Joe Doyle posted his Over-Slot White Sox Draft Preview. Believe you can only listen to the podcast if you are a Patreon subscriber. Will post some highlights from the nearly hour long listen. The 2025 draft dirt.4 points

WSI was my main source for White Sox info back in the day, I was a read only guest and remember, LIp, George Bova, and Daver. I believe George Bova started the site, Daver was a plumber by trade, and Lip was a sports reporter and play by play man. The Admins we have here have to be respected for the time, effort, and policing they put into this site.4 points

Nobody with a grip on reality should complain about the eventual return for him. The complaints should be about not unloading him when they decided to nuke the roster like they should have. I think we all know the return is going to be very disappointing as it should be given his play and contract.3 points

I still occasionally post on WSI. Probably out of habit more than anything since there really is only 15-20 active posters there these days. I joined that site in 2004 when a new coworker found out I was a Sox fan. Even back then though the mods were ban happy and there was always a weird invisible line that you better not cross or you'd be banned. And depending on who the mod was you never knew what might happen.3 points

You left out that Daver was a "bad ass" catcher for Providence HS in 1972.3 points

I don’t think Hall will be much of a discount at 10. Carlson and Parker definitely won’t be. If it’s a prep guy, I’m guessing it’s minimum $6 million at 10. I think they spend $3 million at 44 and between $1.5-$2 million at 76. I think they’ll try to push Fauske or Gamble to 44.2 points
-
That’s the question. He’s 17 so it’s a much better gamble than all these 50 hit college guys imo Sox will be very prep heavy. I’d guess way over slot at 44 and 76. There will be “punting”.2 points

It'd be one thing if Robert swung at balls, but he swings at balls and then swings through strikes that should be crushed. He is such a fucking bum.2 points

They should skip Smith's next start.2 points

So in other words, there are no indicators they are building around a coherent strategy. Awesome.2 points

Usually when an end of roster guy starts getting more playing time they are released shortly after. So here is hoping.2 points

That's their MO. Even if they have speed they have dumb base runners.2 points

To be fair, with the way he’s played the last year+, it’s not likely even look like a good return off the bat. I think most here just want to move on regardless of return at this point (take best offer and move on.2 points

So on your list, you left off Houser. I forgot; is Houser 5 for 5, or 5 for 6 in quality starts since the Sox signed him with that ERA of 2.27? Some one implied earlier that Houser is now of no more value than he was when the Sox signed him. That's ridiculous. He is much more of a commodity than he was when he signed with Sox. Also let's discuss some people on your list. Amaya was exactly what the Sox signed him to be: a strong glove and weak bat who would just hold a place until Colson came up. What the Sox didn't expect is that Meidroth was the one who took over at short for Amaya, not Colson. But again, Amaya was a good signing doing what the Sox expected from him. Over and over again Stater and Tauchman have been great signings for the Sox this year. (Wait I don't see Tauchman on your list of signings. Hmm, it must just be an oversight on your part. Not your manipulating stuff to make your point?) Tauchman, pre-2nd injury was going to get the Sox a great flip, and Slater has done a great job. It could be argued without Slater, the Sox might very well have been swept by Toronto. In 1st win, he scored two runs and knocked in 2 runs. Yesterday, that walk was key, very key. Taylor has also been exactly what the Sox signed him to do. Again, it's ironic that he's actually better than the guy he was signed to backup, so really, he's probably exceeded what the Sox signed him to be. Wait why isn't Shane Smith on this list as an example of the Sox pro scouting. Again, I assume it's just an oversight on your part. Also, what about Mike Vasil? That was a very good (great?) signing. Why isn't he on list? What about Matt Thaiss? He was an excellent signing!! Held a spot in the lineup until until both Teel and Quero were ready to come up, and then the Sox flipped him for a quality prospect. What a great signing. Again, not on your list. Now, of course there are some duds, as you listed above, but if you look at ALL of the signings, you have to be impressed with the Sox pro-scouting/ signings this year. Hopefully your next bit will not have the oversights and omissions when you try to make a point.2 points

Thanks for posting the Joe Doyle recap. I like his draft approach. particularly underslot in round 1. If they can't get Carlson or Parker, the others don't seem that distinguishable from a player the could get at 20. And the value may be at college pitcher. Would also prevent the dreaded (to me) mult-round punting.2 points

This type of thing is definitely a cool thing to do as an announcer, showing fans different experiences from the cities they live in. This is one thing I will give Schriffen total credit for because that is a very scary thrill thing to do2 points

