  1. What kind of “haul” would you expect for a guy like Bummer? Middle releiver with a 6.79 ERA owed a minimum of $6:75 million usually don’t get you a slew of top prospects.

  2. Bummer may have talent, but he now qualifies as a project. He's been progressively shittier for 2 seasons. I'd rather the Sox got Ohtani and Trout for Bummer. But realistically, this is probably what was on the table for him. Everybody has been saying the White Sox have to get 3-6 project starters to fill out their rotation. They just got two.

  3. Yes. Clearly I have been far too pessimistic about the White Sox the last few years. Please brag more about their success the last two years, I would love to hear more about how happy you are and the excellent job they have done.

  4. I’ve never met another person whose entire evaluation is to take the previous season and assume that continues on forever. I also don’t know how anyone could be using ERA as their primary pitching metric in this day & age. Secondly, what is a top 100 prospect worth? Are they all worth the same and if your answer is no, then what type of top 100 prospect is Cease worth? Also, why was Giolito with 2 months of control worth a legit 50 FV prospect, but two years of Cease plus a potential compensation pick is worth the same? If you say it’s because of the “market”, who are all these free agent SPs with legit TOR ceilings that will be affordable to teams like the Orioles? Finally, how do you know there wasn’t a strong deal last year? There are rumors that Hahn was asking for Jackson Holiday until very late in the process (i.e. not serious negotiating). Perhaps Elias made an offer that would be to Getz’s liking now? It wouldn’t be the first time two teams couldn’t agree to a trade at the deadline and then for it to happen in the off-season (Sale, Lynn, etc).

  5. I'm actually encouraged by this trade. I made a post a week ago that Getz would or should be shopping among the non-tenders since the 40 was so weak. The encouraging part is by making the trade he didn't have to wrestle with other GMs and agents once non tenders become Free agents. He went to one of the most talented 40s in baseball or A. Anthopoulus came to him. I'd love to give Getz credit but this may have been AAs idea since it was the Braves who wanted Bummer at the trade deadline because the Phillies have a lot of good LH hitters. I have said that I wanted to see what Getz's 1st significant transaction would be because it would set the tone for what was to come. Maybe we can put to rest any notion that S. Perez or Merrifield end up on the Sox . With precious few dollars to work with and little talent to trade at least Getz held true to his word about SP depth and defense while increasing depth in the middle infield.

  6. Then there's a zero percent chance they will get him. The market for Dylan Cease almost certainly will be 2 Top 100s plus maybe a semi-useful third piece. To get a similar pitcher on the open market would cost somewhere around 80-100m (in a long term commitment) more than Cease will be paid the next few years and alot of owners would prefer a trade than paying big money for a FA SP. If BAL is gonna play the prospect hugging game again like at the deadline, then f*** em. Cowser and Ortiz OR Hjerstad, Ortiz and Povich.

  7. That Bartolo guy is a fraud in all honesty, but I’m sure everyone on the major league roster is available for the right price. What I don’t get is who would want to acquire Eloy & Colas in the same package (don’t think Moncada is tradable without eating money). I do hope they’re pursing Kjerstad in a Cease trade though. Damn would it be nice to have a young LH power hitter to build this lineup around along with Montgomery.

  8. We have Hawk to thank for that.

  9. Time to bring Big Slim back into the fold... time for Katz to tap into that Heuer/Crochet magic in the pen!

  10. https://www.mlb.com/news/non-tendered-mlb-free-agents-2023-24 I'd take a shot with Hudson, Heuer, Bush, Senzel, Meadows and Turnbull

  11. Damnit, there goes the mystery and intrigue. Now the trade is far less interesting.

  12. Bummer sucks dude. No matter how many other people say otherwise.

  13. This actually might be the most interesting thing about the trade…?

  14. I see it like this: draft shortstops and center fielders because the owner won’t spend on premium positions in free agency. They can find first base power elsewhere. Also, if Kurtz isn’t as good as projected ultimately, there’s no fallback plan or positional versatility. I hope someone else makes that call.

  15. Go sign Woodruff to an incentive laden two year deal. I know shoulder injuries can be death blows, but given where we’re at it’s 100% worth a shot IMO.

  16. I mean a high ceiling each year (can be more than good..great), he's not your average run of the mill relief arm. Five guys who were about to be dfa'd is a crappy haul, one for one trade would move the needle for me. Reminds me of when I used to play fantasy football and someone wanted to trade me three guys for my good WR, I already had guys on my bench just as good as those three guys so I was just offered more crap. Or when I was a kid and went trick or treating, some houses gave a handful of generic crappy candy, some gave one full size Snickers... What do you think I wanted? ?

