Madrigal, Stroman, Simmons (vs. Harrison) and Suzuki four players that will be closely followed and compared by Sox fans.

The Cubs still feel like a 75 win team at best, but they're at least getting to the point of being more interesting.  Clearly another full rebuild not in the cards, with Cubs' fans increasingly impatient.

I love the Blue Jays aren’t content with what they have and continue to make bold moves, whereas there are Sox fans who say we should be happy with the core we have.  The Jays are going to pass us soon if we don’t make a major move.

They might sign Schwarber too.

I was just about to post that I would rather have had the scrubs' offseason than what RH/KW did.

Seriously:

Suzuki vs ???

Stroman vs Velasquez

Simmons vs Harrison

Also, picking up $16MM of Kimbrel, and adding $41MM more in RP contracts.

Who's rebuilding, and who's "competing?"

To the point if Suzuki himself, I'm disappointed that this FO apparently didn't even fucking try to look into him. I dont care that he's a RHH, he would probably be the most promising RFer here since Dye.

Bold prediction, but I think Manaea or Montas is on the White Sox by the end of the day.  With Chapman being moved, that now allows the A’s to focus on trading these guys.

Only way the sox can acquire anything is by giving up more of the very limited player assets they do have lol.

Honestly don't care to follow and compare any of those guys.

Something I realized yesterday when looking at the tax numbers.

Remember Rick Hahn’s shenanigans with Hendriks’s contract, where rather than just signing him for 4/$54, he can convert the final year into an option that becomes deferred money?

The luxury tax calculation is guaranteed dollars divided by guaranteed years, at least on Hendriks. Because it’s 3 years guaranteed and $54 million guaranteed, his luxury tax number for this year is $18 million.

If they had just signed him for 4/$54 without the shenanigans, his luxury tax number would be $13.5 million.

Thats the difference right now between having a Spotrac estimate of $17.25 million in tax space and $21.75 million in tax space. No one thought that would matter at the time, and all of a sudden it does.

well I would prefer not to buy sox tickets against the blue jays. It will be 9 nothing after the first few innings. So many A league teams better than the sox, JR knows one thing in his favor, he is in the worst division in the A league. NL central is right there with them, this is why these midwest teams can win with less all you need is a few of them like the sox , cardinals , brewers, tigers  and cubs to spend just a little more to win the division and limp into the playoffs. There they will get killed.

The record of the AL Central in the playoffs since the Cubs/Indians World Series in 2016 is hideously ugly.

It’s amazing how much the failures of our minor league system are costing us right now.  From 2015 to 2018 we had five first round picks.  Two of them were eventually DFAed, one of them is a backup catcher who can’t catch and only has one option left, and another was a guy who contributing but was traded for 1 to 2 years of a reliever making ~$16M.  At this point, our only hope of extracting future value is from a 3B/1B type coming off two Achilles injuries and who turns 26 next month.  That’s all we have to show from our 1st round picks from four drafts.  And non of these guys were high variance HS picks, but rather safe college picks.

Let’s go another level though.  The Sox had six total 2nd & 3rd round picks across these drafts.  Out of these six players, only one remains in the organization in Gavin Sheets.  Of the five others, one was traded for two months of Caesar Hernández, one was traded for one year of Nomar Mazara, one was traded for one year of Yondor Alonso, and the other two retired or were claimed off waiver.  Again, all six of these college picks, most of them of the safe variety.

I could go a level further and point out all the relievers we drafted in the middle rounds, all the relievers we acquired by selling international bonus slots, and the fact that we invested $2.5M in Yogurt Sanchez instead of signing teenagers who are a currency rebuilding teams actually want.  Good thing we have all those relief prospects and near ready utility man in Yogurt so we can prioritize other needs in free agency…whoops.

I know bigger points made, but Collins has an option left?

I totally agree, but desperate times call for desperate measures.  Need to focus on 2022 to 2024 and not head into this year with major holes.

Sad but true...would also add that the three high school guys in Kanny all imploding last year killed their trade value.

Rick Hahn is purely living on the laurels of the Abreu/Robert signing and the trades he made at the beginning of the rebuild. Outside of the Lynn trade, Hendriks signing, the organization had not done anything worth a damn to improve the team into a championship contender, and build an pipeline that could extend their window.

But hey, at least we’re not the Reds, right?

That definitely hurts, but I think that can partially be blamed on the pandemic.  At least they went for youth / ceiling with those picks.  2021 is going to be huge for those guys and for the system in general though.
