  1. I don't understand the desire to trade Sosa. Would you advocate trading Vargas? Because they are the same age and have the same contract status in terms of time to free agency. I'd be surprised if Getz thought Vargas was so old/close to FA that he should be traded. Not sure why Lenyn would be treated differently. I know Lenyn has a penchant for frustrating mental lapses in the field, but he's also more versatile defensively than Vargas (and just better with the glove in general, other than perhaps 1B where Lenyn seems to have a mental block). There's a non-trivial chance that Lenyn produces more value than any other infielder on this roster in the next 5 seasons. If the thought was that teams wanted to pay a huge cost for Lenyn, maybe you think about it. But I doubt they're banging down the doors. You'd be hoping the return turns into a Lenyn Sosa type of player.

  2. Considering we have seen absolutely zero evidence of there being any problems, both on and off the field, I think you are putting too much weight into that word being used and swinging it in a negative direction.

  3. Remember the two O’s fans that come to Soxtalk to do prospect clutching and being cheap over the Cease deal?

  4. It’s an antiquated and derogatory phrase. Find a different way to get your point across. It’s not that hard.

  5. Because to anyone outside of your male-centric perspective, using how girls throw to imply that someone is weak or lesser, is insulting to anyone who isn't male. It is antiquated, derogatory, and frankly, offensive as f***. I would wager that any girl in high school or college softball can throw better than the majority of non athletes, so the analogy in your insult even lacks merit to begin with. You also claim to detest conformity, but here you are being upset that a message board won't conform to your antiquated notions of what is acceptable speech, over a sexist insult that is no longer in common usage. Do you not recognize the disconnect here?

  7. I don't think it's far fetched to think that, after being away from each other for 5 days, they had a meeting that was akin to "we want to be better in the second half than we were in the first half." That doesn't mean there was clubhouse issues. Holding each other accountable doesn't mean there was an issue to begin with necessarily. They possibly just want to stay focused and be better for this final stretch.

  8. Who said there was a problem? Since it was Friday sounds like a "here are the goals for the second half" type of thing.

  10. May have been the worst 3 game outfield performance by the Pirates. It was comical out there.

  11. On Yoendrys Gomez: shockingly good numbers for a Charlotte starting pitcher this year. I'm not sure that I buy he's going to give the White Sox value as a starter. Prior to coming to the Sox, I didn't see much to like on the statsheet for Gomez. But Statcast gave a clue what the Sox were looking at: some exceptional movement on his sweeper. The rest of his arsenal didn't seem like anything special but you can go a long way with a great sweeper if you use it right. He also has huge drop on his curveball but that's less of a weapon nowadays. Fastball is pretty average. He has a somewhat unique release point which is something Bannister has mentioned as appealing in some other Sox pickups. In AAA, Gomez is getting an incredible 51% whiff rate on the sweeper. Batters are hitting .040 against it. His four-seamer is performing okay too, maybe because hitters are worried about the offspeed. He's getting 40% whiff rate on his curveball too but some of the contact has been hot against it. He basically only uses the curve against lefties. He's mixing in a changeup and non-sweeper slider but they both appear to be crappy pitches. So I see a glimpse of a guy who could thrive in a bullpen role in which you can protect him from seeing too many lefty hitters and let that sweeper eat. Kind of a Steven Wilson profile although I acknowledge that doesn't sound very exciting.

  13. First of all the pitching is much better than last year, league average ERA is 4.04 and the Sox are 4.10, last year we were last with a 4.67 ERA. It’s the hitting that’s killing us, last in OPS, last in BA, second to last in homers, second to last in runs and the list goes on. I thought they were in the process of turning things around with the bats in late May and June but just about all the young prospects have regressed since then. The bats have come around this weekend but we’re playing the Pirates, the Rays are up next and let’s see what they do in TB. Venable is better than Grifol which isn’t saying a lot, he’s had some bad moments but the team hasn’t quit on him and hopefully he gets better with experience. I’m optimistic like you and think the kids will also get better with experience and we should be a .500 team in 2027. Theres also the possibility that Ishiba takes over sooner than 2029 and he goes out and signs some quality free agents which could really help things along.

  14. Screw it. Keep Robert unless he gets so hot you get something for him. Then pick up his option and tell him he's here for duration. He has pounded us in every way possible. This kind of payback would destroy him. I really hate every MF who comes to the Sox and quits.