  17. Dumping Eloy at his lowest value would normally seem unwise, but I honestly don’t even care at this point. Good riddance.

  18. This was expected. There’s just no reason to non-tender anyone. All the guys who they’d get rid of are pre-arb and can just be DFA later.

  19. The way I see it, they need to rip the bandaid off now and trade Cease this offseason. I don’t see how holding him into next season accomplishes anything. Yeah, maybe he will pitch better than he did in 2023, but it’s also possible that he could have another down year or even worse, get hurt. Not worth the risk to me. Cash in now.

  20. Gilbert even being available is a figment of his imagination. Seattle is looking to add, not create a hole in its rotation when they were in the playoff hunt until the final weekend last season.

  21. I like this idea and Will Taylor on college side. I’m hoping PJ Morlando impresses on prep side

  23. I think Soroka is probably done. I mean, no one the Sox got is what you call good, but maybe the garbage they just added is better than the garbage that was already in the 40 man? Clearly, a team this bad doesn’t need Aaron Bummer, and he will benefit from getting away from their putrid defense. I wonder if Fraser Ellard has an outside shot of being an okay pen piece.

  24. Just making this the catch-all for non Sox related offseason stuff... by Shaun O'Neill MLB.com With Peter Seidler, there was no “yeah, but …” He set a World Series championship as a goal and backed his words with actions. Period. He promised a first-class fan experience at Petco Park and delivered. Period. He was curious about his adopted city and constantly sought more knowledge about it. Period. He was kind, friendly and respectful to all those he encountered. Period. He sought solutions for the toughest problems and did not assign blame. Period. He was relentlessly optimistic -- about the Padres, about baseball, about homelessness issues, about the city. Period. Peter Seidler, the Padres’ owner and chairman, will be dearly missed. That was clear to those who knew him, and then became evident to all by the reaction to his death Tuesday. Pitchers Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove joined the many fans who paid their respects at Petco Park. Darvish was eloquent on social media. “My heart hurts with the unfortunate news of Peter Seidler’s passing,” Darvish wrote. “I’m sure everyone that knew him would agree with me when I say Peter was a truly wonderful human being and being in his presence was always a blessing. “He was a teacher of life and taught me countless lessons from all the interactions we had. May his beautiful soul rest in peace.” Padres fans should be commended for not waiting until after Seidler’s death to express their fondness for him. A scan of Petco Park during a game -- almost always a full ballpark in 2023 -- would bring sightings of multiple “Seidler” jerseys. That is a rare thing in pro sports for fans to feel so connected with an owner that they customize jerseys in his honor. In April, Padres fans broke into a “Peter! Peter! Peter!” serenade when he was spotted strolling in the stands … in Arizona! We know he heard the chant. Here’s hoping he felt it, too.

  25. I'm pretty conflicted. I wouldn't be upset if they landed the #1 pick but the franchise might be better off if they get the 7th pick.

  26. The issue isn’t with “spa days” for players. You’re making incredible amount of investments into assets (well at least some MLB teams are) and you need to take care and maintain those assets so they perform at the highest level. The issue is players taking “advantage” of those spa days. We have enough data to tell us Eloy, Moncada, and Robert to a degree seem unwilling to take the field unless they are at 100%, which isn’t very likely come July, August. And with the inmates seeming running the asylum on 35th and Shields, it’s going to lead to a lot of missed games from players and a bad environment. There is also enough evidence from former players over the last 2-3 seasons that the clubhouse hasn’t been all that interested in winning. Burger said it after his first game with the Marlins. Pedro isn’t the guy, and this roster ain’t it either. As always, nothing changes until it changes at the top.

  27. I still hate hearing "oh he had a wrist injury of course he struggled that is obvious everyone should have known that was coming" when no one said "This signing is a bad idea because he's coming off a wrist injury" in the offseason when he was signed.

