This isn’t an indictment on Getz at all. If this was the quality of players they were giving up, no thanks.10 points

Hey, good for the Os. I’d rather hold Cease than take this horseshit offer.6 points
-
Would you have taken this return for Cease? I wouldn’t, and I’m glad Getz didn’t either.6 points

Me and Aly have discussed privately and decided to cancel the ban bet. While I know @ron883 will be disappointed, we felt a better proposal was to ban all Orioles posters if/when a Cease trade happens and he commands a headliner better than Joey Ortiz.5 points

Why? They went with the guy who has one year left on his deal.5 points

That seems like a horrendous return for the brewers…4 points

I love Bridgeport and hope they stay, but it's not exactly like the neighborhood has rolled out the red carpet for the Sox or anything. Business development certainly has been miniscule for what you'd expect around a major stadium. The Sox don't owe them anything.4 points

If this was the most that someone was willing to give up in a starting pitching trade this offseason, then Cease getting hurt doesn’t destroy the White Sox.3 points

It’s only a blow if a deal was actually close for Cease which seemingly it never was. I’m sure Getz knew what was available, good on him for not budging. I get most of us wanted a RF and 2B to kickstart this “re-tool” and the O’s assuming they were ready to play ball and go hard after Cease made a ton of sense, the Sox aren’t a RF and 2B away from winning a division. Let Cease cook with a better game caller and better defense behind him and let the contenders (O’s included) come calling at the deadline. Good on the O’s for fleecing the Brewers.3 points

Joey Ortiz will be a stud and not Nick Madrigal 2.0. Book it.3 points

Agreed, Orioles fans should be very happy. This is a better deal for them than what Cease would have cost. These are two of the guys they wanted to dump most.3 points

Good luck digging out of that hole Getz. You overplayed your hand.3 points

What an odd sentiment. I’m as jaded about this stupid team as anyone but this is the absolute best thing the org can do for its future health and wellbeing. We can’t go back in time and fix what should have been done 35+ years ago. JR and the ISFA have had decades to turn New Comiskey into a fan destination, and all of the hand wringing about the past solves nothing. I also think it’s the a really good move for the city too. Chicago has never had a downtown baseball team and now has the perfect opportunity to create a new tourist draw while also adding a massive plot of land back into the tax base. It’s a win win IMO. Yes, the White Sox should have done things differently in the final years of Old Comiskey, and having a touch of sadness that the team is likely moving away from its home for 100 years is fair. And while I still believe 35th & Shields still could be a viable home with the proper investment around the park, the will just isn’t there to make it happen. Roosevelt & Clark is the best option for the health of this club moving forward. If it is done right, even the most fervent detractors will come around in time.3 points

Holmes is acting a little like Jason Whitlock…pure contrarian just to provoke. All the complaints and not much on the numerous possibilities.3 points

I'm never a fan of people ducking out on their ban bets. However, this comprise isn't bad. I think we should just ban them all now. @southsider2k5 bust out your ban hammer and get to work.2 points

And you guys are now going to fleece the hell out of the Yankees for Cease if they don’t get Snell or Montgomery.2 points

I think he's just having fun with you. On the other hand, I could certainly see @Quin being Machiavellian behind the scenes.2 points

For 1 year of Burnes I think it’s a fair deal. Obviously Elias was trying to pawn off the same two players and I’m glad Getz said hell no to that return with the headliner of Ortiz.2 points

A trade needs to happen in the next 19 days or I lose my ban bet with @baseball_gal_aly. If I lose that bet, burn this thread to the ground with me.2 points

Hopefully this motivates cease to pitch his ass off this season so he can get off this 50-112 team by the trade deadline2 points

Naw, Getz set an appropriate price for a guy that they weren't forced to move. Waiting to see if someone becomes desperate is fine.2 points

He traded a 2024 Sandwich pick (are they still called that?) for a likely 2025 Sandwich pick (barring injury). Or compensatory pick, or whatever.2 points

Actually love this from an Orioles perspective. Good get. Didn't hurt much at all.2 points

You could say “put the ball on the air” or “never try to put the ball on the air,” and as long as you’re speaking in generalities, you’d be wrong both ways. The reason there’s a burgeoning private industry for high-end skills development and coaching is because the actual solution to optimizing your performance is taking a customized approach to your game. Some hitters can benefit phenomenally from a narrow approach, others would be destroyed by it. It would be absolutely foolish to listen to advice from anyone who isn’t considering YOUR skill set when giving it.2 points

