I have held back commenting on this story, because I wanted to have all the facts before doing so. Ultimately, this appears to be a big nothing that has been blown out of proportions by all sides. The moral police immediately assumed the worst by thinking some 22 year old drunk kid was legit evil and ripping into Marte over his mom being dead despite it being unlikely he even knew of her passing. And now you have the free speech police all worked up because the kid received a lifetime ban from all Major League teams when it turned out he was only making some generic “yo mama” jokes. The amount of attention this story has gotten and all the corresponding responses are the perfect depiction of just how fucked up this country is right now. The need for many to immediately serve as judge, jury, and executioner on social media is a massive problem for a country built around due process. At the same time, this idea that people can say and do dumb s%*# under the guise of “free speech” and should just receive a slap on the wrist is just as problematic. The reality here is we have a dumb, drunk 22 year old riding a player to be cool and/or impress the girl he was with. The comments were random and not built to personally strike a nerve with Marte, but unfortunately by happenstance they did. The coaches then yelled at the fan and told him that he had gone too far given the circumstance and it sounds like the kid didn’t lay off. IMO, if that last point is true, then the kid is probably a pretty big douchebag and should be held accountable for his actions. Whether that should be lifetime bans, I don’t know and candidly I don’t care. This is a private fucking business and if they don’t want this douche around then this is their choice. I get many of us have done stupid and hurtful things in our youth, myself included, but an important part of growth is actually facing some consequences. The kid certainly shouldn’t have been doxxed, but if MLB wants to tell him to f*** off forever then hopefully he and others learn from this and think a little bit before they act in the future.7 points

Colson with another 3 hits tonight including a double and triple. That's 8 hits in the last 3 games including 2 HR's 2 doubles and a triple. Thank you to the posters for declaring him a bust/cooked, the anti-jinx was just what the doctor ordered!6 points

I see the vision now, MAT missed scoring on purpose to help out the Sox record in 1 run games.3 points

he's supposed to be, like, an expert base runner. he isn't considered 'good' at much else. yet taylor's responsible for two of the most notable base running gaffes we've seen this year.3 points

I’m sorry but Robert turning into a completely worthless trade chip outweighs any positives from the first half. He was the last “big” piece to help accelerate the rebuild process but no longer the case.3 points

I think the team is on every decent player's blacklist. Sure you will get older veterans where this is the only option than playing in the minors. Then their biggest hope is they get traded to a contender in a exchange for a for pretender. The only one that wins the trade is the player leaving. The are buyer and there are cellars - see my play on words there.3 points

Losing is a habit. It starts with overrating your prospects and farm system. Next is thinking you can be cheapass and win at baseball. Not everyone is the Rays. The same s%*# teams do the same thing. If you somehow get lucky and land a star player in the draft don't build around them with outsiders but have a hard on over the prospect you get in return. Jerry is not the only owner that lets you know fans can't have nice things. I doubt this will ever be a solid organization in my lifetime. It's a complete 180 from the other team in town. That's not always the case in NY.3 points

After reading comments the last two years, I think most here are basically on the same page, the difference comes down one thing: Faith The results speak for themselves. Because Jerry made Getz the choice to run things, a “clean slate” was never possible, because of his involvement with the previous regime. That shouldn’t have come as a surprise to Getz either. Additionally, while everyone involved with this team the last two decades should wear their failures, Jerry is the boss. Jerry is the one who kept Hahn and KW 10 years too long, Jerry is the one who refuses to sign top tier players, Jerry is the one who refuses to adapt to baseball in 2025, Jerry is the one who decided Getz was the most qualified the run baseball ops. It’s been bad decision after bad decision. So when it comes to the topic of the performance of Chris Getz as President of Baseball Ops, it boils down to what level of faith you have in the decision making of Jerry Reinsdorf. I’ve made my feelings known on the subject many times, but my faith in Jerry on a scale of 1-100 is about -8 right now. Doesn’t mean Getz is absolutely going to fail, but my level of skepticism is extremely high based on Jerry thinking he was qualified to do the job. From a baseball perspective, Jerry Reinsdorf is objectively an awful decision maker.3 points

Cags 0-4 with 3Ks today. Slashing .171/.218/.280 through 82 AB with 2HR (both in the same game), 4BB, and 20K. It's a huge jump for almost everyone, even top prospects.2 points

Absolutely LOVE Venable letting the 23 year old close the game in that pressure situation. Terrific managing that I don't think I've seen in that aspect since Ozzie with Jenks.2 points