  28. JFC fire this clown immediately. And I know this is all secondhand through a couple of of podcast hosts, but the on-field product, the lack of accountability for vets vs. rookies, and general lack of urgency last year all make this way too believable.
    1 point
  29. That’s all fair, but holding onto to Cease as part of a plan to lose 90 games rather than 100 will cost us greatly beyond 2024. Next year will almost certainly be a disaster no matter what we do and I’d rather suffer a bit in hopes of having a team that can win a shitty AL Central by 2026.
    1 point
  30. If 2024 doesn’t matter then then we will see the worst Sox team in their pathetic history, maybe as bad as the 1962 expansion NY Mets. I don’t think most Sox fans are all in on another rebuild and will probably say enough is enough with this franchise, at 78 years old I’m hanging with them but have lived in Florida for 30 years and it would be no big deal for me to switch my allegiance to the Rays as I watch just about all their games now, if I still lived in Chicago, I don’t know what I would do.
    1 point
  31. 2024 simply doesn’t matter. This team has no chance of competing next year and you have to do what’s best for 2025 forward.

  32. I like this. Bradfield sure sounds like the type of player the current regime wants. Ugh. Can't get over the Gonzalez pick still. (Hope he proves me wrong.)

  33. Noelvi Marte (#23), Edwin Arroyo (#57), Levi Stoudt and a fourth guy I've never heard of who probably isn't making the majors. I'd be thrilled with this kind of return for Cease I think. I wouldn't mind STL as a trading partner and a deal centered around Masyn Winn and Tink Hence.

  34. Castillo was 29 years old and I believe had 1.5 years of control left. Castillo had more good seasons than Cease but mostly because he was in MLB 2 years before Cease debuted. Very comparable numbers. The Mariners sent 4 prospects to the Reds, 3 of them were in the Mariners top 5 prospects and 2 of those were top 100 prospects overall (#18 and #93).

  35. They will for sure be in the market, but I don't think they will pay what the White Sox are asking. He's more valuable to a team like the Dodgers, Giants, Yankees, Red Sox, etc. because they get him for 2 years cheap and then they will still control him through an extension. You can pay the prospect price when you know you are getting many years of this asset. Baltimore, in my opinion, will not pay the fair price because they know they only get 2 years from him and that's it. I really believe if Baltimore was serious about it Cease would have been traded there at the deadline. They obviously got pretty deep in the discussions. You might just hold out hope they go "Welp, maybe if we had traded for Cease we wouldn't have been swept out of the playoffs."

  36. The Orioles are a great fit on paper, young team ready to compete now. Need a top SP, they have assets they can trade without hurting their team now and in the future. In reality, they are a terrible fit. They are reluctant to trade any of these high end guys, they have already come out and said they can't even resign their own players so like you said above, there is no way they would resign Cease for what it would take.

  37. Think about what the Cubs got for Yu Darvish. That's about the best you could do.
    1 point
  38. Lmao come on. That's just ridiculous. His lowest fWAR the past 3 seasons was 3.7, which was last season. Somehow he has zero trade value now?

  40. Absolutely — plus it’s a clear sellers’ market now, meaning the upside from the deadline represents less of a premium than in an average year.
    1 point
  41. Given the current state of the organization, I think it would be really risky to hold Cease until the deadline. One serious shoulder or elbow injury and you’re left with nothing.
    1 point
  42. Depends what else is out there on the trade market. FA's will be prohibitively expensive, and require 4-6+ year commitments. Cease is perfect for a middle or lower-tier budget organization with at least a Top 15 farm system...think of the Brewers here if they don't rebuild, or one with current cash-flow problems like the Padres or even the Twins (don't really advocate that one, but the White Sox weren't going to be competitive in 2024/2025 regardless). Heck, the Dodgers are another team that immediately comes to mind that has suffered numerous losses for a variety of reasons on the pitching front...(Lynn/Buehler/Urias/Kershaw/May)...and need someone exactly like Dylan that's durable and would figure in anywhere from #2-4 in the rotation. No indications of any issues whatsoever about him as a teammate or clubhouse chemistry (see Clevinger/Bauer) concern.
    1 point
  43. Then they’re a bit ignorant to how trades work. Cease isn’t going to be given away for nothing. All that matters is what the Orioles FO views his value at. They got slapped in the playoffs because they failed to add to rotation talent, and it’s not exactly like there is a can’t miss option in the FA pool. Cease had a rough year last year but the stuff is still there and his 2022 performance was elite. If they want him, pay up.
    1 point
  44. Did you read the Orioles board linked? They don't even want to trade Kjerstad straight up for Cease. If I were not a fan of the Sox I wouldn't be interested in acquiring him for anything more than a bag of baseballs.

  45. Benetti wanted to miss 25% of his "dream job" so he could pursue his other "dream jobs." The Sox said no. So that's that.

  48. Truthfully, this won’t make much difference to me and most Sox fans. I watched probably 100 innings of White Sox Baseball last year. That number may be lower in 2024.
