I would love to hear about that sometime. Maybe we need a thread where everyone talks about their jobs and how they got into their field. We probably derailed this thread but I enjoyed learning about education from your perspective.?2 points

You don't know that though. Their investigation is still ongoing. They could still hand him a 162 game suspension tonight. Now I don't think that will happen and they should have already made a judgement, but they have not taken a position yet. To anyone who has used critical thinking in this situation, there is not a lot of evidence that Clevinger was looking at a big suspension. In DV cases that the MLB has deemed serious, they have acted quickly to put players on administrative leave. In DV cases that were significant enough to involved law enforcement, there has been swift judgements made with the clarity from the law enforcement involvement. In Clevinger's case, he was put under investigation and subsequently finished his season without interruption. He has already played half a season under this investigation and it took a month or so after the investigation to become public for people to seem to understand that. There really isn't a comparable case with MLB handling an investigation like Clevinger's. At some point, they have to realize, this happened in the "summer" and it is a "he said, she said" situation that you would think has no further evidence coming forward. I am guessing the hold up is the MLB is hoping some more information comes out against Clevinger so they can punish him and be held in the high graces of social media. If they don't have enough/sufficient evidence to punish Clevinger, they are concerned with the backlash they will get for not punishing him. It's really a microcosm of the nasty world that is social media. The people watching this case on social media are not concerned with right or wrong or the facts of the matter, they just want scalps. They want to call Clevinger or the Sox or the MLB names to show how moral and great they are as people by putting down others. For the folks who aren't concerned with proving their moral greatness to a few hundred followers on Twitter, the following of this is just being a Sox/baseball fan. And for those folks, it's just about the facts of the matter. And the facts bode well Clevinger whether he's a POS or not. And I tend to think he probably is a POS. I just don't think the facts of the matter that are out there at this point give credence to the idea that this investigation will lead to a lengthy suspension if any.2 points

Yeah, they honestly don't even need announcers. Anything Spring Training will do.2 points

Gotta love the Sox' main TV dude reporting on a game you can only see via his own hand held camera. JFC what a poverty franchise. Throw a fucking camera up behind home plate and just do a free stream.2 points

Sox announcing that Colson is playing tomorrow but also not allowing us to watch it has some big "free frogurt, but the frogurt is also haunted" energy.2 points

Well, if you want an extremely low-stakes trade, we did sign Hanser Alberto after he played in depth for dodgers last year. sucks for Lux, he seems absolutely devastated.2 points

He may have forgotten half of what the average fan will ever know but hey, that’s a valid argument for some reason!2 points

Abreu wasn't exactly considered a good 1B until late in his career. Maybe we should give Vaughn a chance to actually play his natural position as the starter before making uninformed statements and pigeonholing him into DHing longterm?2 points
-
We need to maximize the amount of PA that Sheets gets against RHP, and Vaughn and Burger get against LHP. If Grifol can figure that out, it will go a long way towards squeezing out a couple extra wins and getting that 88-92 that we'll likely need to take the division.2 points

The fact of the matter is by this point, they should have one.2 points

Neither Leury or Romy are true OF, so I don't agree. That is basically having 2 real OF on the entire MLB roster (Robert / Benintendi). Who is going to play RF late in the game when you have to play Sheets or Eloy out there? Leury has proven to be an awful RF, and we have no idea how Romy will look out there. If Colas isn't going to be on the roster to start, you need a real 4th OF. Could be Marisnick. Could be Billy. Could be someone else who has a great spring - think eventually that spot will be Cespedes if he earns it, but that might not occur until 24. Also, Burger's role would be so limited. I guess you could DH him again LHP and stick Eloy in RF, but is that really worth a roster spot? Our bench would be awfully defensively.2 points

Would it be possible to pin this thread? I realize I can probably just take a screenshot but it's nice to be able to see it on this site.2 points

I don’t understand how Machado wants to stay there without Jon Jay or Alonso?2 points

Many teachers I work with were excellent students. They loved school and were model citizens. I was the "smart kid who could get straight A's if he just applied himself". I applied myself to four varsity letters, four trips to the state chess finals, editor of the school newspaper, and various other clubs. Plus a sparkling 2.4gpa and 32 composite in the ACT. I rarely completed any homework but could earn As on most tests and quizzes. I also disrupted classes with ad libs. Anecdotally I believe I learned as much or more than my classmates with better grades. My 3.8 college gpa and ACT would be artifacts I'd present as evidence lol. In sales you can do everything right and not get the order. Changing someone's behavior (the buyer) isn't easy and it's almost always out of your control. But I was responsible for a budget and needed to hit it. So about those former model students who became teachers that I mentioned earlier. They get frustrated by kids who aren't like them. The chatty ones, the too busy to do homework ones. The kids who don't have a sense of "responsibility"*. Me? These are my people. I was a sweathog**. So what I bring to the classroom is a desire to help the students that were like me in high school plus loving challenging the students that were like me in college. It seems to be a winning combination. * I sat listening to a colleague complain about the total lack of responsibility one student was showing in her class. This was a Frank Thomas playing tee ball moment. What she didn't know until I told her was the kid at 17 has been working a job for almost a year to pay for his apartment which his 13 year old brother just moved into with him. Her little math worksheet probably wasn't the best way to judge responsibility. I found out about his situation by asking "why are you so tired?" Instead of "wake up! Or I'm sending you to the office" seems easy to me. **1970s TV sitcom reference kids.1 point

