Flexen was signed to be the 5th starter on a bad team. Ends with a 4.95 ERA. Have to say that he did his job.

Well all the nice vibes celebrating the great organisational win and great accomplishment of the Barons players and staff comes to a screeching halt pretty damn fast because people love to drag the negative drama into anything positive going on.

It's super disappointing to hear that people didn't support Liam upon his return. That goes beyond baseball.

He was cheap and ate innings. And under control for 2 years. I don’t think it’s a failed signing at all. Much better signing than Clevinger, who never really ate innings in his career.

The fact that the Sox did this for Flexen will get around the other MLB clubhouses. That can pay dividends down the line.

“Antics”???? He’s a young star in the most dysfunctional organization in professional sports. It’s a minor miracle that his agent hasn’t demanded he’s been shut down for the season like 8 weeks ago. If they were mildly competent they would’ve absolutely demanded a deadline trade. It’s borderline malfeasance for an agent to even allow for a young player to continue employment with this dumpster fire organization.

That's so cool. You love to see it. He got a MAJOR standing ovation today. As he should, he's been a workhorse this year. I appreciate what he's done throughout a horrific season, and it was cool to see him go 6.1 scoreless. I was hoping to see Crochet for the last home game, but Flexen was actually nasty. Made a couple guys look foolish. I want to look at the replay though because I feel like the umpire was calling everything inside to RHB a strike, everything outside to a LHB a strike. I thought it might've been my vantage point, but then I started to see batters get disgusted by that specific call. Great way to end it for him. I was surprised they brought him out for the 7th, despite a strong performance. so it's neat to see this post and get a better understanding of why they might've done it. I think it's a cool thing to do, it ain't my money, but he also looked good enough to go out there for the 7th. more than anything, I was surprised when they pulled him after kind of a flub hit, but I was also pretty focused on the fight going on in my section. More on that in a moment. I went to this game expecting it to be a madhouse of bitter, unemployed people, but the atmosphere was genuinely the nicest Sox game I've been to in years. Everyone was in a good mood. I think beer was cheaper than normal, yet the drunks were limited (besides me, but I just talk to myself). I sat behind the third base dugout for ten bucks. Some kid and his mom kept trying to get the wave going the entire game. It picked up some steam toward the end, but I don't think you could call it a legitimate wave. It spanned one, maybe one and a half sections. Naturally, it's not a Sox game if someone isn't getting into a fight or getting shot (my past four ballgame experiences). Today, Bridgeport Bob got into it with Beverly Billy. Which was amusing. "You can't say that about my brother!!!" or something. They looked exactly the same. Well, everyone involved on all sides looked the same. The entire crew of guys getting into it looked like they could be related or even clones. All ginger beards. All fat. All wearing St Paddys Day Sox jerseys. Unique looking dudes. Actually, one of the opposing belligerent's beards was turning grey. Maybe he was their uncle. What was particularly amusing to me was that fans were cheering for them being kicked out during the Flexen 7th inning mound visit, then it turned into an ovation for Flexen after being pulled. Fun day to play hooky and I'm glad I went to at least one Sox game this year. I actually haven't seen them win in person since, truly, I think 2005.

One thing I didn’t appreciate as much until this round of articles. When a guy like Ohtani or Soto or Wheeler hits the market, they are hitting the market because their teams could absolutely afford them back, but they’re likely to get more money than the team has to spend. These are the QO guys, a team would be happy bring them back if the contracts work out. But when a guy like Grandal, Lynn, Keuchel, Graveman, Clevinger becomes available, that’s a guy almost any team could re-sign if they wanted. The Dodgers could absolutely have kept Grandal, the Astros could have kept Graveman, the Padres could have kept Clevinger, the Rangers didn’t have to trade Lynn (maybe he’s the worst example here but this will stick). In other words, if you have payroll limit, you are getting guys teams could easily afford and don’t want. One reason why a team might not want a guy back is they think they’re about to fall off a cliff. I figured this out a while ago, it’s why so many White Sox FA signing faceplant, the White Sox are selectively getting guys who teams think are about to fall apart because that gets Reinsdorf his discount. But it turns out there’s another reason a team might let someone go - they’re just assholes. If your team is willing to sign free agents but only the cheapest ones, you get a double toxic combination - guys who are likely to fall apart and guys that teams want gone because they’re assholes.