Oh I agree, but I always knew Bernstein was a biased & jaded asshole. I always liked Holmes, but just don’t like this take. I’m glad he cares about the broader community, but acting like a stadium in the 78 wouldn’t be transformation (if done right) is absurd.2 points

The White Sox owe nothing to the city and Bridgeport. The development of the area is up to them not the White Sox. You point out blocks of asphalt but that is a draw there, the parking. Yes it's over priced but there are plenty of options. That to me is the main drawback from the south loop site. Adding bars and restaurants in that area doesn't work as you get in your car and leave that site. Other then the big 10-15 games a year you're not getting the crowd. Wrigley works because of the neighborhood. The south loop could as well and extend and draw from UIC, PIlsen, etc. This was what the new ball park was to do. Move the city improvement seen on the northside from the mid 90s on to the south. The loop needs a renaissance and that needs to come from well thought out individuals not what is currently running the city. The Bears could easily move to Bridgeport. Plenty of land and easy to get to.2 points

I dont think Colas is finished. His projection was 50 hit/60 power he can still get there, he had a bad year and wasn't ready. He needs to get out of Grifols doghouse, put in the time in AAA to work on the things Getz etc told him to work on and hopefully in a couple months we will see what he can do. I still want Montes in a SEA trade regardless of the risk. He destroyed Low A as an 18 year old (994 OPS) 3 years younger than his level. Bring me the young left handed savage with extreme power. Dude could get to the majors before the end of 2025.2 points

The new stadium would be right around the corner from Manny's, a Binny's and a Portillo's, roughly a 10-15 minute walk. These are all big wins.2 points

Holmes wasn't making much sense. First he acts like, "its only 2 El stops away, what's the big deal?" and then acts like moving 2 El stops north is abandoning the south side. This is just on the other side of Chinatown. He also said he was uncomfortable how fast this was moving. How does he know how fast it has moved? For all we know, they have been discussing this forever.2 points

I am all aboard a move to the south loop. I mean, I would LOVE to go to a game, and then feel safe (sorry) walking around the stadium at night, going to bars, and making a full event out of the day.2 points

That's truly shocking. Even the Pirates are willing to invest more into their future/s than the White Sox at this point. Granted, everyone knew this "recoup last year's lost profits year" was coming down the pike. And the White Sox rebuild potentially got lengthened out even more with the news that Robert will now be getting traded earlier than expected with Boras lurking at the end of the rainbow.1 point

I don’t think it makes a ton of sense for the cubs to go after Cease because I’m not entirely sure the cubs will be good during the duration of his contract. At this point I think it’s pretty dead in the water unless the cubs are willing to move Horton or the sox are interested in taking a quantity type of deal. if the Cubs take PCA and Horton off the table I think there could be a suitable package made up of a few of the other guys towards the top. Something with a combination of Wicks, Brown, Triantos, Morel, Mervis, Assad could be interesting. Morel has a cannon but he may be a decent fit at second based on his inconsistency with accuracy. Mervis would be largely blocked at first by Vaughn but if they feel they can get him consistent DH at bats they’re a big power upside. Assad could be interesting for the Sox. He was very solid last year and might find himself the odd man out on the roster if they were to trade for Cease. I could also see Wesneski as a trade fit. Personally I think he will make a nasty reliever for the cubs next year and I would keep him but there is some upside in giving him another run as a starter. As a Cubs fan I would not like a move like this, but I can’t deny the fit is there for both teams.1 point

I’m a cubs fan but i wholeheartedly agree. The cubs attract a lot more casual fans and the discourse is generally not good most of the time. The cubs have some interesting decisions ahead of them. Belli makes a ton of sense but has big bust potential and the Cubs also have a possibly CF of the future in PCA that could be up this year. If Belli is pushed to 1B I’m not sure his dollar amount will be justified even if he continues hitting. I think the Cubs should bring in Hoskins to play first and allow Mervis to DH a bit. I like the idea of bringing in Turner to play third for a year while they see what Morel can do there. The cubs have a pretty solid 3B prospect in BJ Murray Jr that could force his way up by summer. In general I think it makes some sense to keep some powder dry on the long term deals while this “wave” of PCA, Horton, Wicks, Morel, Murray, and Mervis get big league run. They already let Velazquez go for nothing because he was blocked. At some point you need to see what you have. In the meantime, shore up the bullpen1 point