I have read the Vargas has been bad the past month, but since June 1st he has put up a 10% BB rate, 14% K rate, and a .174 ISO. His hard hit rate is 44% during this frame and yet his BABIP is only at .243. Based on those peripherals, I will believe he’s been unlucky more than bad. Teel has a 119 wRC+ as a rookie catcher despite his xwOBA being 45 points higher than wOBA. Meidroth has been close to a league average hitter based on the skill set he was advertised as having and has shown enough at SS to look like he could stick there if need be. Regardless, he should continue to improve with time. Sosa has flashed being a decent 2B option on the cheap. The latter two guys won’t be stars, but having 1.5 to 2.5 win players is needed to go from terrible to average. And on the pitching side, Smith has been a tremendous pickup and Burke has flashed a ton over the past month to believe he can be a rotation mainstay. I’d add that Taylor has shown to have a hell of arm and will be an impact player in some capacity, whether that’s in relief or eventually as a starter. There are couple of other young guys like Martin & Vasil that have pitched well, but the peripherals don’t look great so won’t count them as wins just yet. By no means should anyone be doing cartwheels over these “wins”, but during the second half of Hahn’s tenure we had very few young players perform even close to these levels outside of the elite prospects acquired at the front end of the rebuild.2 points

So here’s my issue with this: there were some young positional players named earlier in this thread that are positives but are they positives just cause we can’t write them off as busts yet? Like Vargas had one great month and has been super meh again, I like Meidroth but he’s been extremely ok, Teel has been ok. Like, I guess it’s cool cause they don’t suck yet but there’s not a young positional player on the roster that I’m sure is a starter going forward. Just the positivity for some of these guys cause they don’t absolutely suck yet seems odd. But baby steps I guess or something.2 points

Lol…context certainly matters when assessing the performance of a team. As you have noted many times, the team last year was historically bad with few building blocks and since then our owner has further gutted the payroll. I’m not sure what your expectations were for this season, but this team was going to be incredibly bad again from a W-L perspective in pretty much any scenario. As such, “success” really comes down to winning on the margins rather than being a non-terrible club. Young players showing some signs of life is by far the most important outcome this year and we have seen a decent sized group of kids that look like legitimate pieces even if most of them lack star upside. Regardless, it’s just a first step in a long-term process but ultimately a necessary one to get back to even normal bad. Veterans performing at or above expectations is a lesser but still important objective. I think the reality is Robert has flopped hard which will hurt quite a bit come the deadline. None of the other vets really have the ability to move the needle much in terms of return, but I am pleased with some of Getz’s dumpster dive pickups as they have been more productive than what we typically got from his predecessor and is hopefully a sign of the progress made behind the scenes. Finally, watching Venable and his coaching staff not completely implode in the wake of another tough season is a positive. It appears that the players actually respect him and as bad as things have been we haven’t really seen guys quit like they did under Grifol last year. Ultimately, none of this should qualify as “exciting” because we are still multiple years away from being mediocre, but objectively speaking it’s been an ok 1st half if you contextualize your expectations.2 points

To me, the shooting in the park is an exponentially bigger story and it felt like it quickly got swept under the rug. Still no idea how that wasn’t one of the biggest sport stories in years. If our fanbase or baseball fans in general should be enraged about something, that was the event that should have set them off. I was at that game with my two young sons and I’ve practically grown numb to the fact there was a woman there who snuck a gun into the park through her fat rolls. It raises so many questions that deserve answers and yet to this day those accountable have skirted any repercussions. Just a wild difference between that story and this one.2 points

I’ve started writing something like this several times, but deleted it based on my words’ injustice to my thoughts. Thank you for the lucid, logical, and rational post that represents exactly my thoughts and sentiments.2 points

I think the outrage stems over the fact that people are automatically assuming that he taunted Marte over his mother being dead. Turns out it was just a standard issue “your mother’s a…” crack that players hear all the time. It affected him because his mom is dead, which 100% understandable. What bothers me now are the usual moral outragers, the ones glomming onto it to torture the guy and put him through hell. It’s uncalled for and, as one person already said, unacceptable. He opened his mouth and said the wrong thing to the wrong person. His banning is enough, hopefully he learned his lesson. He doesn’t need an internet lynch mob coming after to him to revel in their moral superiority.2 points
-
This is bullshit! Getz needs to be s%*# on. He was a huge part of the problem. Nobody is saying it was only him and JR that created this mess. They ALL were involved. The problem is people saying Getz had NO involvement and was in no way culpable and needs to be given a lot more rope to fix something that wasn't his doing.2 points
-
See, now this I have seen and its because there are select people who try to say Getz actually was handed this mess when in reality he was part of the problem and should have been cast off with everyone else when the old regime got purged.2 points