I think the larger point here that you like to gloss over is that this site did not want to count on any of those players because of their history of not being able to be counted on. so yes, your theory of “they would be better if all of these players were healthy and played up the their best abilities” makes sense in the vacuum of space outside of the reality of their careers

I have to think that Lip has a much more thought out opinion about rebuilds that isn’t so binary. Mostly because Lip actually reads everything provided to him and responds as such. Have to think that lip would actually understand that rebuilds aren’t all the same and the organizations actions within a rebuild are important to the end of the rebuild. You know, context

This is wrong on a lot of levels. - I have a closer relationship with my dad because of sports. It’s something we can always talk about with each other. I have many friends who aren’t as close with their fathers as I am, because they don’t seem to have a lot to talk about. I also have really good memories with him around 2005 and the Hawks Stanley Cup run. - I’ve been in a fantasy football league with 11 guys I went to high school with. I probably wouldn’t be in contact with probably 8 of those guys at this point in my life, but the fantasy league keeps us in touch and the main reason we’ve kept it going all these years. - I’ve won a good deal of money from said fantasy league, because I stay up on the NFL, so there literally is an ROI associated with that - Sports are communal. When the Hawks went through their from 2010-2015, the city was buzzing, especially during the playoffs. It was awesome going to the bars to watch those games with a packed house and everyone invested. It also brings us together. The country is incredibly divided politically where everyone thinks the other side is the “enemy.” But when you’re the fan of the same team, that stuff goes away and you’re on the same side/team. - The actual payoff to your team winning can’t be matched by much. The Blackhawks went through a huge sexual assault scandal and it turned me off of the team for a while. But the memories I have of celebrating those cup wins didn’t change. Same with the 2005 White Sox. It became clear over time that team had a horseshoe up its collective ass given their lack of success in future seasons, but that doesn’t change the way I celebrated with friends and family in 2005. I could keep going, but yeah…you’re wrong

Players stuck around and threw out t shirts to the fans. Vargas stayed extra long throwing out shirts and signing autographs after all the other position players left. Pretty cool. New Yoan. I hope he figures out how to play baseball.

They should have been playing him every day no matter what. And honestly, probably should open with him at 2B next year.

If we can extend the season by 6 months, we may be a playoff team. It's a shame we are peaking after 155 games.

I know I’m in the minority but I’ve hated listening to him since long before he came to the Sox and nothing I’ve heard since he came to the Sox changed my mind. His nasally voice combined with his pompous attitude always made me hit the mute button.

Just announced that Stone will be back for multiple years. Schriffen needs some work but I think eventually he will be OK. I like his enthusiasm.

I know times have changed, but its kind of funny that Sox fans, some of whom are still bitching and whining that the Sox moved from free over the air to pay tv 40+ years ago are now bitching and moaning that they are going to be available over the air free again.

Congrats on finding one person to agree with you. Rebuilding/reloading is part of baseball. I'm not sure there is a single MLB franchise that hasn't gone through it at least once. Honestly, what is the other option for the team right now? They have no choice but to rebuild everything from the ground up because there is nothing left. Tanking is something different and not even what they were trying to do. Even teams that try to lose on purpose aren't this bad.

Probably a bunch of things Being tied to a specific location that you call home and/or have pride for. I'll die a Sox fan even though I moved from IL to NC. Nostalgia/memories growing up. Going to games with your dad as a kid, getting autographs, playing backyard ball with friends and imitating your favorite players, etc. You can pick a new team but you don't have a lifelong history invested with them.

If you simulated a 162 game season of just the Sox vs. the Angels, would baseball as we know it simply cease to exist. One of these two is the worst team I have every seen and it is both of them.