So when the Rangers come back and say "No, and Patrick Kane has made it public his only desire is to play for us." What do the Hawks do? Keep him while they are actively trying to have the worst record in the league, and let him walk for nothing in the offseason?1 point

I was confused, too. I googled the quote, and it’s about Moncada. Here’s the article: https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/white-sox/white-sox-pedro-grifol-says-yoan-moncada-here-do-something-special1 point

Four months off can't throw but not worried. Sounds like a great plan. Players need to be monitored better than this.1 point

Romy is a career .241/.261/.350 hitter, including an abysmal .196/.221/.261 line against RHP. Leury isn't a great player, but even his awful 2022 is better than that. Could Romy be better than Leury this year? Absolutely. But are you confident that it will happen? I'm not. What happens if they get rid of Leury, and Romy is still striking out 36% of the time with a miniscule walk rate, and can't hit RHP? There's really not much downside to keeping Leury around until you're more confident that Romy can adequately replace him. It's a low bar, but it's a bar Romy has yet to reach.1 point

On the CHGO pod, Vaughn said Pedro called everyone. But we know he didn't talk to Leury this off-season.1 point

I think people will be surprised what it looks like when you've got a more mobile 1B. Jose did great with the balls he could get to, problem is by the time he got good with his footwork and hands his legs were pretty much gone. Vaughn already has the footwork to play a passable 3B, he'll be solid at 1B regardless of how tall he is, there's much more to it than just range on bad throws to the bag.1 point

https://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/story/2023-02-27/dodgers-gavin-lux-right-knee-inury-spring-training-andrew-friedman Looks like Trayce Thompson making Dodgers as weak side platoon CFer. Opportunity to trade a spare 2B as a Gavin Lux replacement.. EDIT: No way they trade TA7 to the Dodgers, but maybe Andrus "Miguel Vargas (JAN ADP 264 → FEB ADP 225) Vargas fits the profile of another type of player that typically climbs up the draft board as we get closer to March – talented young prospect whose outlook for playing time has been solidified. Early in the draft season, there was thought that the Dodgers would land a big name free agent shortstop to replace Trea Turner. When that didn't happen and the team committed to playing Gavin Lux at shortstop, it opened up the second base job for Vargas. The 23-year-old struggled in his 50 plate appearance sample during the 2022 season – but slashed a terrific .304/.404/.511 with 17 homers, 100 runs scored, 82 RBI and 16 stolen bases in 113 games at Triple-A. He'll hit at the bottom of the lineup, but with the Dodgers lineup being loaded once again it shouldn't ding his counting stats too much." Yahoo fantasy sports1 point

Officially in Texas teachers are in complete control of their grade book and no one can override them. But, admin controls what classes you teach and when. Here's the math that I see and what I tell my students. If you don't turn in one assignment you have a 0. If you make 100s on the next three assignments, you are still failing. Three missing assignments and nine 100s is failing. Turn something in, no matter how craptastic, and you'll have a much better chance to pass. For most of my career I've taught seniors. They have passed English since kindergarten and passed two comprehensive state wide exams. Who am I to stand between them and their diploma and say you haven't passed my standards? So I usually have 99% passing rates. I'll also pull up a chair and sit next to them until they finish the assignments. A key difference is I accept and embrace that it's my job to get kids to pass. It's likely from a first career in sales.1 point

Yoan's a career 96 wRC+ guy batting right-handed. The swing isn't aesthetically pleasing, but it's not the point where you give it up completely.1 point

How long until Yoan pulls a Jose Valentin and gives up switch hitting? I've never seen Yoan try to hit left on left though, so there's a chance it could be worse.1 point

I’m good putting him 5th when he’s batting left-handed but yeah move him down if he’s hitting righty.1 point

I appreciate hearing this from you, particularly about how you reach your students and what your district is doing to involve kids. The cricket idea would be a good one for the refugee kids since they would have a sense of belonging and meet other like minded kids. My wife has said she has kids come from countries like Poland and she’s not sure how the school helps these kids. Some kids know other languages and can translate for the other kids, but it’s not that kid’s responsibility to teach the other student. She does what she can for all of her students but with resource limitations it sounds like she can’t do it all for her kids. One other question for you - how is grading handled in your district when it comes to zeros? When I went to school kids had zeros for partial credit for turning something in, but now I guess they are giving 50% and can’t give zeros for missing assignments. That to me takes away from accountability.1 point

I mean if he can get him to be pre 22 Leury, he has a use on the roster. Who knows if that is possible or not, but it is nice to hear he isn't being given the job, even if he probably is.1 point