Yes things are difficult here but still surprising the degree of their drop. Not talking about being stars to just then being normie ball players. But Robert isn't hitting .700-.720 ops. We are talking almost a year and a half of an OPS+ in the 70s. Like, Leury garcia at age 27, just like robert, was 20% better offensively. And he sucked! Eloy Jimenez went from a 140 wRC+ at 25 to out of the league at 28. Vaughn was just an underwhelming 1B who suddenly was hitting worse than if you cut Leury Garcia's age 27 offensive season in half. Out of the league in AAA. Moncada ... well he seems like he's generally the same just injured. A more normal person who just prioritizes looking hot in music videos over baseball strength. Anderson I think is the MOST explainable. Him and Schoop were near carbon copies of one another offensively. Both were putting great offensive numbers up, and both fell off a cliff at age 30. Their approach just wasn't built to last. White sox players being underwhelming is built in for me. I'm used to a Brent Morel coming up and actually being ass. But this crop of dudes actually showing up as top players only to regress to out of the league just as quick is WILD.2 points
-
I don't think it's that hard to figure out. Moncada and Robert got HUGE signing bonuses and were extended early. Eloy and TA were extended early. All four of them also dealt with severe injuries. The clubhouse culture sucked after Renteria. The Sox stunk at drafting and developing hitters. Basically every free agent signing didn't work out except Liam. When you take all of this into account (injuries, a lot of money before proving much of anything, bad clubhouse culture, few veteran examples of how to do things right on their roster, and little to no help from players outside the core group), it's not surprising they all washed out.2 points

Back when I was a wee lad of 21 or so back in 2005 there was this place and WSI. WSI rejected almost all sabermetrics and seemed rather stuffy in general. This place was more accepting of new stats and philosophies so I joined up here. Not sure I ever posted on WSI, lurking was enough. Crazy that I have accounts in various places for bulls, sox and UM football for going on 20 years now. Literally went from a kid to a middle aged person on them.2 points

JR and EE certainly made bad PR moves almost right off the bat - the first being insulting and alienating Bill Veeck. Bill Veeck certainly had his faults, but this got them off on the wrong foot with the Sox fan base and with Chicagoans in general not long after the ink dried on their team purchase. Not long after that was the whole SportsVision debacle and letting Harry Caray get away to the Cubs. And again, Harry certainly had his faults, but there was no denying that he was a fan favorite on the South Side and that he quickly became a Cubs legend after he left. And then a whole string of PR disasters that we all know too well and don't need repeating. At least they did quickly breathe new life into the team by bringing in Fisk, Luzinski, Bannister and almost winning the pennant in 1983 after being a laughingstock team in Veeck's final couple of years. Then it was quickly downhill for the rest of the 80s bottoming out with the near-move to St. Pete in 1988.2 points

My quality has been fine, but it drives me nuts how I'm never signed in, and how hard it is to just find the sign-in. There is no link on the freaking purchase page for those who already have an account! so annoying.2 points

Perez, Houser, Shane Smith, Vasil, Civale those are all pretty good finds. They have all done well for pieces others teams were willing to discard. Perez a FA but was pitching well before he got hurt. Even so they probably got more bang for their bucks than any 5 pitchers new to their team this year for as little money as they're getting. That's like jackpot territory for garbage picking.2 points

Going from Renteria, for whom it seemed like players would run through a wall, to drunken baseball corpse who napped in the dugout probably throws a monkey wrench in the whole accountability and professionalism part.2 points

There is supposed to be an infusion of cash in the offseason, and Peggy K reported a few weeks ago she heard it WAS related to baseball ops...but that doesn't mean it has to be for free agents specifically. But while I believe the jury is still very much out on Getz...my hope would be a "real" owner treats this as "Tell me what you need to turn this around, we're going to spend what is needed so you have what you need to be successful." I haven't looked at the FA market this offseason, and don't even know if there are players that make sense for long-term investments from the Sox given how far away they are...but maybe we do start to see some slight changes in the offseason.1 point

I'll add MarySwiss to one of the great posters there in addition to those already mentioned. She was always kind, friendly, and had interesting things to say. Sadly, I saw that Fenway posted on a Facebook site a couple of years ago that she has passed away. I have no idea why Fenway was permanently banned. He was always courteous and insightful. He was a huge BoSox fan and talked about them often, so maybe that's why the mods hated him so much and ultimately banned him. Kind of par for the course for that site, unfortunately. Doublem23 sure was opinionated. I have no idea what happened to him. He was perhaps the most prolific poster there and then suddenly one day......poof - his posts came to a sudden stop and no one ever mentioned him again. Voodoo, Dumpjerry, and Nellie Fox are good guys and good mods. There were some other good mods, too. They weren't the problem. I'd say FarWest and Daver were a big part of the problem. West never failed to remind everyone that he was smarter than everyone else and Daver never failed to remind everyone that he was tougher than everyone else. And yes, I realize West was the one who keep the board running until his untimely death. I thought Brian26 was a total d-bag and was part of the problem after he became a mod. I cut back on my participation there after he became a mod and continued being a total condescending smartass to people. What a jerk.1 point

I watched almost every game when it was free, it's been the high seas ever since. It has to be a net loss of viewers since they ended ota. Just because the fools who were too rotten to get an antenna, were loudest, doesn't mean they were numerous.1 point

From my standpoint the ota antenna was better than the app. I took the $19.99 per month White Sox only selection this past Sunday. I have a Samsung tv which is compatible to the chsn app. I just had to go to search on my Samsung tv and the app came up. You finish up on the chsn app. I live approximately 7 miles from Chicago. I get a good picture on the tv but the app is buffering every few minutes especially when cutting to or from commercials. The only way around it is to go back and forth between the full screen and the small screen. Sometimes when it buffers it freezes and I have to exit the app and then return to the app. The chsn help line is useless. Sometimes when I tried to get help their phone line doesn’t even ring. Exasperating!!!!1 point
