox, Luis Aparicio and Sherm Lollar. The Sox also won 35 games that season by one run with 15 losses. September 22, 1966 - In a game at Yankee Stadium, pitcher Joe Horlen and his teammates stopped New York to the tune of 4-1. Only 413 fans were in attendance at the gigantic stadium. It’s believed to be the smallest home crowd ever at a Yankee game. Yankee broadcaster "Red" Barber told the camera crew to pan the empty stands and was eventually fired over that decision.1 point

19th time this season the Sox took a lead into the 7th inning or later AND lost the game. 19 times. Incredible. Will be interesting to see if Getz feels the bullpen needs fixing before the rotation or the other way around (since we know JR won't give him enough money to do both...)1 point

FWIW, I saw a Royals fan on Twitter claim Watson has been a big problem to their scouting success and was soon to be fired. Who knows if true, but the fact he is a Royals guy doesn’t make me optimistic.1 point

I wouldn’t doubt there’s been like a 6-8 game stretch this year where they only scored 12 total runs.1 point

imagine having a chance to win a game, finding yourself in a high leverage situation at the end of the game, having a fully-rested bullpen, and deciding to bring in the guy who hasn't pitched in months and has only pitched 10 innings in total this year.1 point

Quero is the real key. He's at least another half year away. In the end, they will run Toukki Scholtens Patino and a couple of Tier B/C FA pitchers out there and roll the dude on holding onto Cease/Kopech. Likely looking at another 90 loss season regardless. Now if Montgomery doesn't become a stud or stay healthy...the Sox are really in trouble.1 point

That is his 3rd walk in September. In July he had 1, in September he had 2. In June he had 7, in May he had 8. 3 walks in 3 weeks is not going in the right direction.1 point

With these potential KC hires, Getz will remain on Royal training wheels forever…and if Selvy is brought into prop up loser Pedro and bring joy and happiness into Sox locker room with his toothsome grin, the clown show will continue. i1 point

There's a guy who started with the Braves as a scout and who worked his way up to an assistant General Manager position with the Braves by 2005 who is currently just a senior advisor of baseball operations for the team in Texas. He's probably available.1 point

9-22-59, A very special day in my youth, I almost hit the ceiling in our living room as my parents and I were watching the game on WGN when Little Looie fielded a Vic Power grounder stepped on second and threw to Big Klu for the double play and my boyhood heroes had won the 1959 American League Pennant. A few minutes later the air raid sirens went off all across the city, this 13 year old knew exactly why they were going off but thousands and thousands of Chicagoans were scared out of their minds thinking that we were going to get nuked by the Russians. I even knew that Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev was visiting the USA at the time and there was no way the USSR was going to nuke the country, IIRC Khrushchev had visited Disneyland in California that afternoon. 10 days later my favorite uncle was able to get tickets to game 2 of the World Series and took my mother and me to the game in which the Sox lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Dodgers1 point

The Miley Collection has the actual radio broadcast of the September 22, 1959 game from Cleveland. I bought mine a few years ago on EBAY. This is the actual WCFL broadcast featuring White Sox announcers Bob Elson and Don Wells. The Miley Collection is sold on CD.1 point

I'm still pretty sure that the #1 person who said Joe Kelly is being signed was Tony LaRussa. I'm not sure what else went into that, but basically the press said it happened because of him and he personally bragged about how good the signing was going to be right after it happened.1 point

That's a pretty classless thing to say about the Pirates. Pretty big dick move from a team that lost 2 of 3 to the Rockies and 3 of 4 to AZ as well.1 point

I mentioned my theory about the downside of executives this long in the tooth is only fighting a battle once. Maybe they did fight for more at one point, lost to Jerry, and then just gave up for 15 years, whereas in new turnover people who have used it before to good effect may convince again. I have no idea what its like to work in a baseball org, but that concept at least makes sense to me. So many things that should be done getting shut down because 5-6 years ago it was tried. Then randomly somebody doesn't care and just forces it in and its a good idea. OTOH, Jerry definitely has re-asserted himself as a control freak owner with horrible ideas as we've seen in the press conference, so maybe he really has been extremely stubborn on that front.1 point

The usual progression among white Sox fans for trades like this is: 1. Pre trade: “I’m not sure we’re only one piece away, this guy isn’t bad but he’s expensive, I hope we don’t overpay. 2. Trade happens: fanboys celebrate the success and brilliance of the GM and tell everyone else how stupid they are for not seeing this brilliant success. You always hear compliments over how little they actually gave up, and anyone who doesn’t praise the GM is called a bad fan 3. Later that year: “well maybe we weren’t one player away, but this guy is still good so that was a good trade. 4. Two years later: wow we are bad, our payroll is too high and we are selling off pieces to get if down. Our system is terrible too. Boy the guys we gave up in that trade turned out way better than I imagined, wouldn’t it be nice to have them back while they’re still pre arbitration. Oh well, no one could possibly have seen this coming, so there’s no reason to learn anything from it or do anything different this offseason. 5. repeat.1 point

Spencer hit 18 hrs and drove in 69 runs in 470 at bats for the south side hit men in 77. He hit some mammoth shots that year like almost all the Sox. Spencer hit more than a couple off the facade in RF. Soderholm hit 25 of his 102 career hrs in 77. He also consistently crushed the ball that year.1 point

I think he cleared the low bar of "performed the job at an org different from the white sox". I *do* like the DIamondbacks though and how they have built on the fly seemingly thru just draft picks and smart trades and patience. Tough, as we've seen, to have so many young players and pitchers and it mix right. How much is Josh Barfield a part of that? no idea. But I know he saw a different org operate and so he may as well be Branch Rickey as JR would say.1 point

This has been broken record stuff, but like, I just don't see why this is that big of a deal? I don't see talent going out being impactful, I don't see the salary coming back to be the full amt. I don't think Salvy will make this team a contender, but who cares. If he was that big of a help to a young pitching staff, well we see the limits of that in KC. Well, I guess I should backtrack. In deals the sox have telegraphed for a year plus, we have paid embarrassing sums. But otherwise I don't think this is the worst thing we'll do this offseason.1 point

Yeah, I wouldn’t be worried about that. It’s not like China is known for human rights abuses or cracking down on dissent. I’m sure they’ll give you access to your money if you step out of line in the slightest.1 point
