So the big negative on the scouting reports of Luis Robert was that he was easy to fool with off speed stuff and he had a poor approach at the plate. I barely saw him in the minors, but through 6 games his pitch recognition has been top notch, and he has crushed off speed stuff. He hss been mature beyond his years at the plate so far. He hasn't swung at much pitchers pitches, and he doesn't try too much at the plate. Robert has been lightyears past my expectations.

I mean, you're not wrong. The tough part about that is that by the time he would typically be heating up, the season is going to be over. That's...not ideal.

This trip to KC is critical. We're currently the equivalent of 2.7-10.8 (let's call it 3-11). I'm much less worried about where we are as I am about how we got here. The only distraction from the crappy pitching has been the clown show that fills out the lineup card.

We've lost about 10% of our playoff probability, but still in the 7th position and have an adjusted expected record of 30-30 instead of 31-29. So "should" have gone 2-3 and we're 1-4, a one game swing in the standings. We're still without Mazara, Eloy Jimenez, and Lopez. Madrigal isn't up. No Kopech. Encarnacion can go on massive hot streaks that carry a team for 7-10 days, and he can also look like he's a week or two from walking away from the game. Most encouraging, James McCann looks really good again, and, worst-case scenario, he has tremendous trade value if he can keep this up. We're having to rely on the likes of formerly released (June) Delmonico as a clean-up hitter, and giving significant playing time to the likes of Adam Engel and Leury Garcia, who are prototypical role or bench players, not starters. The primary concern, of course, is the starting pitching. It's not like there is going to be a lot of trades made here in the first 2-3 weeks unless franchises are experiencing significant financial shortfalls already. If we simply think of Rodon as a #5/swingman (future reliever), and Keuchel as a 2/3, that puts all the pressure in the world on Giolito and Cease. We'll find out soon enough if they're mentally strong enough. Let's just hope that if we do start to fall out of this, they begin to give more opportunities to guys like Lambert and Dunning instead of Gio Gonzalez and Ross Detwiler. We're in a very similar situation to what the Braves are facing right now with their rotation. I'm going to hope that if we don't make the playoffs, we get some clarity on the roles of Rick Renteria and Don Cooper moving forward. We don't have to have the BEST manager in the game, but it would be nice if just for once we prioritized this position and really thought carefully about who was the right fit to take this franchise to the next level. Also, with the news about Mikolas also being out for the season, we can't afford to sustain another season-ending injury in the pitching staff. That much is obvious, and probably not preventable at this point, either.

Long game approach doesn’t work well in a 60 game season either. Obviously I’m not suggesting he should pull a Parkman and overreact to everything, but you definitely have to be willing adjust a bit more in real-time.

Ozzie rotated Mark Kotsay and Andruw Jones instead of wanting Jim Thome. Him questioning lineups is laughable after that circus.

Ozzie was clowning on Ricky's lineup featuring Delmonico hitting 4th in the second game of the double header. He questioned why Robert is batting so low. Says that "protecting" a rookie is meaningless and stupid. Also, see below. Could Ozzie be gunning for Ricky's job? He sure as hell would be better.

If I were the White Sox - I would keep McCann (if I could). Pay him fair and have two catchers and use it as a position of strength. Hindsight is 20/20 and I'm basing this on a small sample size, but McCann looks like the real deal. Whatever change he made last year seems to be sticking this year (at the plate) and defensively, the dude is top notch in his ability to call a game, etc.

I think the conclusion from this thread is neither Ozzie nor Ricky are fit to manage this team.

Lots of negativity here is warranted, but let's remember it's only 5 games into the season. A win here could turn things around quickly. Let's get a strong win and go on a winning streak. All the sudden we will be back into the thick of things! It's a new day. On the other hand, a loss here would be pretty damaging.

Ozzie influencing the team to not bring back Thome should keep him from ever managing the Sox again. He was right about last night's puke-worthy lineup, but pretty much anyone with an ounce of baseball knowledge would see how bad it was.

Positives are that everyone is beginning to realize renteria is a terrible manager and should be gone. Other than that, the young kids can hit.

Yes, which is why I'd take a lot of the offensive numbers with a grain of salt. 2-3 inches off and about 2 inches under for both sides. Can't hit in that environment.

How many times from 2013 through 2020 have we seen a stat box/highlight like that from an opposing pitcher? Too many times to count. Having the worst DH numbers in modern baseball history didn't help much last year, either.

It's like going to war with General Hooker or Burnside as opposed to Lee/Grant/Sherman. Giolito essentially a two-pitch pitcher, the change and fastball. A bit reminiscent of Jose Contreras with the FB and forkball combo back in 2005 and early 2006.

Yes, but those conversions don’t mean much because we could easily win three games in a row that would get us those “8 games” back. It’s all relative. I’m not a big fan of the whole “every game actually counts for 2.7 games” thought process.