I think the best thing the kid could do now since he clearly is being outed, is come out and admit it exactly what was said “hey, this is what I said. (Insert quote) Knowing now the information about him mom, I never would have said anything like that and regret saying it with all of my heart and apologize to Ketel Marte, the dbacks, and the white Sox” to me, if he literally said nothing worse than a yo mama joke, the above would get him off a lot of peoples bad side and he could move on.2 points

This is why I said its a waste of my time to engage with you. The above is 1000% wrong, no matter how many times you say otherwise. Also tunneling and pitch shape has existed since i was playing college baseball 20+ years ago. Tunneling has been something coaches have been discussing for decades. Now there's more data on it, but its always existed. I never called anyone dumb but I was the only one who brought and actual statistical analysis into the conversation that people only discredited with their feels which i dont like to waste much time on. Also, I chose to have kids so no sympathy required for my career but appreciate the sentiment. We all do things we dont want for our family.1 point

Now if they follow this up and trade Vic and Pat for Beal and some assets I’m happier. I don’t mind that the team has a lot of young players - that part is at least good and plenty are solid - not likely any hit into a star but I get that concept at least - but when you are doing that strategy - you need to also accumulate assets at stages.1 point

Venable has terrible management instincts and a surprising lack of judgment. The Sox draw a nice crowd on a a Beautiful Friday night so without Robert Jr. , he plays MAT in C and Noda in RF. Soxtalk posters were laughing at that line-up before the game started.1 point

If you want to manage the White Sox, you must stick a 1B in RF1 point

Slater isn’t a Roberto Clemente but I’d rather see him in right than Noda. Venable trying to be cute again with the lineup and it bites him in the ass.1 point

oh wow putting a 1B in RF was a great idea!1 point

Don’t see a ball hit the second base bag like that too often. And that’s why a guy like Noda shouldn’t be in right field.1 point

The day he goes, unless another Reinsdorf takes over, my outlook will dramatically change. If it's Ishbia, I'll come in with a hopeful view, because there isn't much historical evidence (at this point at least, I know with the way the possible ownership change is structured, we may find out about his potential spending habits before he's officially owner) and I just don't see how things can get worse under him, from where they are today. For a lot of us, Jerry Reinsdorf is the only owner we've experienced as White Sox fans. When he's gone, everything changes. Doesn't mean everything is going to get better, but the only way this franchise truly changes is by cutting off the head of the snake.1 point
-
I wouldn’t say I have faith in Reinsdorf, but you’re not too far off. I have hope that enough can be done in spite of his vampiric presence to put this franchise in a position to be successful once he finally dies or sells the team.1 point
-
No they are not. No one says that Getz had no involvement. That's impossible - he ran minor league development and was assistant GM. What people are saying is that since we heard he was the one to go over Hahn's head to Jerry and kick this whole process off, that its possible he was also held back by this shitty org and got frustrated enough by it to take action. We're also hoping he can show a glimmer of knowing what the hell he's doing so this thing can turn around. That is by no means absolving him of any blame. The majority of the blame should lie with Hahn, Kenny and JR, though, as they were the ones in charge.1 point
-
I have seen Hahn dodge a LOT of responsibility around here. He's got nicknames like "Teflon Hahn" for a reason. I also know you've said things about how Hahn gets the majority of the blame around here, too, as though you think he shouldn't. I'm also not making anything up, so you can quit that inflammatory nonsense now. This is how people with different opinions than you view what you post. Go ahead and ask them. There's a reason why you are the only person here who keeps getting into it like this with people.1 point

It's not just that tweet from the Fire, this was in the Trib, Sun-Times and the local TV news yesterday as the Fire has released renderings of their new stadium at the 78 to the press. Very impressive. But, I'm a bit surprised they're going with a 22k capacity stadium given soccer's potential to really grow in the coming years. I wonder if there will be the ability to expand seating capacity later. https://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/2025/06/16/chicago-fire-stadium-south-loop-renderings-the-78-joe-mansueto The Fire also say that they are open to the possibility of the White Sox building a stadium on the 78. I'll take their word for it over Brodie Brazil.1 point

I read elsewhere that a new White Sox stadium at the 78 location would only cost $400 million. If that is accurate I would think it would be built there.1 point

This is very reassuring. While there was room for 2, my worry was that with the Sox dragging their feet, maybe Related would say screw it and put the soccer stadium in the middle of the property and leave them out.1 point
