I don't think that it is crazy that Moncada and Giolito agree to extensions this winter. It's going to take a little more than Bregman's money IMO. Something like 6/130. He's 24 so he'll hit the market at 30 which is still young enough to get paid a lot of money. He'd probably make about the same amount of money taking that deal and hitting the FA market at 30 as he would through arbitration and hitting FA at 28.

One of my offseason hopes is Hahn agrees with Moncada on a 6 year extension, keeping him in Chicago until 2029.

Yeah 3B seems like a pretty low priority target. I know Moncada can, and has said he would, play anywhere, but that doesn't mean they SHOULD move him.

If Machado had a 109 OPS+ / 3.1 WAR year after signing a 300 million contract with the Sox, people would be calling for his head.

Realistic Offseason Plan: Resign Abreu - 2 years / $28M with $13M club option in 2022 Sox lowball Yolmer on 2 year / $7M extension and he takes it Sign Zack Wheeler - 4 years / $70M Sign Grandal - 3 years / $60M Sign Alex Wood - 1 year / $8M RF is tough. I want Nimmo. I think we shy away from Castellanos/Ozuna due to poor defense and Abreu staying around clogging up DH. Will likely be one of Calhoun, Dickerson, Gordon, or perhaps Gardner. Don't hate the Gardner idea frankly. Hopefully all on 1 year deals with an option. Let's just call it 1 year / $10M to be safe (probably conservatively high for most of those guys). For the sake of this exercise, I am going to select Dickerson. I think we'll also sign a decent veteran reliever. Hard to say who - let's go with Chris Martin at 2 years / $12M. Payroll would be right around $125M, still below league average. Lineup by May 1: Robert CF, Moncada 3B, Abreu 1B/DH, Eloy LF, Grandal DH / C, Anderson SS, Dickerson RF, McCann C, Madrigal 2B BN: Leury, Yolmer, Collins and Engel Rotation: Giolito, Wheeler, Cease, Lopez, Wood (with Kopech joining mid-June, Rodon shortly thereafter) Pen: Colome, Bummer, Fry, Martin, Cordero, Marshall, Herrera and one of Hamilton/Fulmer/Johnson/Burdi/Covey/Ruiz/Vieria, etc. Tough to not be excited about that team. Probably doesn't get you to the playoffs, but they'll be young, cheap and controllable. All good things. May be good enough to compete in the AL Central that will certainly still be down.

Gio is awesome, but I'd take Yoan Moncada ahead of every other person listed in that article.

Boston has no reason whatsoever to give a team a 72 hour negotiation/return window unless they're getting a huge return for him. They shouldn't do so.

That's what we were saying about Arenado too... And Blackmon.. It's rare that a player of their caliber actually makes it to free agency. That's why the Harper and Machado fiasco took place... It just doesn't simply happen.

It's not the ligament they described it's the labrum which is meniscal cartilage. He probably could have surgery, it just depends on the stability of the joint during testing. Odds are he would not need surgery since it's his non-throwing shoulder.

I think Bumgarner is the most likely "high profile" FA pitcher that the Sox would sign. The next tier is Keuchel and Wheeler, next tier is Alex Wood. I don't think that Cole or Strasburg are options, though I'd be willing to be surprised.

It wouldn't even be close to enough. He still made FG's "Honorable Mention" at midseason (top 60 trade value in MLB). A C+ guy and a B- like Collins and Stiever and Boston would just hang up the phone laughing and never pick up a Hahn call again.

One other random thought I had...I might have actually thought about doing a move like this one, trading for Betts, had it not been for the number of flops and breakdowns in our minor league system. If we had a bunch of breakouts - Hansen, Adolfo, and Rutherford all having good 2019s or something like that, where we seemingly had guys to trade and we had some depth - this could be an interesting gamble. Trade an outfielder and a pitcher for Betts, but leave Madrigal and Vaughn in place. Put Betts out there, say that we now have a team we think can win the wild card, at least play some competitive baseball in September even if we don't make the playoffs, and maybe we're in an even better shape to re-up with Betts due to increased revenue. But since we have so little minor league depth behind our top flight guys/first round picks, we're not in a position where we can afford to give them up. If we give up one of them for Betts, that means we have to replace the guy we gave up with another trade or free agent. We don't have anything to spare in a deal like this because things went so poorly outside our top 5 in the minors.

The original plan was to trade for Machado the year before he hit free agency and confince him to sign an extension. They made a legit offer but Baltimore (Angelos) turned it down so it's certainly not out of the relm of possibility that they would try again with Betts.

If we want a cheap, LH utility guy with power from the Brewers I think Travis Shaw makes a ton of sense provided the trade price is very cheap...which I imagine it will be. He had 2 years of arb left and was at 4.5M this year, can’t see it going up much considering he was in the minors. Also can’t see the Brewers holding onto him. Not sure what happened to him this year, but 2017 and 2018 he had 30+ hrs with an .820+ OPS. Cant speak to the level of his D, but has played 2B, 3B and 1B recently.

I would be on board with this off-season. Though I think Wheeler gets more than 4/70.

Man, people really need to stop citing the $10m/WAR figure as if that's how you analyze it. 3 WAR is not worth 27 million. I'm not sure how many times this needs to be said, but that's not what teams were paying for 1 WAR at time of signing - it's what teams pay on average for WAR based on all FA and their production throughout their contract. Teams are more than likely looking to get about 5-6 WAR out of the front end years on a 30 million/year contract. Those numbers are skewed by older contracts to guys like pujols.

So again, if next season is comparable to this season it would still have been fine if the Sox signed him? That’s a low bar to set for a $300M player imo. I guess time will tell but he’s certainly not off to a great start with that contract. He did recently buy a ridiculous mansion in Miami so he’s got that going for him at least,
