Wow, what a write-up: ”• On Tuesday night, I caught the White Sox’s High-A affiliate, Winston-Salem, at Baltimore’s affiliate in Aberdeen. Winston-Salem featured shortstop Colson Montgomery, Chicago’s first-round pick in 2021 out of an Indiana high school, who has been outstanding at the plate at two levels so far this year as a 20-year-old. He’s had two hits in four of his seven games so far in High A. I did not get to one of those games, although he did have one hit, so this isn’t a Luis Robertsituation, but he played the hell out of shortstop, with a quick first step and a plus arm, making two good plays coming in on softly hit balls. His swing is good, if sometimes long, and he did show he could pull his hands in to shorten up and stay inside the ball. The big question about Montgomery in high school was whether he could hit better pitching, since he hadn’t done so as an amateur, but so far the results are very, very promising.” https://theathletic.com/3398959/2022/07/04/phillies-nationals-orioles-white-sox-prospects/?source=user_shared_article7 points

You framing it in those terms caused me to do a little bit of digging... of course we all know Montgomery has had an incredible season so far, but he's 18th in all of the minors in wRC+. Your guy Neslony is actually 21st, lol, but I digress... I think for best start amongst hitters from the '21 draft class it'd be between Lawlar or Montgomery. Lawlar's overall batting line is a bit better, but he had an extra weeks worth of games to beat up on complex league pitching (he also destroyed Low A and was promoted to High A today) whereas Colson's extra week of games so far has been in High-A. But the fact he's even in the conversation for best start from his draft class, one of the best hitters overall in the minors, etc is just so damn impressive. The guy seems to be a hitting machine.6 points

Fuck that guy. He chose to come back. He’s made a gigantic fucking mess of everything and could walk away at any moment. He does not have to be here, but he’s here, every single day, fucking up over and over and over. Fuck TLR.3 points

Rip the bandaid off. This team is going nowhere fast. They are who they’ve been since ASB 2021.3 points

lol you can see how Tony only cares about his guys. The zone Cueto got was criminal, but Kelly was throwing shit all over the place not even near the zone and La Russa got pissed at him not getting calls on pitches that were half a foot outside.3 points

This team has a bad mix of players and attitudes. Too many guys not hustling, paying attention or seem to care day to day!3 points

This team is far more deserving of several White Flag trades than the 1997 team.3 points

If Kelly manages to escape the inning without giving up a run, I'll let Richie do anal3 points

Honestly we deserve to lose for that triple play.3 points

Katz has been here 2 years and in 1 of those seasons they had arguably the best pitching staff in baseball. Two of the pitches (Cease + Rodon) went from looking like lost causes to CY contenders. He previously did the same work with Lucas before getting hired here. No pitching coach is going to turn every pitch on their staff into an ace/relief monster. Katz is as good as the Sox are realistically going to do. It's nice they have at least 1 modern coach with some influence in their organization.3 points

That’s not on the coaches. Engel and Yoan messed up, end of story3 points

I'll criticize Tony for anything, but using your best reliever against the other teams best hitters rather than managing to get them a save is smart.3 points

that's the most White Sox play imaginable3 points

if Highland Park were 10 miles away instead of 30 miles away from GRF, I would agree with you.3 points

If the White Sox think they are the best team in the AL Central, now is the time to show it.3 points

If I understand this correctly, the Sox are about to go on a roll and there is a good chance Richie got pegged last night. Story seems to check out. Thread approved. ?3 points

I kinda wish Leury was up so he'd bunt here.2 points

For a game like this is when we needed to go after signing some left handed power hitters like Joc Pederson and Kyle Schwerber. Those two guys together almost have as many homers as the whole Sox team.2 points

Yep, warning track power the opposite way. Get used to it2 points

Vaughn's power has been disappointing imo.2 points

Two different zones tonight. Not even funny2 points

FWIW, I don't think those balls Arraez hit are routine plays with Robert playing as shallow as he was. But a good CF like Robert should have had both of those had he actually seen the ball off the bat.2 points
-
It’s going to come out that the training staff told Robert not to run in the outfield and that his contract states he doesn’t have to put in an effort on back to back games until 20252 points

That's different than any other night?2 points

Sickening...lose that stupid stance for starters2 points

Because he doesn’t get his legs into his swing now. It’s all upper body.2 points

1 for 2 and a walk, and a RBI. Has anyone in Colson's draft class gotten off to this good of a start, in their pro career? He is really impressive. That has to be the longest on base streak in professional baseball, this season.2 points

Darn. Mena done despite a low number of pitches. Looked great. 5.0 IP 2 H 0 R 0 BB 5 SO. 62 pitches. 45 for strikes. 10 swinging strikes on the evening.2 points

I would cross this road when we get there. Grandal does not seem close to coming back. When he does, he won’t be able to catch every day. 3 catchers is not a bad idea. Maybe they will get rid of one of their many rh hitting corner outfielders.2 points

Him and Harrison have been playing good baseball for over a week now. Time to find another punching bag .2 points

I don't care if it was 50 miles away. The respectful thing to do would be to cancel the game today.2 points

Engel and Hendriks return. Was hoping Eloy joined them. The wait continues.2 points

They should consider canceling the game after that Highland Park shooting with suspect still at large.2 points

The order of operations for Montgomery should be simple: Keep him at SS as long as he looks be solid average there If at some point Anderson agrees to an extension, maybe consider moving him to 3rd (dependent on proximity to the majors) Don’t move him to the OF unless both SS & 3B are blocked for multiple years, Montgomery is more or less major league ready, and there is a massive hole in the Sox’s OF Given Colsen probably needs another two years in the minors at minimum, there is zero reason to consider moving him to the OF.2 points

Sounds like the start of the 2022 version of Hostel or Taken…too deliberately provocative.2 points
-
He's a really good fit for what the Bulls need. Dump Tony Bradley for him. I saw they might be able to use the TPE to get him.2 points
-
Hopefully Eloy can come back and hit some home runs for the White Sox. The team needs his power. They're not hitting any home runs.2 points

Those stats are incorrect. For starters he was on the IL from 18th-28th June and since he got back he has 4 hits from 18 AB which is .222 and his stats for the last 15 games have him batting .245. And those figures are inflated by his 5 hits in the blow out game against Detroit when at least 2 were against position players. I really do hope Yoan figures it out soon but he is not looking that good since coming back from injury but that is hardly surprising as he has had no real consistency because of persistent injuries this season.2 points
-
The schedule should keep them within 2.5-4.5 games back the rest of the way without much doing. Winning wont excite me, but run differential will. That’s the rope for me.2 points
