The Sox literally burned $13 million dollars in a fireplace when they acquired Alonso and Jay last year. I am surprised anyone would be upset about this signing for a young reliever who could have closer potential. If he repeats last season and gets a few saves, his trade value would be through the roof.

Puig and Mazara are similar enough that I’m glad they picked the guy who very much seems to be a good ass dude

They also can use him at closer now if need be without having to worry about ballooning salary. This could end up being a huge steal for us.

What Bummer did last year generating GBs at that rate and with that velocity has only ever been matched by zach Britton. Bummer is much more unique than many here are giving him credit for.

Sox FO met with Puig at the Winter Meetings before trading for Mazara. Says all I need to know. Glad this rumor can be put to rest.

I just laugh sometimes at Sox Nation. When they take care of their of their own: "This is so unnecessary." Then on the other side : "Why did they stop spending money and are not looking for patchwork fillers?"

So Bummer blows out his elbow in 2022 and never pitches again. Sox have lost $9.5M over two years. Not ideal, but certainly not a crippling situation. The upside far outweighed the downside. If Bummer starts closing games, he could outearn this entire contract in a single arb season. It’s a great move with very limited downside in case of disaster.

There is legitimately no reason to dislike this deal.

Basically all this does is add a $250k buyout on his already agreed upon 1/$3.25M. Honestly not really even sure why Leury would agree to this, but it’s good for the Sox. Leury is a great bench piece that can fill in for longer stretches if needed. He’ll be useful to have around again in 2021.

There are loosely three potential futures for Bummer. 1)Closes games in the future with a 2ERA. In this scenario we make MASSIVE savings over arb and in the option years. 2) takes a small step back and is a 3era player - looking at what players like this are getting now we still gain value. 3) isn’t what we paid for due to performance or injuries. Well this is the risk you take aiming for the top two. Even then he still likely has some value and it isn’t a full sunk cost as we would have paid him something the next few years anyway. Side notes: using ERA to keep it simple eye sight test:(im no scout) makes me believe if his sinker stays the same he’s going to perform trade: Not that I would, but I believe this improves his trade value. I think this this is a massive EV win. Knowing he is around for a while will probably mean I get his name on a shirt at some point.

If someone wants to complain about giving a reliever too much money, Kelvin Herrera and his 2-year, $18 million dollar contract is a much better target.

They saved if everything goes perfectly and Bummer becomes a lockdown closer on a contender. But he grabs his elbow in June, it screws up 2 arb years and probably eliminates him from ever being the closer. I think it was at least a year premature. Let’s see if he can repeat his performance. The Sox are no strangers to having elite LH relievers.Damaso Marte for a year or two was probably the best LH reliever in the AL. Then he fell apart. Matt Thornton was maybe the best 8th inning lefty in baseball. Remember when they tried to hand him the 9th? Bummer was terrific last year. But aren’t relievers supposed to be inconsistent from year to year? What makes him different? 2017 and 2018 gave no indication he was anything special. He didn’t make the 2019 team out of spring training. I didn’t see anyone calling for an Aaron Bummer extension anywhere. Overall, it’s not a lot of money. But it is unnecessarily spent money, just like the money for Alonzo and Jay, and Keppinger, and Teahan. The list goes on and on. maybe he is an exception. I hope he is as great as is apparently expected. I just have my doubts giving non stars 5 year extensions when they are under control for 5 years and have 1 more career save than me. But I do congratulate him. Being guaranteed $16 million at his age is life changing.

This isn't true. Bummer was going to get 4 arbitration years and the final one as a super 2 player. Arbitrators still overrate saves and relievers in general. They probably saved here and set up their former 19th rounder for life while giving the org cost certainty. It's fine

I was showing how $13 million, or even $16 million isn’t all that much money... but it sure can be spent a lot more wisely. Giving it to two old garbage vets is a bad idea but spending it on many years of control for a good young reliever who could become a top closer is a good idea.

I was always under the impression Abreu wasn't a Puig fan. He has said all the nice things, but even when Puig was with the Dodgers and they were in spring training in the same complex he spent zero time with him, and it isn't like these guys don't have any free time in AZ

Controlled, but not cost controlled. There is a big difference there, especially with a reliever who could potentially be in the closing mix. And let’s not ignore the two option years that could be significantly under-valued if things go as the Sox plan. I just can’t get beyond people getting upset about locking up a young, LH reliever who just put up the second highest GB rate signing a 5 / $16M deal with two team friendly options.

We’re big fans but he’s not a fit is probably as diplomatic as KW can be.

You really think 16 mil spread out over 5 years is going to dent what exactly? Even if he falls off a cliff this year and isn’t good the entire contract his $ is just a drop in the bucket for a team that if in contention should be spending and is only league avg in spending

Huh? Relievers are worth more today than theyve ever been worth.

It also adds to trade value if that ever enters the equation.

There is a good chance Bummer inherits the closer role after this year, which would make deal even better. Colome did make $23M in his arb years being a good not great closer.

The right answer is Giolito just because he was a legit TOR starter last year and bare minimum we need to finish the season with two guys we feel confidently can be the #1 & #2 of this rotation going forward. After him, we need at least one of Kopech or Cease to take a massive leap forward. As much as depth is important, we should be able to cover the back of the rotation between Lopez, Dunning, Rodon, Lambert, Stiever, Gonzalez, or even one of Cease or Kopech if they fail to progress. The top of the rotation is far more critical because Jerry isn’t going to sign a starter beyond a Wheeler type contract and we probably won’t have the ammo to trade for one.