  15. And even calling it a "problem" feeds into the game here. My guess is that veterans take a rookie when they see a slump developing and go talk to them. It's not a clubhouse problem. It's the normal course of life. Coming out of the All-Star break, a couple of vets stepped up and decided to focus the team on some feedback Venable talked about recently. There's no problem, it's not bad, and to frame it as such is silly.

  18. They legitimately had good offensive PROSPECT talent and refused to pay with anything for pitching. They could have had cease and crochet and still had a good offense but instead kept their prospects like Linus keeps his blanket. Shocking they have a pitching staff 27th or worse in every category. And half their prospects are hurt or regressed. They spent minimal and they deserve what they got

  19. Austin Slater is 41% better than league average against LHP. There will be plenty of teams looking to acquire him.

  32. Just the way rehab typically goes. The 18 months is the very conservative end and 12 months is the more accelerated end. These numbers take into account pitchers who have surgery in season so they miss one whole season just due to the timeline. Thorpe had surgery prior to the season so he should be more on the early end of the typical time as long as there are no unforseen set backs. There are always us and downs during the rehab process

  33. I am just going to say this outloud and let whatever happens here, happen. Literally no one else cares about your grudges. This is a message board. If you need to hear everyone sing in unison repeating your opinion back to you in perfect harmony, yes, you are in the wrong place. We have all been trying to ignore your rants, but anymore you can't seem to make a post without it turning into another diatribe. It stops now. Subsequent posts will be deleted, and if it needs to be more actions, it will. Discuss topics all you like, but no more attack posts.

  37. It's a bit of a boys club around here. A lot like high school. If your opinions are in line with the majority there are no free speech issues. But if you buck the system there's still free speech but be prepared to take some heat or even be ridiculed especially if your knowledge level is below average or show any particular patterns in your writing style . Of course many opinions are based on ignorance , passion and over reaction in any sports forum. But that doesn't really excuse crimes of passion. Some would call it bullying, or browbeating or wolfpack hectoring. I think there are plenty of people here who are intimidated not to go too much against the flow and some who get driven away or fed up . No one is really told to cool it especially if your voice matches the forums moderators.

  40. You're close, but I just checked BaseballReference.com and the Sox had higher attendance in 91 and 92 and then the Cubs had higher attendance in 93. The Cubs also had higher attendance in 94, but had more home games as the Sox had a (barely) higher per-game average. But remember, in '94 the Sox were coming off a 94-win AL West title season and were cruising to another division title while the Cubs were coming off a 4th place finish and were in LAST PLACE when the season abruptly ended. The fact that the numbers were even close shows that there already were problems before the strike. https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHW/attend.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHC/attend.shtml But your point is taken. This idea that the Sox were humming along and everything was just fine and nothing pre-1994 (SportsVision, Harry becoming the ultimate Cubs PR man, threat to move, botched new stadium design) had any impact on the market share dynamics in Chicago is simply not true. 1993 - only the 3rd year of the new ballpark and they had a 94-win division title season and still couldn't outdraw the 4th place Cubs. Was the 1994 the worst of the Reinsdorf PR debacles? I'd agree YES, but it definitely didn't start there....and it didn't end there either.

  44. For sure Getz says ok you want him now, you're not the only one. Give this guy or these players and he yours and you do that with every team that calls. Always ask high ,someone may capitulate unexpectedly then if no one bites you compromise. Like if you want one guy in particular you ask for 2 guys. Maybe the other GM says I'll give u one not both . Great the trade is half done , now you say ok how about pairing this A ball guy with him ? Always have others guys you'd take in lower levels in mind. You're going to hear a lot of No's before you work it out. Hopefully you're good with some quickly. Can't still be working on 6 trades 2 hrs before the deadline.

  45. There is nothing wrong with the right guys learning more positions, but #1 on the list is for them to start before the majors.

  46. His defense needs a lot of work in my opinion. Also just my opinion but the Sox need to stop trying to make seemingly all their guys into "utility" players supposedly able to play multiple positions. How about becoming competent, even very good at ONE position? Put together a solid lineup/order and stay with it.

  47. Given the number of stiffs, has-been's, injury prone guys and retreads totaling 63 players overall, you'd need a softball or maybe a basketball to fit all their names! 😆
